View Full Version : Why so mean?
09 ACCORD COUPE 01-18-2009, 07:54 PM I haven't been on DA for a few days but I noticed coming back, some of you are really being jerks. Not to mention any names but some poor soul was just asking about his Avatar and some of you just berated him. Another had a question about not being able to get his car in park after hurting his hand trying to do so and some of you just made really unecessary sarcastic remarks. What's going on? I came here from another forum because I found none of this going on, unlike the forum I left. Let's respect each others' opinions and treat one another with respect. I love DA because most of you are smart, civil and genuinely nice people. Please let's not trash our wonderful forum with insensitive remarks and just plain meaness. Thank You.
samsonskeg 01-18-2009, 07:58 PM Its all stevencrosbie's fault.
nighthawkcoupe 01-18-2009, 08:07 PM Hate to reply to this with yet another sarcastic post... but why is this in honda talk?

Just didn't know where else to put it. I glanced quickly for off topic but didn't see it. It's about the forum so I guess that's Honda talk.:dunno:
listen to remix 01-18-2009, 08:23 PM It should be in the pit...
I've been noticing the hostility as well. I'm surprised nobody is bashing you for making this thread.
samsonskeg 01-18-2009, 08:25 PM I think its probably that time of the year, everyone is stuck in the house/cabin fever

In the pit, ok Thanks. They can bash if they like, I'm going to bed. Goodnight.
Because sarcasm is the way of this website. If you want questions asked in a thread you post you have to write"no sarcasm plz"or else loads of it will be on the way.LOL

For some, sarcasm is a way of life. Dry is good for a bourbon and a smart answer.

mwmcginn 01-19-2009, 04:16 PM Don't sweat it, there are some crazies here. But diversity is a key to success. Internet forums arent always known for being nice, but a lot of good information can come out of it.

v-6 nolo 01-20-2009, 05:41 AM This forum is MUCH more forgiving and "nice" than almost any other car related forum i have been on.
Dark Shark 01-20-2009, 05:49 AM I think part of it is the fact that some people feel like they need to post every single problem they have on here and reveal too much of their business. People post things without trying to research or solve the issues themselves first. It aggravates some of the members because if the person making the post would just slow down and think about what they are saying, they would realize that it's silly or unecessary.

Thats an extreme example as above and the guy did deserve it, but there does seem to be a bit of hostility as of late, The fact that people can get so worked up over someone posting a question on an internet forum always amuses me. Its not like you own or have to mod the forum. Just click 'back'.
v-6 nolo 01-21-2009, 08:55 AM It is a give and take, tons of people on here are nice and helpful, much more so than any other forum I mess with. TBut as Dark Shark stated, it does get old when someone starts a new thread for every little question...and don't take the time to research or do any leg work themselves.

Very true... it's not that hard to find answers to these questions on google
BenjiBoy650 01-21-2009, 10:18 AM I think this forum is very nice. I don't know what would happen if you went to other Honda forums and posted a picture of your bone-stock 4cyl Accord 5AT sedan...I certainly would not expect a bunch of kudos from their members like we do on this forum :dunno: What say you?
A little hostility goes a long way. HID threads and rattle threads don't bother me, but reading that your car drives fine with no ECU fuse and "can I get some tips on how to wetsand? You use 2000 grit followed by 1000 grit right?" immediately followed by "oh be quiet folks I know what I'm doing!"...we need more people like RTF around these parts to lay down the law. Still wish he would have accepted the moderator position when we nominated him

100%. I go on rx8club.com and they can be BRUTAL. Not about stock cars, they love to get new members, but if said member makes one mistake, it is all over...even moderators will attack. The WRX forums seem to be similar to DA in regards to helping out, but there threads are all about turbos, BOV, stage 1,2,9, ect..
stevencrosbie 01-21-2009, 10:42 AM Very true... it's not that hard to find answers to these questions on google
I agree. I like to see members (new and old) search on their own first and maybe post in old threads. Searcing on their own shows me they took ownership with their question and are willing to do the work necessary to find a good answer.
Sometimes the answer is hard to find or isn't available. I have no problem assisting those who want some help or even helping searching. Some of us have been around long enought that we know exactly where to find some of those legacy threads that could help someone.
I dislike the replies that say "search is your friend" when all you had to do was help them out a little. Give 'em a link and point them in the right direction.
There is a big difference between being "mean" and enforcing the rules here. The rules will be enforced and those will comply. Simple as that. If you think following the rules is mean, that is a personal problem.
There are people here who are nothing short of amazing people and I enjoy conversing with them.
Look at the two Obama threads. Yeah there are a few people who show just how dumb they really are, but most of the posts in those threads are good, clean, and well thought out opinions (it doesn't matter if I agree or not). The fact that we (DA) can have threads about politics and not have to ban every third member and close the threads says alot about the group of people here.
The fact that people feel safe to voice their opinion without being called nasty names shows that many in this forum would agree.
Short answer. I like it here. The people are good. The conversations are good. The content is good.
elp_jc 01-21-2009, 02:49 PM Maybe I'm asking too much of people, but what's the problem with just ignoring a thread (or a person) you're not interested in? :dunno:
If nobody responds, OP will be forced to search, no? And if somebody feels like helping a new guy, why not? You can always mention to search in the future after helping; VERY different approach. I just don't understand folks who waste their time attacking others rather than helping (sometimes the attack is longer than the help seeked :thumbsdow), when they can simply skip the thread. That mentality doesn't get you far in life IMO, but to each his own. Later gang.
zexen 01-21-2009, 03:21 PM it's not that it's a difficult thing to answer the thread or skip over it, but when people log on to see that 12 new threads were started about issues covered multiple times before, or threads about 10 things in 10 separate threads. I came from forums like ClubRSX ClubLexus, and AcuraZine which are all great forums such as this one. this is still to me a growing forum, but a great one.
I admit I've been irritated with it before and have said something about it. I guess I'm used to forums that have to purge threads once a year to stay running smoothly, but are mostly forums that require 25 posts to start a new thread so we don't have this issue often at all. I've moderated other forums as well, but have found that minimum post requirement is the best way to keep large forums from being overloaded with repeat topics.
everyone is new to the car. everyone is learning. but soon enough I feel this could be the largest accord specific forum beyond v6p and its large 6th gen following.
v-6 nolo 01-22-2009, 07:08 AM Is there a reason that there is not a post limit before you can start a thread?
07AccordEx-L 01-22-2009, 07:24 AM People repost threads that have been covered. No offense to some of you but how many effin' Intake threads is there?

BenjiBoy650 01-22-2009, 08:26 AM Is there a reason that there is not a post limit before you can start a thread?
Never thought about this before but it's a good concept. I would wonder about forum software limitations and I've also seen some good questions/ideas/threads from people with 1 or 2 posts.
v-6 nolo 01-22-2009, 08:53 AM Not saying it is needed, just curious. A lot of other forums have that format.

Every board I've ever been on that is car related has millions of these "what kind of gas mileage do you get" threads.
Or...I don't get it...you mean I don't divide my miles driven by tank capacity. :D
Tundra forums have many more mileage threads than here. Most can't believe the 5.7L gets better mileage than the 4.7 :D Free horespower and torque :D

I'd merge it, but I need to get in my iPhone to do that. I am eating lunch now, but the firewall doesn't let me do anything with the mod panel.
If you want, report the top post and another mod should be able to take care of it. I can't have my phone at work.
