View Full Version : Euro Accord, US bound?
lei1634 01-07-2009, 03:47 AM Caught this article over at Jalopnik.com. Hopefully we can get some paddle shifters over here.
In an effort to cut development costs, Autocar says it looks like the US could finally get the same Honda Accord as the rest of the world. Currently, a separate model is developed for the North American market while the Euro model is sold as the Acura TSX. This policy has always confused us, subtracting many tens of millions of dollars from Honda’s bottom line. We don’t know when this would happen or even if it will.

spikeitaudi 01-07-2009, 03:56 AM That would be interesting as if the Acura TSX is the rest of the worlds Honda Accord what would Honda do with Acura TSX in NA.
PMCErnie 01-07-2009, 04:16 AM Though the two could become "one" in the future, you can bet that the Accord will need to be competitive with, and comparative to, the Camry. You can't do that with only a skimpy 12 cu ft trunk and a tight passenger compartment like the current TSX .
TSX - 12 cu ft
Accord - 14
Camry - 15
One thing's for sure: the merged Accord/TSX will be circa the size of a Camry. :selavie:
Osiris_x11 01-07-2009, 04:37 AM Not all that bad of an idea, to intro' a mid-level sedan between the USDM Accord sedan & the USDM Civic sedan... as opposed to replacing the current USDM Accord sedan!
This can allow Honda to continue up-sizing & add more desired content/features to the current USDM Accord platform to keep up w/ the Jones'es (ie. Camry, Altima, Mazda6, Sonata, Malibu, Taurus, even Maxima, etc'), while still offering an adequately-sized & attractively priced family-sedan that's relatively more premium than a Civic sedan; no diss' on the Civic platform, but it's very spartan, value-oriented, and entry-level in terms of comfort, refinement, fit/feel/finish (other than the exterior styling which is rather impressive for it's price-point).
If an Euro-Accord (meaning a more economical USDM Honda-version of the Acura TSX that is smaller/lighter than the USDM Accord sedan) was available when I acquired my '08 Accord sedan, I would've given it very strong consideration, as I really didn't need nor require the somewhat large(r) size of the 8th gen' Accord sedan at this point in my life as I already have an SUV for Home Depot / Lowes / Costco / Sam's Club runs & the back-seat is hardly ever used in day-to-day life (only for occasional family-usage, evening/night out w/ friends, or such), etc'.
Kinda/sorta reminds moi' of Goldie Locks & the 3 Bears; for me: one car is slightly too big (USDM Accord), one car is relatively too small (USDM Civic sedan), and one is seemingly sized just right (Euro-Accord ~ Acura TSX). . .
(admittedly though, the Acura TSX, both the 1st & 2nd gen', have somewhat cramped rear-seats & avg' at-bests headroom... IMHO!)
denniswolf 01-07-2009, 04:40 AM Im a bit confused... what model are they talking about is developed just for the US ?
"Currently, a separate model is developed for the North American market while the Euro model is sold as the Acura TSX".
Acura is a US thing, but they arent talking about that because of the line above. So if they mean the Honda Accord, thats sold in heaps of countries outside the US.

Acura is a US thing, but they arent talking about that because of the line above. So if they mean the Honda Accord, thats sold in heaps of countries outside the US.I presume they mean the USDM Honda Accord sedan is essentially the JDM Honda Inspire (also sold in a handful of other markets as a Honda Accord), whereas the Euro-Accord is sold as a Honda Accord in majority of the International markets & as an Acura TSX in North America (to the best of my knowledge). . .
PMCErnie 01-07-2009, 07:48 AM Interestingly, in Australia they sell the US style Accord, as well as a Euro Accord (the Acura TSX). So, they have the two models competing with each other under the Honda name.

elp_jc 01-07-2009, 08:00 AM I honestly don't see the Accord (and its competitors) growing any more. In fact, it should be downsized to Gen7 proportions, which is not far from the current TSX indeed, just like Osiris mentioned.
If Honda and all other manufacturers are not waking up and smelling the high gas prices already, they'll be caught by surprise again when they go back up to record levels as soon as next year... and stay there :lmao:. Furthermore, the V6 size needs to shrink to 3.0L as well IMO; it's the perfect size for a 6, and the perfect compromise between performance and fuel economy for that size car. My guess is Camry and all other competitors would follow suit, but the question is who's going to dare go first.
And finally, hopefully hard times will put fat Americans on a diet so they don't demand ever bigger land yatchs :naughty:. Good day gang.
AznX TL 01-07-2009, 08:27 AM i dont think thats the accord they are talking about, our accord sedans are Honda Inspires.
and TSX's are selling like hot cakes so that wouldnt make sense. im thinking that they might be cutting the coupe.........

Ahh thats the only one that fits the bill if were going by the wording of the article.

Does that mean we might have a classic on our hands??? :lmao:
Seriously, I think it's what was already mentioned, and what most other manufacturers do. Use the same platform for both (different sheetmetal, of course), whether the larger current Accord or the smaller Euro one. I don't see the coupe going away at all; it's a good seller, and also uses the same platform. Good day.
AznX TL 01-07-2009, 08:57 AM im confused, because the accord sedan is offered all over the world, and the euro accord is/was the "special" edition Euro-R accord, not euro as in Europe.
and they said a US specific model which is the coupe, and its not selling nearly as much as the sedan or TSX, or even civic coupes.

Exactly. I don't want some crappy Honda TSX. A fully loaded TSX was very viable for me but I still went with the accord. HAven't looked back. I will however say the accord's handling is abysmal. In fact I am going to start a thread addressing that right now..
