2004 AV6. Temp gauge showed it was 34 degrees outside this afternoon (93.2 F). Climate control was set to 26. Drove around for some errands. Some Expressway driving, some city driving.

Fiancee noticed the cabin was getting pretty warm, sure enough the A/C wasn't shooting cold air and the engine temp was waaaaaaaaaaaaaay high!!

Pulled off into a parking lot, opened all the windows, turned the heat on full blast for a minute or so and the engine temp started to come down. (Never thought I would need to use that trick.) Once the temp got back down, turned A/C back on and hit the road. Temp stayed warmer than usual, but not super high. Made it home before the car had another chance to overheat.

Anyway, just wondering if I should get it checked out? I didn't check to see if the fan on the front of the car was running or not at the time of the overheat. Wait to see if it overheats again and check the fan? Or was it just too hot today?

I've never had a car overheat before.

I live in Texas (DFW) and it was like that today. Took our LX for about 50 miles total driving in city, lunch, this store, that store... you know... not a single problem like that! I'd definitely take it in and ask.

That's not to normal, by any chance did you replenish the anitfreeze or did you have a coolant flush at the dealer or elsewhere lately?

How much mileage is on your car? Could be a sticking thermostat... If you had some cooling system work done recently and if the level of coolant is right in the radiator and resv tank; could be that they didn't "bleed" all the air out of the system... Too much air in the system can cause an overheating condition also...

I would definately take it in and get it checked...

I had to use the "high heat" trick before in my dad's '93 caravan.... That thing would overheat anytime the A/C is used and the car isn't moving.

I would definately bring the car in for a checkup. You should still be under warranty and 34 C isn't really hot enough to oveheat most cars.. Never had a Honda overheat. The radiator in my old civic was only half the size of the Accord's and I never had any problem with overheating. :dunno:

but, in an old civic, everything is half the size..... :lmao:

Good point! Half the engine size (1.6L vs 3.0), twice as long to warm up (10 minutes vs 5 minutes), half the gas tank (11.9 gal vs 17.9 gal), half a car! :lmao: I don't think I'd drive another economy car again. I got spoiled with the Accord! ;)

34,000 kilometres on the car. No cooling sytem work done, I usually do that every 2 years. I usually drive highway or short distances, so it could have been broken long time ago and I just didn't know about it.

It's going in tomorrow to get checked out. Also going to get the tranny flushed/filled. Will let you know what they find! Thanks all

At 34,000K (~21,000 miles) the car is barely broken in. You shouldn't have those problems. Hopefully they will be able to fix it in 1 shot so you wouldn't have to bring your car there every time it gets past 34C!

Considering it is typically in the hundreds here in the summer, and it was 103 F the other day (39.4 C) and my 6 Cyl Accord didnt show any real rise in temp, there is definately something you should look into. Hopefully its something small like a thermostat or water pump...

last i knew, water pumps aren't small.... lucky the car's still under warranty....

Good luck and keep us posted! I hope the problem occurs when the dealer checks it out!!!

Lol, you nailed it. "Couldn't duplicate problem, vehicle did not overheat". Fan was operational.

Service person says "Might not be able to fix it until it breaks!!" *SIGH* Riiiiight.

So on the way home, lots of stop and go traffic because there's so much construction going on...outside temp says 35 (uh - oh) Was going back to work for overtime, and decided to grab something from the drive through.

Had the window down, and when I hit the accelerator I heard this gawd-awful grinding noise from under the car, thought it was someone else. After I paid, hit the accelerator again to get my food at the next and again it made a loud grinding noise, what the heck? Grabbed my dinner and started to drive off, there it is again..... it WAS coming from my car!!! :bawling:

Great, so I figure my tranny is now fubar'd since I just replaced the tranny fluid, they probably messed something up like forget to refill it or something.

That's when I noticed the cabin was getting hot again...sure enough, temp needle was just below the red and A/C wasn't blowing cold anymore. I just drove it and I guess the car's movement was enough to get it cooled down, but still no A/C. So I just turned the A/C on and off and it came back.

At the stop sign, it didn't make the grinding noise (huh?). Buuut, when I pulled into the parking lot, I stopped and started and it made the grinding noise again (maybe it's pretty subtle, so I need an enclosed area for it to echo??)....and engine temp went up again.

I'm guessing the grinding noise has something to do with it...got to drop it off tomorrow again :/ Don't have time for this.

Oh, and they didn't put the synthetic oil I had on my passenger seat in for me. Even though I reminded the service guy TWICE!! UGH!!!!

I know how frustrating it must be to try to locate the problem with your car if it's temperature related. I had a rattle that would only show up when it's hotter than 65 degrees out. The catch is every time I bring the car to the dealer, it's below 50 :dunno: :) You could have a tech sit in the car with you while you drive it if that helps.

growling noise? Sounds like the water pump.

Just got a call back from dealership. Broken fan switch/connector. Grinding noise was the fan spinning up and then stopping (??? Not sure what that means). They're not sure how it broke, so no warranty, but they'll split the cost. Fair enough I think.

Thanks for all your suggestions!

if your car's under warranty they should cover it 100%!!! :thumbsdow Don't let them sway you with that 50/50 talk...

Being an '04, unless you have over 36K with no extended warranty.....it should ALL be covered! The only exception would be if it was clearly modified. So that 50/50 stuff is not right!! :thumbsdow

They asked if the front bumper was ever taken off. My driver's side fender was hit by an errant door back in December. I remember the repair person saying they only took off the tire to bang the dent back out.

I also have a front grille on there, so they said the installer may have damaged it somehow :dunno:

Either way, it's good now! We hit 38 and she was just cooooool as can be.
