How many miles on it? Get the codes read at Autozone or someplace that reads them for free. Being a 97 you maybe eligible for free tune ups at the Honda dealer. Hopefully someone else can confirm this or call up some local dealers and ask them.

Replace the pcv valve(easy) with an oem one. This may help reduce oil consumption if it hasn't replaced in a long time.

If you do end up going to the dealer just mention the problems and don't mention anything about a headgasket. Let them make the diagnosis. Otherwise they might go ahead and do the hg repair which costs mega $$$.

Sounds like it maybe misfiring. Get a tune-up and maybe even change the spark plug wires and clean the fuel injectors as a start.

That would be my 1st guess. Go to Advanced, Autozone, Pep Boys and they can check right there b4 you buy something you dont even need. Let the car tell you whats wrong before you go looking for a needle in a hay stack as my family used to say..lol. Keep us posted.

does the RPM change when the engine is "shaking the crap out of the car"?
