I'm in the process of obtaining a CDL because a seasonal gig I do often requires the transportation of placardable hazardous materials (not in my Accord, thankfully). I've already done the written test and gotten the permit. Only thing left is practice and road test (and other stuff like background check to get hazmat endorsement).

I have to do it in a truck that's over 18000 GVWR for a class C license or over 26000 for a class B (company is taking care of that). I'm not doing class A for now because I don't plan on driving a tractor-trailer.

Anyone here ever got a CDL? How hard is the road test? Anything I should look out for that the inspector asks?

I know most people go to a trucking school, but I don't think I need to, since the only reason I need a CDL is to transport hazmat, and I don't plan on becoming a full time trucker.

My prince had a class B for years....it was for busses. If you're able to handle the truck well, you should be fine.... try to go to a town that's not planted on a major freeway..... do the nearby roads by car & get a feel for them....

My sister's ex did it & he couldn't hardly drive a truck & camper....so it can't be THAT hard! :D He used to make her drive when they went camping!

Thanks, that at least puts my mind at ease. I've got no problems with trucks, that's for sure, only problem is that I get LOST! It's not entirely my fault though, around here, 20th street can turn into 20th avenue, then 20th road, then 20th drive... it just gets so confusing.

I should be doing the road test sometime next month in long island.

I have a CDL. I dont know other states but Texas requires that you parallel park the vehicle that you are driving. Other than that Dont hit any curbs and you will pass...

(In texas if you hit a curb you automatically fail the driving test)....

(just for the record I drove school busses for about a year)
Like princess said just have a very good feel of the vehicle that you are driving and you will do great. The test was easy.... :) you should do fine....
