View Full Version : Are the Honda OEM Exhaust Tips (for 7th Gen) SS or Chrome?

Hi everyone! 1st-time Honda owner here!

I've been searching for some exhaust tips for my V6 Accord sedan and there appears to be some confusion on just what the Honda OEM tips are made from. Some websites say stainless steel while others same chrome. I'd prefer stainless, and the pricing sure makes them seem like they'd be stainless. That said, it appears that the ones for the '02 Accord V6 are stainless. Does anyone know if those will fit the 7th Gen Accords? Also, how long are these tips?

Finally, in looking at aftermarket tips, it appears that they are all too long for my car - upwards of 8". Does anyone know of shorter aftermarket ones (say 3") available anywhere?

Thanks in advance!

I have the OEM tips and they are chrome plated.
Perhaps chrome on SS.
No rust so far.

Welcome Rogue Two!!

I believe he's right....chrome plated.... Mine were on the '02 first, so they were bought Oct. 01 & no rust or marks on them!

I cannot remember where I saw the post but someone had picked up some Chrome Plated ones at O'Reilly Autoparts that fit. I bought the OEM ones for my sedan. They are ok, but I would think twice about spending $65 on them again. Not crazy about the set screw hanging down and being very visable from the profile.

I believe the aftermarket pair was around $25.

Thanks everyone! I can see $65 for stainless steel ones, but that seems steep for chrome plated. My concern with the chrome plated ones is that living in the Northeast (I added my locale) we see a good amount of sand and salt on the roads in the winter so rust is my concern.

Also, does anyone know the length of the OEM tips? It seems to me that 4" would be about as long as I'd want since there's only 2" on teh factory pipe after the bend. So far I've only found 6"+ long tips.

Try these:

I bought these from this guy and love them. I lived in the Cleveland, Ohio area? Snow/salt/sand? Yea, we had that :D

These are JUST like OEM, but they are bigger around. Nothing stupid, just slightly bigger than what Honda sells for tips. They fit great and look even better. After 10k, not one bit of rust.

I brought 2 pairs from him for my 2000 honda accord v6, and 1999 v6 accord, and after 2 years in NYC it still looks good. So you can be confident buying from him. Now that you bring it up I think I'm staking of my stock ones and swapping it out with those from the 2000, the rust on the stock ones are annoying me

Thanks Shumax and bagbklyn! I saw these on eBay a week or so ago and was considering them. That said, do you guys have the sedan or coupe? I'm just curious how they look on the sedan since the stock pipes are angled rather than straight. Also, if teh sedan, is there enough clearance between the larger tip and the bumper cover? I know that the clearance is limited. Do either of you have any pics you could post? Thanks again!

I have the sedan and they don't touch the bumper cover and don't stick out too far. Honestly, they look like what Honda should have done all along.

I don't have any pics, but the car is 50ft. from me and my camera is 5ft. I'll take some pics soon and post them.

As promised...

I noticed the passengers rear tip is sticking out just a hair more than the drivers side. They slide on and off somewhat easily once you loosen the set screw. I'll do that when I get REALLY bored ;) The car has been through one Cleveland, Ohio winter----read; salt, sand, etc.

Oh yea, don't worry about the plates. I don't live in Ohio anymore and I ripped them off today. The car hasn't been out of the garage for 60-days. We're in an apartment waiting to close on our new home in 2 weeks!!! Can't wait!!!!!!

Notice the lack of rock chips after 10,000 miles? There is 21 coats of Zaino on the car. I took it back down to nothing before winter and then applied 8 coats since then. So, there were 13 on it before I started over. That stuff is incredible!

Shumax - Thank you very much for the pics! The tips look great  and are exactly what I'm looking for! Time to go get some.

Now, any info on that hood deflector? I see "Perfect Fit" on it, so I assume that's the brand or model. Actually, maybe we can continue this discussion in the "Bug Deflector" thread in the 7th Gen forum.

Thanks again!

Allright! I picked up some 100% stainless steel, triple chrome plated oval exhaust tips on Saturday and installed them on Sunday! They look great and I am very pleased. Now for the surprise - they look exactly like the ones that Shumax and bagbklyn bought from the guy on eBay. That said, I paid $8.48 apiece at my local Advance Auto for a total of $18 after tax! The dimensions and description listed in the eBay auction are identical to what's on the packaging and his pics look the same.

The parent company is American Auto Accessories but according to the package, the tips are made in China . Anyway, their website is www.3ARacing.com and here (http://www.3aracing.com/showroom/index.php?cPath=21_33) is a link to their exhaust tips. I bought part # 62-1106 under "Clamp-On".

Now, I was intending to post some pics here as well so you could see how they look exactly like Shumax's but I emailed the pics to work last night and the email never arrived. :dunno: I will post the pics as soon as I can...

The package may say they have the same specs; however, I can tell you that they don't look the same. Not in a bad way, they just don't look like the same tips.

If you're happy with them, that's all that matters

$8.48 apiece at my local Advance Auto . . . part # 62-1106 . . .

Thanks for the specifics! I went right out to the closest Advance Auto and found only 1 tip, but got the 2nd tip today near work. These exhaust tips and a simple chrome license bracket really give a finished, but subtle and understated, look that I wanted for the Accord's rear.

The tips are a good fit and perfect length. I slid the clamp on as far as possible so the tips are maybe an inch longer than the stock pipe and sit nicely just below the contour of the bumper. Tightening, then loosening, helped get the clamp farther onto the pipe before final tightening.

Advance should be selling a ton of these things to Accord owners.

n1 - glad I could help! Got pics?

Here's another tip. The screws on the clamps and the tip itself are not SS and will start to rust. I replaced all mine with SS M5x0.8 at 13mm (1/2") long from the Home Depot. They were $0.37 for a 2-pack or $1.48 total for both tips.

Local muffler shop here will install ( welded on ) SS tips for 20 bucks each.

PepBoy stocks the same exhaust tip as AdvanceAuto. The price difference is inexplicable:

PepBoy $13.99
Advance $8.48

Again, kudos to R2 for the tip ( :D pun intended) on Advance Auto and the good follow up tip (sorry) on SS screws.

I tried the Auto Advance exhaust tips twice for my Civic Wagon. I went thru two sets of them. The first set (dual exhaust tips) was put on in November and thoroughly rusted out by March. I put a second set on in March and they were gone by the fall. I bit the bullet aned paid $25 a piece for the Honda OEM and kicked myself for not jsut ndoing this to begin with. They've already out lasted the last two sets with still not a spot of rust on them, but they're designed much better. They fit and center perfectly with the spacers that are built in. One thing I did change were the set screws like one person mentioned...I picked up a set of stainless steelies and slathered everything in anti-sieze ;)

The OEM tips I got for my Prelude 3 years ago are still in perfect shape, too.

Remember that some SS will rust such as 301SS. You have to have 304 or maybe 303 SS before it won't rust.

Went looking for the SS bolts, but the folks at Home Depot here couldn't find them. They suggested a specialty house which I'll follow up on because the bolts have started to rust already.

You MAY find some at a marine store.... I think most "rust proof" would be zinc, wouldn't they? I believe that's what we have to use for the pool stuff....

Thanks for the thought. While zinc is available, I believe that it is a coating and may not be entirely rust proof. Zinc may not even be available on fine thread machine bolts??? Regardless a marine store is a good idea b/c they have a lot of stainless hardware as well as zinc. Thanks!

Interesting. After one year--car's b-day is Tuesday :), mine have no rust at all.

You're right.... I was wrong about zinc... it's used for some things as a sacrifice metal.... but a marine store still may have SS for you!

n1 - The Home Depot I went to had them in the "specialty hardware" sections. They had a few drawers marked "Stainless Steel" and the screws were in those drawers, 2 per bag. If I remember correctly, the drawers for the SS screws/nuts/etc. were blue. I had no luck at Lowe's and was going to try Sears Hardware if I struck out at HD. Good luck!

I'm looking at getting a set of aftermarket tips for my black V6 sedan, but I haven't been able to track down those 3A Racing that Rouge Two mentioned here in Canada. However I was able to find some tips by Tuned Performance (http://www.tunedproducts.com) at Canadian Tire. They had two stainless steel bolt on tips for $16.99CDN which were both very similar except one was round and the other was oval (part #7000 and #7001) here (http://www.tunedproducts.com/Tuned/roundbolton.html)

I was having trouble picturing them on my car and wanted to get some opinions on weather round or oval exhaust tips look better. I'm leaning towards the oval tips.

Ignore my last post. I found out Canadian Tire can special order the 3 A Racing tips that were mentioned earlier in the thread. They come out to $10.15 plus tax. They are usually shipped within 3 or 4 business days. They can also be ordered online from www.driverfx.ca (and I would bet www.driverfx.com for those in the USA).

Funny. The tips used to be standard on 5th gen accords and older. Both of my Accords have them the 89' and the 96'! Can you say 'Cost Cutting'

I think they figured out that a pea shooter tip just looked kinda chintzy. Personally I'd rather just forsake the tips if it only came out on one side. I considered doing a dual exhaust conversion just for the tips but that was dumb.

Rogue Two,
I owe you one. My tips were starting to rust (I live in New England) and they were the cause of a funny humming noise when I drove up a hill which happened intermittantly. I went to Advanced Auto and got the tips you recommended. I think they are going to rust also but for the money I can replace them periodically. Attached is a pic of my old tips. My new ones look just like yours.

Thanks.

Does anyone take their tips off in the winter? With all the salt in Toronto, the car is always dirty and doesn't look that good anyway. I also have steel wheels with my winter tires, so the car really doesn't look as good. I'm thinking of keeping the tips off during the winter (although after the car is a few more years old, I'll probably keep them off).

I like the new '06 Beveled design on the tips. On my '05, one tip stuck out a hair more than the other. They were both seated perfect, the exhaust cans were different on both sides.

BTW, the new wheels on the '06 are a bitch to wax compared to the '05.

They do look nice----like the older 2002 TL. Too bad they (Honda) still can't get them to stick out flush with the bumper. That part looks silly to me---almost makes the exhaust finishers (tips) look like an after thought.

Nice car though...

Ok finally the dealer can order the stock tips that came with the 06 and they only cost $25, the only problem is that do they fit. The parts guy was really nice and said he could order them and if they don't fit I don't have to pay anything. Now since they're being nice, I don't want to take advantage and figured I'd put some effort into finding out if they would fit.

It looks like they're both the same diameter but the slants are different, looks like the 06 has no slant. Can anyone help with the specs or if someone has already done this? Thanks Guys

I will, I hope they fit.

Btw Jeremy I found the V6 tips you liked (with the inner lip) their number is 08F53-SDP-100A, they look good and with some adustment they might fit, unfortunately they sell 2 since they're for V6's only. best price I found was $65 originally $89.

The one for the I4 is 08F53-SDN-100A but it's huge and looks like it's for the underspoiler kit/Aero kit.

Well the 06 tips don't fit, too long, too narrow :boohoo:

The dealership made some calls and apparently there are no OEM chrome tips for the LX-SE except for the ones for those who have the read underspoiler or Aero kit. Sorry Jermy4, let me know if you have any luck. I'm giving up for a bit.

I gave up awhile ago. For some strange reason the exhaust tip on my car is huge. I bought a tip at my local auto parts store that is supposed to fit exhausts up to 2.5" but it is too small for my car. Ideally something with a 3" inlet would work nice but most of them that I have found locally with that large of an inlet have a huge outlet and would look ridiculous. Someone once mentioned going to a muffler shop and having one welded on for a pretty reasonable price. Maybe I'll look into doing that???

Peniole
01-11-2006, 09:17 AM
Yup your right out exhausts are 3" in diameter and the slant doesn't help either. I wonder why they chose to expand the tip like that, it doesn't come out that big from the muffler :dunno:

Thanks to Rogue Two I made a trip to advance auto parts and got the tip stainless oval 3 1/4 inches part number 621106 . They are now $9.44 plus tax but I wasn`t going to pay for the oem ones . The only thing is I only bought one as the oem tip had fell off one side I might need to purchase another one as it is indeed bigger .
