MDX whine

Here's an article I found about it.....

Amazing that 30-40% of "failed" ATs really don't have anything wrong with them!!

Interesting...A friend of mine just had to replace their transmission on their 2002 MDX @ about 85K. I drove it a few weeks ago it had nasty harsh downshifts and upshifts, long engagments and generally just felt like it was on it's last leg. They had their mounts changed before this as well, a common problem on the MDX. The 03 TL they also own is on it's third transmission (first at 35K, again at 80K!). That's quite something.

The TL is a different tranny & has the same second gear issue as some Accords.

Does this apply to the second generation MDX, my mom is looking at a 2007 MDX and she really doesn't want any transmission problems!

I would say 2005+ models are doing a lot better so far. 07's have a different transmission.

They had their mounts changed before this as well, a common problem on all Honda SUV/minivan since the engineers had no idea what torque is/does.

Fixed

Of course they're doing a lot better, they're still practically new...

According to the article, about half of the "condemned" trannies have nothing wrong with them. When sent in the techs that do the detective work by taking them all apart they are NOT finding the flaws reported. Many are being turned in just to shut the consumers up instead of figuring out what's really going on. Since reman'd ones get the external parts put right back on that were on the one they are removing, you can end up with the EXACT same issue. This would be if the issue were external & not internal. It would be best to have to properly diagnosed, not just replaced.

This isn't all the consumer's fault. Honda has made it near impossible to make a living at diagnosing. Techs find it easier to just condemn them than to find the real answers since they usually don't get paid for it. In doing so, the prices of the cars & the parts go up so the corp. can absorb the difference. Nothing is free. There's a handful of dealerships that have addressed the problem by have a tech do ALL the diagnostic & get a salary instead of an hourly wage. Those are the smart dealers. Then the cars have the time taken that's needed to actually find the problem. In those cases, rarely is the whole tranny sent in. Just the flawed part.

The only recall or campaign on the '07 MDX is for a lug wrench which easily strips.
