Hahahaha!

Coincidentally, I was driving home from work today. Come to a stop light and a pretentious snob (read Audi driver) pulls up besides me. I'm assuming his A4 was newer cause it had the LED lights under his headlights. Anyhow, long story short, as the light is about to turn green, he is like inching up and he's all ready to go. I decided to see what my 6-6 is made of, and gave him a run for his money. I didn't need to engage into 3rd, because even at then end of 2nd i was more than a car ahead of him. However, I know that i'm not a good enough driver to perfectly launch my 6-6, so question goes out to you good people:

1. Can any A4 ever beat the Gen 8 6-6?

2. How do you do a perfect launch in a 6-6?

Ooops!

Can i still ask about how to properly launch the car?

Sure.

Except there is no one right answer, depending on tire compound, surface traction, ambient temperature, weight distribution at the time, etc.

I have read somewhere in the past that about 15% slip (wheel spin) gives best launch, however there are likely exceptions, perhaps some of the old timer drag racers could share their thoughts of what they've learned on the track.

YRMed
01-22-2009, 06:08 PM
Well, it is my opinion that the stock Gen 8 EX-L V6 tires are inadequate in the case of acceleration. I find that the VSA system is a marvelous invention, not only in the case of preventing unwanted wheel spin during hard acceleration, but from safe driving perspective overall. I can't wait till warmer weather when i'll have a reason to buy tires that have higher levels of grip. I will say that the stock tires are excellent overall, but they obviously were not designed with the driving entusiast in mind.

In regards to the launching, I just can never see myself revving my car past 3k rpm and dropping the clutch. I actually prefer rolling starts because they are much easier on all of the drivetrain parts.

Any opinions?

1. Can any A4 ever beat the Gen 8 6-6?

Maybe off the line since the a4 has more of a top end due to the turbo, but thats talking a stock a4. Now a gen8 with mods and a a4 with only a chip.. you can kiss the a4 goodbye. Just for the simple fact the a4 has turbo a APR tune will have it boosting alot more and he will not only fly out of the hole but will put out some crazy top end numbers.

A friend of mine has on his A4 a custom exhaust, stage 2 APR tune and a high temp oil pump. His cars top speed shown on the dyno was if i believe correctly give or take around 160mph.

Thanks for the reply. However, out of respect for this forum, i don't really wanna discuss what the Gen 8 6-6 will beat or won't beat.

However, still interested in hearing about your car launching techniques, since those can be applied at a track.

lol i dont think the forum has problems with cars racing?.. its street racing thats not permited but there is such thing as legal racing (track racing)

Aviography

Just wanted to be clear, one of the forum rule is against street racing, which is stupid and immature, however racing on tracks, be it auto-X, drag racing, drifting, SCCA racing etc. are all good, since that's the decision a mature individual would make.

Gen 8 6-6 Accord vs. A4 discussions are perfectly fine, provided no reference to street racing is made, ie. "I beat a Prius (or an Yaris) an hour ago coming home."

Hope this clears the air on this issue.

YRMed, thank you for understanding our concerns.

they were like 6,000 k blue i dont think those are stock

the HID's on a Prius are actually bluer than other stock HID's in halogen bowls. i don't know why, but i've noticed it in every Prius i've seen.

you didn't say anything about racing, but saying "i pushed the gas until v-tech kicked in and flew by the fricken thing" states nothing about 60 in a 55. it just says you hit the gas to rev your car beyond 3000 rpm, which is sufficient enough for daily driving not to pass. (i shift at 2k)

i'll put it this way. keep the excessive acceleration on the track, not on the streets.

itstheo54
01-23-2009, 06:53 AM
the thing that annoys me about prius' is that the 40 - 50 year olds think they are special casue they drive one and get the right of way cause they are hybrid i'm always like **** that, we should get a bumper sticker that says Prius=OVERRATED, but no way ould i putt it on my new car haha

zexen
01-23-2009, 06:55 AM
then in my opinion, let them go make a fool of themselves. adults excessively accelerating on public roads doesn't mean you have to show them up. it only proves that you're no better than they are. i get it lots on the road, but just ignore them and let them go. they're not worth my gas or my tires.

I don't know but I see them flying passed me on the highway all the time, defeating the whole saving gas idea.

zexen
01-23-2009, 07:33 AM
once they pick up speed, they save gas like none other. they could be going 90 hit cruise, and the engine will still shut off and just hold speed with the electric engine. so technically... they're still saving more gas than us haha. yes, it ****s.

stevencrosbie
01-23-2009, 08:00 AM
I don't know of any Prius that will do 90 MPH only on its electric motor.....

zexen
01-23-2009, 08:06 AM
if the prius isn't accelerating or going uphill? from what i remember from the idea of the prius, once you hit a crusing speed, the car only reactivates the engine if it needs to accelerate uphill or you hit the gas again. i thought the idea was to use the electric engine to maintain cruise on a flat road, but i could be wrong. inputs, steve?

stevencrosbie
01-23-2009, 08:09 AM
That is only true up to about 40MPH. Highway speeds use both the electric motor and the gas motor to maintain speeds as the electric motors are not powerful enough to keep the car at those speeds.

No current production hybrid will do 90MPH on the highway with only the electric motor.

Probably not even with BOTH :lmao:. Well, downhill maybe :naughty:.

zexen
01-23-2009, 08:12 AM
gotcha. i guess i thought the electric could hold speed in highway speeds too, since the car already has most of the momentum going. i guess i can see that the car would slow down faster at higher speeds, requiring more power to maintain its speed.

stevencrosbie
01-23-2009, 08:15 AM
The equation for the force required to combat air drag is:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/math/7/6/1/7613c56c8438ae8fa328dcbd4f4f4e7c.png

The important part to understand is the "u" is velocity and you see it is squared.

Drag increases by the square of its velocity and therefore you need a lot more power to maintain high speeds verses low speeds.

Thanks for clearing that up, Steven. You guys do have a point. How could I ever think such a car as a Prius could hit 90mph. That'd go in the Guinness Book of World Records.

stevencrosbie
01-23-2009, 08:23 AM
The Prius might be able to hit 90, just not on the electric motor alone.

We joke about the car being slow...that's all :D

zexen
01-23-2009, 08:27 AM
As was I. The Prius electric engine tops out at 42mph. The entire car itself tops out at ~100mph. some are only getting 97-98mph tops, and others get 104mph on a downhill. So in essense, possible... with a lot of work, and a lot of open road lol.

Aviography

I drove a Prius for 3 days just this week while on buiness out-of-town.

It won't maintain speed on electric alone above only 15 MPH or so even if you are very light on the throttle, if that, and you can certainly see via the charging graphics that the engine does a lot of work at regular speeds, but shuts down on extended deceleration or sitting at the lights.

I admit I thrashed the car a little bit just to see how the power flow between the engine, the motor/generator, and the battery, it's quite fascinating, got calculated 34 MPG over about 150 miles of driving.

Although the headlights on the Prius I had were just conventional halogen rather than the HID as some people on this thread have posted, I am pretty certain since I had to clear the slush off the headlights a couple of times and they are definitely not HID on the Prius I drove.

Aviography

When you "floor it" in an attempt to prove the other driver that your car is faster then his/hers, then it's called racing, whether you say the racing word, or not, is academic. Check with your local police department if you don't believe this, better yet try it out in front of your local police station and see what happens.

Stop digging the hole you are already in any deeper.

if you've been on enough forums, most should realize that the post that says "street racing" may not have just been the words street racing, but an actual post that was written over by a mod because he did post something about street racing.

btw, excessive acceleration even to a "speed limit" is still considered street racing. one of my best friend's got arrested for just that, including 120hr community service, $2000 fine, and 4 points on his record. don't think just because you stop at 40 in a 40, you can get away with redlining your car at every red light.
