View Full Version : Speedometer acting weird......HELP!!
95F225speed 02-18-2009, 04:00 PM Ok I have a 5th Gen, F22 5spd, my speedometer is acting weird now, when I am at 1st and 2nd gear, the speed reads 0, but when I shift to 3rd, it starts to climb up and bounce around, especially on the hwy, I can feel that I'm only going 60 but the needle would be bouncing around 75-90:dunno:. (note: IT ONLY DOES THAT WHEN IT'S COLD OR WHEN THE ENGINE HAD BEEN SHUT OFF FOR A WHILE.) I took out my friend's speed sensor and put it in my car, it does the same thing (his speedo works fine) So do u guys think it's a bad speed sensor or a bad speedo?
Any opinion would be greatly appreciated.
Accordlover 02-18-2009, 04:05 PM It's common for the odometer/speedos to go on the 94-95 Accord's. Check and see if your ODO still works.
95F225speed 02-18-2009, 04:16 PM The odo seems to be in working condition, I mean at least the trip meter works, but I really do think it's my speedometer, cuz when I switched sensors with my friend, it did the same thing.
I had this happen on (I think) my 4th gen years ago. Right before I had to repair a bunch of crap - I forget what was wrong. Did you check the cable?
stiller fan 02-18-2009, 04:47 PM you may need to replace the entire cluster.
see what happens if you can swap them....
another one is the vehicle speed sensor (VSS).

I had the speedo head replaced twice on my '94. First time both the speedo and odo quit. My friendly dealer diagnosed it as a head failure and replaced the unit. The second failed with 8k on it. They replaced that with a red face under warranty.
The symptoms you describe sound very much like cars with bad speedometer cables. Your Accord doesn't have a speedometer cable, so you may have a problem, as others have noted, with the VSS. Here's an interesting, perhaps helpful, link:

95F225speed 02-18-2009, 11:34 PM well if it is the speed sensor, why does it do the same thing when I was running on my friend's sensor? and I know for a fact that his sensor works because he doesn't have that problem. So it's the instrument cluster then? I'll try to post some videos that I've taken just today so that u guys can see what it's doing.
I think you've answered your own question. If you swapped the vss and the problem remains, I'd go for the speedo. If the odo works while speedo is jumping around or resting at 0mph, that's a good indication it's not the vss. The odo is still getting a reading from the vss. Look into swapping the inst. cluster. You may be able to swap just the speedo section.
95F225speed 02-19-2009, 02:46 PM Alright so out of all the conspiracies, I had finally diagnosed that my speedo is officially out, because this morning when I drove, the needle jumped all the way to 130 while I was only going 50, then it just dropped to the 6 o'clock position, and when I start accelerating again, the needle would go up clockwise but stopped by the stopper at 0mph, (like if it had made a complete circle). So definitely the speedometer then!!
Regarding the removal of the cluster, does anyone have any experience on that? I know I have to remove the center console, then the bazel...but how can I remove the center bazel where the radio is at?
Again, thanks guys for the responses.
Hondaboy9602 02-19-2009, 05:36 PM If a remember correctly from when I had my 96 to remove the trim around the radio there are two screws behind where the shifter is that are hidden under the center console. Once you remove the center console you should see them. I also believe there is a third screw behind the ash tray. The ash tray pulls out and the screw should be behind it.
