A coworker recently bought a 2001 with ~100,000 miles. He's over a quart low after putting 4K miles on it. He sees no smoke or leaks. If you've had this have you had any luck with thicker weight or high mileage oil?

View Full Version : Any other 2.3L oil burners out there? cajun 01-21-2009, 05:54 AM A coworker recently bought a 2001 with ~100,000 miles. He's over a quart low after putting 4K miles on it. But what my lil brother and dad have been doing is they change the oil every 5k with mobil so it only thats like 4.5 to fill up to the full line. The rest they put in the trunk in a one quart bottle and then once they hit2,500 miles between oil changes they add that .5 quart and its almost back up to where it should be. No leaks no nothing so I think they will keep on running but still havent done a Timing belt on either and the 2000 ex 4cyl is past 200k and the 98 v6 is at 195k...keeping my fingers crossed til April and easy driving hopefully. If he currently runs a 5w20 I'd move to a 30wt esp if 50% or more of his miles are hwy. I remember when I was doing alot of hwy miles and was a quart low. I topped off with some Valvoline Max-life syn-blend(instead of the full-syn they offer) and consumption went away. The oil I had in there was either the dealer bulk oil(mobil 5w20) or MC 5w20. More importantly hows consumption on Cajun's 02? cajun 01-21-2009, 07:56 AM More importantly hows consumption on Cajun's 02? No noticeable drop (running MCraft synth blend) between 5K oil changes, but mine is only a pup at 66K miles. Fredsvt 01-21-2009, 04:30 PM 4000 miles is good for a 2.3 with over 100k. Pretty much any one of them using a quart at a rate of 1000 or less, especially on the highway needs the pistons re-ringed. The oil control rings contract and carbon up. So each instead of scraping the excess oil off the cylinder walls, it gets up into the combustion chamber and burned. The higher the rpm the engine is run at and the longer continuous rpm, the more oil they use. I've seen 2 recently that used a quart about every 100 miles on the highway and one that was using a quart every 50 miles. Neither car smoked or leaked. Both cars were very well maintained too. They both started using oil out of the blue. From nearly nothing to huge consumption issues. Replacing the PCV valve and attempting a decarbon by running stuff like seafoam or GM top engine cleaner into the intake and flooding the cylinders did no good. Accordlover 01-21-2009, 08:21 PM I agree with this usage being normal for this motor. 3k mile changes should make this not an issue. I ran one oil change for 5k miles and needed 1.5qts. I'd rather just change the oil every 3k. It's cheap enough. |
