View Full Version : How can i fill the holes if i remove the decklid spoiler?
Indubitably 02-04-2009, 01:34 PM I know many people on this forum prefer the decklid over the wing spoiler but i personally really like the wing one.. i believe aznxtl told me that if i remove the decklid there will be holes on the trunk though.. does anyone know a good way to fill it? someone also suggested me to just trade trunks with another car that wants the decklid over the wing lol..
AznX TL 02-04-2009, 01:52 PM fill it with bondo and get it repainted. its going to cost you though.
and if you don't believe that it is screwed in, take off the carpet to the top of your trunk and reach your arm upto where the lip spoiler is. if you don't feel any screws or clips than they used tape, which i highly doubt they did.
EvolNtent 02-04-2009, 01:55 PM You can't just bondo a hole. You have to weld the hole up, grind it down, bondo, sand, and finally paint. If you just bondo it it will crack and fall out. Bondo has little tensile strength.
Honda247 02-04-2009, 01:56 PM Or you can jus plug them. Cheaper and if you want to reinstall the lip spoiler just remove the plugs. Its the same idea as the bumper plugs i posted only just for the trunk lid...

Osiris_x11 02-04-2009, 02:02 PM For an ideal, back to original finish/look, the holes would have to be filled by using a filler material (could be a resin like bondo, or a metal compound... both w/ a reinforcing micro-mesh on the otherside of the hole adhered to the surface using an epoxy). Then sand/primer/paint/clear-coat the surface, either completely repainting the whole trunk's deck-lid or blending-in the paint w/ the surrounding area.
Though it won't be 100% as good as the solution above, a body-shop/paint-expert can fill the holes & use touch-up paint/clear-coat. Results may vary, but it'd be the most cost effective solution.
There's really no other somewhat aesthetically appealing alternative, I'm afraid to say. . .
EvolNtent 02-04-2009, 02:07 PM Ask any paint/body guy...no way to fill a 1/4" hole correctly w/bondo or filler alone. That shit will vibrate loose and then you will see a ring around the material and eventually it will crack and the filler and paint will fall out leaving the hole.
shamutruck 02-04-2009, 02:09 PM .............cheapest, find an LX or EX I4 owner that has the same color you do and swap trunk lids.
The only proper way to fill the holes is to weld them, hacks use filler.
Osiris_x11 02-04-2009, 02:21 PM Based on my personal experiences (I'm not a pro' paint/body guy), reinforced fillers & other techniques can fill small holes whether on resin/plastic or metal body-parts.
I removed a front-lip/sport-splitter from my lower front-bumper valance on my other vehicle. It had been attached using special rivets/fasteners, which left 1/4" holes, some 3/8". The shop filled them in, using 1/8" - 1/4" pieces of flat resin/plastic w/ adhesive filler/putty material securing them & ultimately giving a flat/smooth surface to paint on.
Similar deal when I removed some side-skirts/rocker-panels & replaced them w/ OEM/stock ones. There were some holes that needed filled (the previous installer used self tap-in screws into the body, which was metal). This time, a special metal-putty was used.
In both instances, the results were solid as the vehicle was a daily-driver in a multi-seasonal climate, seeing high-speeds. . .
This site below is golden, so to speak, showing all that is offered for varying needs/purposes:
www.tcpglobal.com/autobodydepot/evercoat.aspx
However, when it comes 'sealing' antenna holes, keyholes on door-locks, bullet-holes (:naughty:), and so forth, a piece of metal is generally welded into place. But w/ smaller holes, creative solutions can be implemented w/ great success (ie. using smaller resin/metal pieces, a micro-mesh secured by permanent adhesives, etc'). . .

This the best way. IMO Alot of my Civic buddies do this.
bruceleroy 02-04-2009, 03:20 PM yea trade trunks would be the best route i think.

:dunno: thats how i learned how to finish a shaved trunk. bondo for the holes where the main badge is.
nighthawkcoupe 02-04-2009, 03:48 PM Indubitably, where are you located?
Indubitably 02-04-2009, 04:28 PM i live in southern california.. thanks for all the comments guys.. i might just end up sticking with the deck spoiler then lol.. the next mod on my list was either the wing spoiler or eibachs or powder coating my stock wheels
Indubitably 02-04-2009, 04:32 PM lol i think i would only do the trunk swap if the other guy already had the wing spoiler on but he wanted the deck spoiler.. feels like im taking a loss giving the deck spoiler away :( it truly doesn't look bad but i like the wing better
Osiris_x11 02-04-2009, 04:47 PM ... feels like im taking a loss giving the deck spoiler away :( it truly doesn't look bad but i like the wing betterIf it's any consolation, the labor/materials to professionally take care of the drilled-holes in the trunk's deck-lid would cost a lot more than the V6 coupe's $90 OEM-accessory lip-spoiler, not to mention the final result might not even be all that great or lasting. Will $90 keep you awake at night? lolz. . .
Find someone w/ the same color Accord coupe who wants the spoiler, hopefully locally, and meet half-way... meaning take some cash & swap. Not eggactly rocket-science or brain-surgery to come to such an arrangement. . .
BTW, after-market replica wing-spoiler color-matched w/LED & install hardware/template is ~$110/shipped. Not a bank-breaker by any means. . .
Xazntkddragon12 02-04-2009, 05:08 PM i think the dealer has plugs for them
but dont take my word for it
zexen 02-04-2009, 05:37 PM I'm with Osiris. Find someone with the same color that wants the spoiler, and swap with them asking for like $50 in return. You're then not losing as much, but you're going to take a loss regardless if you decide to clean it up yourself.
RSX members used to use a rubber grommet to cover the holes from the ITR wings people would install. These could be painted using traditional spray paint before install and would hold very well and not allow water in. I had a set somewhere. They're genuine Honda Parts. Just have no idea where they are or what part #'s anymore.
Indubitably 02-04-2009, 06:30 PM anyone down? lol would be even better if you had the wing on yours already
Osiris_x11 02-04-2009, 06:39 PM anyone down? lol would be even better if you had the wing on yours already :wave:Don't hold-out for a NHBP trunk-lid w/ a wing-spoiler as those are quite cheap (ala' ebay). Take what you can. I'd go so far as to trade the trunk-lid w/ the lip-spoiler for one w/o a lip-spoiler, staight-up (no money), as you'd be getting a clean/unblemished trunk-lid vs. plugging/repainting your own (who knows how that will turn-out, let alone the cost). Just ask the other party involved to pay for all the shipping-costs. Or a lunch/dinner if ya'll meet in-person. . .
But, of-course ideally try get some moolah from them. Just have to keep in mind that the new OEM lip-spoiler is $90'ish from Honda (genuine part, not replica). You gotta provide an incentive for someone to want an used one when they can get a brand-new one for the aforementioned amount. . .
Try Vtec.net, Honda-Tech, and v6performance or whatever it's called... lotsa' peeps on those Honda sites always tinkerin' w/ their rides.
Or be like me, do what you want now & deal w/ selling/trading later (as I look over to my right and see dozens upon dozens of parts)!
LateNites 02-05-2009, 05:19 AM anyone down? lol would be even better if you had the wing on yours already
I am still down...if you want to come to Alabama lol, but I do have the wing spoiler
