VFR pilot 02-05-2009, 04:36 AM for those w/ rear/ft brakes replaced at low miles
has anybody actually looked at their pads? or did you take the dealers word?
do you know what your looking at if you looked at it?
LateNites 02-05-2009, 04:44 AM I had my rears replaced at 24k miles. I did not look at them, but they had the squeel that occurs when the brake pads are completely worn and not even touching the brakes. It was not just the normal brake noise. Luckly my dealer hadn't had any complaints about this yet and they agreed to replace the rear pads and turn the rear rotors at no cost.

Never said I had low miles, but all my miles are highway. I drive 85 miles a day. I decided to take to dealer for a brake job instead of doing it myself. They said it should not be time for the brakes to be replaced so they did it for free. I said ok and left the dealer running before they decided to charge me for it.
Accordiac 02-05-2009, 05:26 AM Low miles for rear brakes, 28K, but yes I saw the pads. They were down to the squeelers and making some serious noise before going in.
garthian84 02-05-2009, 07:41 AM 24k is extremely low for pad replacement. I put 65,000miles an 03 civic before this car and never replaced the brakes once

no it isnt! it all depends how you drive, if you drive like you stole it you will have to replace pads in 10k miles. it all depends how you drive

^ +1, I hardly use my brakes. As stated above I drive 85 miles per day, 75 of that is highway with only 2 red lights on it, the rest of it I drive 65-70mph. And my brakes were gone at 24K miles. I have seen others on here with theirs being replaced at 12K miles, but they admitted they drove it like they stole it.
elp_jc 02-05-2009, 08:03 AM has anybody actually looked at their pads?
The rears (outer ones) are visible thru the wheels, so that's a good idea to check them. I have personal experience with dealers trying to rip us off (my wife, really) with brake jobs when they're less than half worn, so no, I wouldn't just take the dealer's word. Take care.

yes that has some bearing, but most people don't drive like bat outta hell.
i had a miata that i auto-x'ed and drove hard and replaced pads 1x in 180k mi
accord08201 02-05-2009, 01:08 PM i replaced my pads at 14k.....my pads were worn out....NEVER TRUST THE DEALER.... they told me i needed new breaks at 9k

I agree that this can have some influence. If you speed up to 90 and then slam on the brakes constantly you will wear them out faster, but 24k is still really low for any type of normal driving.

03 Civic has front disks and rear drums. It also doesn't have EBD. I had a 02 Civic and replaced my pads around that time too, but having smaller pads in the back of the accord that are being used more frequently results in low miles for replacement.
Honda247 02-05-2009, 02:14 PM I was told by my service writer when i repalced my rerar brakes at 26k that this is common. I showed them my pads, the inner ones were worn, and the outer one still had some meat on them. One of the techs looked at them and stated that in cold wheather the caliper sliders tends to seize up, there for uneven pad wear. They also said that EBD is a factor......
jdccb 02-05-2009, 06:32 PM The only part of the rear brakes going that truly bothered me, besides the fact that it happened around 25k, was that the thing that makes them squeal, was making them squeal with some legitimate pad life left. I was getting the squeal, changed the pads on my own, and they were clearly going, but a couple more thousand miles were probably doable, or at least a week or two to look around for pads and prices rather then having to buy them immediately due to aggravation generated by that damn squealing

You can bend the indicator back if you wish...those things aren't precision made, they're just cheap pieces of metal, it's going to have a little play it in from pad to pad. They probably design a little leftover pad in to give people time. But my old Accord, when I replaced it at my indy mechanic, he showed me the pad and it was down to the last 1mm.
I would be interested to see the pads as well, I suspect that this is a caliper design problem. It could be that one side (outer or inner) is wearing out way faster. I know on my Ody when I replaced the front pads, the front right outside (no piston) was down pretty good, but the inner (piston pushing on it) was still lookin good. Seems odd to me :dunno:
monkeygwd 02-06-2009, 04:06 PM I just had to have my rear pads on my 08 sedan replaced at 20k. Never had any trouble with brake wear before. This just seems WAY too soon.

I had my brake making squeeling sounds at 5,000 miles. The dealer said it was okay but since it was covered under warranty, they change the front brake pads and resurface the rotors to see if the noise went away. It's been a month and noise is gone.

The dealer did that for me too. But after a month or 2, the noise came back. I only had ~1800 miles on my car the first time I brought it back.
jblaust 02-07-2009, 04:01 AM I had my front pads changed and the rotors cut at 3k miles. I didn't see them, but I never heard another sound after they finally changed them. It only took about 4 or 5 visits to the dealer to get them to listen to my problem. It was an intermitent squeeling and evertime I went back to the dealer it wouldn't do it for them. It was very loud though when it did it.

The service advisor warned me in advance that the sound may come back. According with Honda customer service, they are aware of the situation and their Engineers are trying to find a fix but for reason I find that hard to believe.
