That may be true, but the question is: "A gallon of what???"
When you let your tank get that low, you are asking for trouble, as whatever is sitting on the bottom gets sucked through your injectors...
Why do you think the light is there 3 to 4 gallons before empty? Just to remind you not to run out of gas? It is to protect your car.
Are you sure you are not subconsciously trying to create another reason to trade it in...? :naughty:

You're also depriving your fuel pump from it's main source of cooling.. The gas. :blah: But it IS temptimg to test your luck and see how far you can go before the car bogs down and dies. ;)
I drove from Amherst to Boston once on "E". I was in my mom's Camry. The light turned on after I drive for 5 miles and I was too lazy to pull into a gas station until I was almost home. The total trip was about 90 miles, all highway. :blah:

Oh. forgot you got a I4-manual for a split second.. You could probably pull more than 120 miles out of your tank without worry about going dry. :blah:

i just find it amazing that in 3 days with ac on max and temps in the upper 80's/low 90's, high humidity, the works, rush hour traffic, that i somehow barely touched the actual reserve???? :notworthy

You may want to avoid stopping on any inclines when you're really low on gas. Happened twice to me in my ('87) Accord - once at a traffic light in the middle of winter  , & the other time in my driveway.

i'm gonna turn this car into the "how much abuse can on e poor honda take?" car...
it's been thru too much and has not been repaired properly (ask stevel or michnyc who got to view it...) so now i'm having "fun" with it........... ;) not abusing abusing though. i hardly consider letting the gas light come on being abuse. :blah: besides, it turns out i still had 3 gallons left.... :dunno:

I don't qualify to vote..... I've never put gas in.
In whatever HE drives to work he often goes much further than he should. He has been within a half gallon of max. when he fills it. As long as I'm not with him.....I don't care.
Now on the way home from DL he's often threatened to not gas up in Lodi. At that point we've gone 375 miles, up the grapevine, had a meal stop & 6 pee stops & been doing 85...... the light sometimes (when windy) comes on before Stockton & home is only about 65 miles away..... on a lonely dark levee road after Lodi...... ummmm, no, WE GET IT FILLED UP!!!
Most of the time, my car isn't ever below a quarter tank. Then it's "magically" full! Anymore, I don't even look at my gauge...... I've been out on a long adventure before & actually looked & it was pretty low...... I continue to ignore it....figuring it would disrupt his day even more than mine... he would drop everything & rescue me. He'd be too worried about me stranded not to.
So I'd say, "light? what light?"
He'd say he'd make it one more day.....
He did run out once......in my '86 when we were out on errands. Right accross the street from a gas station..... I helped push. He's never lived it down!

look!!! even the honda tech runs it low!!!! :jumping:
i've been within a little less than a gallon of running out in this car.... i've been darn close to running out in both civics. :lmao:
i rarely put more than half a tank in my car at a time. it lasts about a week and a half now. and i like seeing $15 at the pump instead of $30..... ;)

The lowest I've been to in my Civic was 0.4 gallons left.. I was in the middle of nowhere, western Mass and the closest gas station was a local brand that was closed.... I had to drive 35 miles until I found a Shell that was open. Scariest 35 miles I've driven! It's 9pm, pitch dark all around and I saw no cars on the road! :paranoid:
I've never run out, though. I tend to have a good grasp of how much further I can go before I'm REALLY empty!

He THOUGHT he did too....until that day in the '86!!
I rarely broke 20 mpg in that thing....with ALL in town drivng....rushing to get kids to school..... same with the '82. You know how many streets are empty right when school starts? All the parents on gone, the kids are in their classes... well, I would do nearly Indy speeds trying to get the youngest one to school! It's about a 10 minute drive to the junior high she went to.... I got it down to 3 minutes!
Anyway, I don't think driving out that last bit is good for the car unless you do it everytime....then there's less crud in the bottom. It's still not the best for the enternal pumps. Buying gas that has less crud is good... but not always easy to find since they don't advertise "crud free". In therory, if you drive it empty on a regular basis then you'd have less "other" stuff in the bottom, right?
If you run out, then the lights come on & you feel really stupid.
:dunno:
MOST important.....don't forget the gas cap!!!! It'll make your check engine light come on & the car will code on you!!!
Princesses don't pump their own gas........ :lmao:

I don't get it.... unless the crud floats, it should be the first thing to go in the gas tank. The fuel pickup should be on the bottom of the tank. :dunno:

I'm sure there's floating crud & sinking crud.... watery stuff would float....some others (particles) sink.
I think the amount is small & not worth growing a gray hair over!
We haven't had a contemination problem with our cars.... the only ones we've seen are ones that the owners consistantly use really cheap off brand gas. Especially after a BIG rain. The holding tanks at the stations are SUPPOSED to be made so the run off doesn't get in there..... but...... :paranoid:

who knows..... i run mine way down darn near everytime.... ;) around here amoco is rumored to have some of the "cleanest" gas. which now means bp also because bp is now using amoco gas... i usually stop at either bp or exxon since both are right in my path to and from work.
stick some of the fuel line cleaner in the car every once in awhile... should save ya....... :lmao:

yeah, my dad has run into contaminated gas before and banned my mom from filling up at some specific stations and yelled at her for going to them in the first place............ :lmao:
i avoided going to a few stations for quite awhile after last sept's flooding from ivan. i knew they had been flooded or where sitting right beside the creek and had a good chance of water having gotten into the holding tanks..... i went out of my way to go to places that seemed like they'd be "safe".

I run fuel cleaner every 30k miles or so, but I never notice any difference in the way the car drives.. I noticed a huge improvement when I went from dino oil to synthetic, though! More seat-of-the-pants power and better gas mileage!

note to self~learn how to change my own freaking oil.
SSMV6
06-09-2005, 10:22 AM
Changing oil is easy if you got the right tools.. All you really need is a bucket, a socket wrench and a oil filter wrench (probably don't need this, but it makes your life much easier). I haven't done an oil change in the Accord, yet, but I'm guessing it's a 14mm socket for the oil drain bolt.
You could always make a strip over to stiller fans' house... I'm sure he could teach you how to change you own oil.

That's too bad.. I guess it's time to start making friends with people who would let you work on your car at their garages. :D You can always deny you're working on the car and say that you're actually cleaning the car's engine! :lmao:

Tewksbury is a pretty long drive.. RT-9 is too slow and RT-2 goes a little out of the way. I live in Brighton, so on a good day I could get home in 1 hour 25 minutes. I'd be doing 80+ the whole way, but I can get back in record time!

I have to admit, I am not a fan of driving around on "E" even if it ever means giving up on food money for gas. I have AAA but I wouldn't even count on them coming to call in under 4 hrs. The bf made me wait one weekend and he drove my car around for two days with the low fuel light on. "It's a Honda, there's plenty of gas in there" "It's good to let it run real low once in awhile". I would have sworn there was nothing left when he finally let me fill it up. To my surpise, after over 100mi with the nice light on there was still 4 gallons left in the tank. :dunno:
So I lost that one and took the title of "worry wort" but oh well. :lmao:
