Me and the wife are having a hard time trying to find a new dog. We want a Corgi, but a good one is hard to find around here central FL. So, we are open to other medium size dogs that are similar. We love border collies, but our house and yard are not big enough (too hyper).

We have 4 standards that we are looking for in a new dog....

1) has to get a long with our cats... we don't want to piss them off
2) has to be laid back, not hyper....We are very laid back people
3) Older than a year or so....our house is not puppy/kid friendly...we don't want our stuff getting chewed up
4) can't come from a breeder or puppy mill.....rescue dogs will love you more for saving their life

Have you thought about a medium sized Clifford Stuffed Animal?

I only suggest this because they are easy to find (Red) and kids love them. Plus there is no feces on the floor when you come home late.

You're not going to find any dog that automatically gets along with cats. That requires a great deal of work and training for both. I'm with you on the rescue dog though

We went to a lot of private rescues in the Orlando area, just meeting all the dogs until we fell in love. If you have time, you should expand your search radius, but rescue it the way to go.

We have noticed that "rescue people" usually are not too good with humans though.

We adopted 2 cats and one dog from www.petrescuebyjudy.com with no issues and the animals are amazing. Good luck!

We want a corgi because they are a very calm breed. Every rescue site says that they get a long pretty well with cats.

The one draw back is that they are herding dogs, and they tend to herd small children.

Wasteoffur's are usually pretty good, but it depends on their mix. :D

Our Chihuahua surprisingly hit it off almost instantly with the cat (the dog came before the cat). They play (tackle each other and play hide-n-seek) and there's no territory wars. But a Chihuahua is probably too small of a breed or too annoying for you. Ours is great (quiet and not too active) but he is a pain in the ass when we have neighbors or friends over (very protective, especially for being a rescue dog).

I got a little white terrier mix from a rescue shelter about 7 years ago and shes a sweetheart! If you have a Vet you trust ask them to help you look, thats what I did. Shes perfect, kinda foofoo looking but shes my best friend.

A few laid-back breeds are: St. Bernard, Labrador Retriever, French Bulldog, Basset Hound, Pug, Mastiff, Shih Tzu, Pekingese, and Bulldog. And I know that a Pug and Bulldog will get along fine with cats... well, at least my neighbor's does. I think that if you get the dog when it's young (pup), you'll have an easier time getting it use to the cats.

On www.Petfinder.org you can do an advanced search and check a box to exclude dogs that are not good with children. Usually these results will get along better with cats. They also tell you upfront if they don't get along with cats for whatever reason. These are all rescues too.

We found 5 Corgis in the next county over on Petfinder , but the rescue that had them was a fly by night. Never answered their phones. We google earth'ed them to find out that they were in a sketchy part of the boonies.

Petfinder is a good site, but usually the dogs we find that we like are very far away.

What about a Schnauzer? My GF and I have one and he is an excellent dog. No behavorial issues, no major incidents, very calm when relaxing at home. He is also very good around small children and other animals.

I can recommend a few dogs but it comes down to choices for your family, I recommend buying the Dog Bible book to help you in this process. You guys can pick your top 5 each and then use the book to compare picks and use it to help you make a final decision, thats what I did.
