View Full Version : Anyone have a cool install of a GPS on an 8th Gen? Klutch 02-16-2009, 08:25 AM I hate the stick it to the windshield look, anyone come up with a cool spot/install of a GPS in their car? PICS! arasheht 02-16-2009, 08:57 AM Here's a good place to get some ideas: http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/showthread.php?t=22155&highlight=GPS+mount&page=3 Osiris_x11 02-16-2009, 02:24 PM I have the Pioneer AVIC-F500BT (www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Products/Navigation/Portable/AVIC-F500BT) which is hard-wired in my other vehicle (using an actual OEM-accessory Nav' pod), but it comes w/ an additional 12-volt cig' light adapter for use in other vehicles, as well as it's own integrated lithium-ion battery for portable use. This AVIC-F500BT GPS-NAV' unit can be inserted into the LED-display area of non-NAV' 8th gen' Accord models (above the climate-control array), and the OEM/stock LED-display can then be reinstalled further below on center-console area (below the OEM/stock head-unit) in the cd-changer slot or below it where to storage bin/space is located. The LED-display area above the climate-control then needs to be slightly modified to properly fit the AVIC-F500BT (easily done by an after-market stereo shop or even a D.I.Y.; for reversibility, an extra OEM piece can be purchased inexpensively from the dealer). Then a $25-$75 aux' input-converter will integrate the AVIC-F500BT w/ the OEM/stock head-unit & speakers, offering all the features of the AVIC-F500BT seamlessly (GPS-NAV' w/ 3-D landmarks modes, touch-screen LCD, Bluetooth, voice-activated dialing/functions/directions/commands, MP3 hard-drive via SD-card, direct iPod connectivity, reverse-camera input, ext' aux' jack, A/V input for gaming/DVD's/etc', and myriad of other features). . . I made the measurements already & even mocked-up the AVIC-F500BT into the LED-display slot. I am contemplating getting a 2nd one to make a perma' install for the Accord. For the price & features it offers, it's unparalleled at the moment. And the relatively easy install makes it all the more appealing. . . Klutch 02-16-2009, 02:27 PM Got pics? Osiris_x11 02-16-2009, 02:48 PM Got pics?Heya! I haven't done the perma' install yet so no pics' to share. But, it'd be literally identical to the description I gave in my previous post. I've considered doing this as it'll far surpass all of those ebay Southeast Asia made 'no-name' after-market GPS-NAV' setups in terms of quality, price, features, support/warranty, and usability. Also, it's a more cost-effective solution compared to the high-end marquee Garmin/Magellan/TomTom offerings (~5.4"+ TFT touch-screen LCD's, Bluetooth, expandability via SD, aux' input, A/V input, iPod direct-link, etc') which will cost twice as much w/o all the features. . . The AVIC-F500BT is not a double-DIN head-unit that's ~7"+ in depth; though it's the same height/length as those, but only ~1" thick at most while weighing less than a pound. . . Goto BestBuy or an after-market stereo-shop to get some real-time perspective of the AVIC-F500BT size/setup, and or use the dimensions from the aforementioned web-site, cut-out a piece of cardboard or paper in the precise size & super-impose that over the OEM/stock LED-display above the climate-control (the inward tapering console portion where the LED-display resides). Some trimming of the console 'bezel' may be recommended for a precise/ideal fit (but not entirely necessary as I placed the AVIC-F500BT into the slot easily), but perhaps a custom-bezel/bracket might be necessary (any/all stereo-installed make these) to fasten the AVIC=F500BT securely, as well as facilitate removal for use in other vehicles or applications; this custom-bezel/bracket will give a seamless/flush appearance on par w/ OEM/stock NAV' setups. . . IMHO, there's no other comparable solution/alternative that's on par w/ the OEM/stock GPS-NAV' setup like this Pioneer offering. The AVIC-F500BT can be acquired brand-new for $200-$350 (online vendors are obviously the low-end of the pricing spectrum, but there's the risk of Gray-market inventory & dated software... so do your due-diligence, but of-course!). . .
