View Full Version : 8th gen vs 7th gen
accord_fan4life 02-21-2009, 04:34 PM Everyone, perhaps this has already been discussed and someone can point me to the "already created thread" but whats the take when you compare the 7th gen and 8th gen?
I own a '03 accord EX-L. Believe me, I love Honda. I love my accord. However, I have to admit some of the issues with the 03 accord drive me up the wall (terrible brakes, terrible rotors, dead Radio, Rusted window pillar, etc etc) The general consensus is that the 7th gen accord was a big step down for Honda. Some would say GM cars had better quality then the 7th gen Accords...
The ultimate question: Does the 8th gen bring Honda back to respectability in terms of Quality and reliability...or is it to early to tell?

Too early to tell....:dunno:
zexen 02-21-2009, 07:53 PM Mechanically, it's going to be about the same...
Comparatively with everything in context, too early too tell. It'd probably be another model year until anything major starts to show a lot better.
dxerg3770 02-21-2009, 08:32 PM my car is at 9k miles now. It started to develop rattles in the rear and passenger side at about 8k miles. And from other posters here that complain about rattles in pretty much everywhere. I'm not so sure about the build quality. My previous car, 00 camry was rattle and mechanical problem free for 110k miles.
civic88hb 02-22-2009, 06:17 AM That's crazy my fiance has an 03 ex-l v6 coupe and she's been having the same problems you just talked about she just got new brakes and rotors. Also her window pillar is all messed up and the want like 50 bucks or so for a new one. Her radio is fine though not like mine but decent. I have about 20,000 on my 08 v6 coupe and haven't had any major problems my gas lid kept getting stcuk that's about it
HADriver06 02-22-2009, 06:37 AM I have a 7th Gen too and absolutely love my car! I do agree with you on the brakes and rotors though... I only have 32k miles and already on second pair of front pads and already had the rotors serviced. And no, I'm not an aggresive driver either(for the most part, at least...).
Can't comment about the 8th Gen since I don't own it. From what I've seen it's probably a better car overall than the 7th Gen though (which is not surprising).
frainc 02-22-2009, 06:58 AM Had a 2006 Accord and no problems and now an 08 with zero problems (now have 18,000 miles).
native.texan 02-22-2009, 06:59 AM Only owned an 08, but at 13K, have had no issues save for one faulty read on the TPMS.
mike.

......looking at info from CU, Senor Karesh et al (plus my 3+ year ownership), indicating the 7th Gen as a step down is somewhat puzzling to this sailor.
Opinions come and go, but the hard data (2003 brake/radio systems are the exception) would indicate the 7th Gen as a reliable choice.
Honestly - with a 14.5 QM, really outstanding (HWY) fuel numbers and the precise engineering historically inherent to the sub-species, - what we appear to have here (IMHO now) is a bad call.
best, ez..
newbie2honda 02-22-2009, 07:40 AM Can't speak for 7th-gen but I have an 8th gen with 12000 on it with no problems whatsoever. So far this car has been perfect!

I'm not sure where that consensus view came from, but I can't say that I (or likely many here) would agree with it. The late model GM vehicles I've owned have been absolute disasters. My Accord, on the other hand, has provided 106,000 miles of trouble-free driving, and it's showing no signs of changing that trend. It's smooth, relatively quiet, reliable, and has gotten up to 38MPG on highway trips before. As far as I'm concerned, it's nearly the perfect car for me. GM's made some pretty significant strides in reliability, but they're still not up to Honda standards.
namegoeshere 02-23-2009, 10:57 PM If you do a bit of searching, you'll see that people here have complained about bad brakes/rotors, dead radio, rattles, poor paint, etc. on their 8th gen Accords.
Perhaps it's the bugs of a car being in the first year run of a new generation.
honda761 02-23-2009, 11:13 PM Just turned 50k last week
Here are the problems.
1. 2 burned out headlights.
2. Nothing
3. Nothing.
4. Nothing.
Never had a car before that took me to 50k new that didnt require a warranty repair.
Yeah, it can stand to be quieter on the road and thats all I can ask for.
ItsaHonda 02-24-2009, 01:44 PM I'm not sure where that consensus view came from, but I can't say that I (or likely many here) would agree with it.>>>
No kidding... that one left me scratching my head. Then again, I've owned quite a few vehicles that Consumer Reports warned everyone to run far, far away from... yet they always did good by me (even the GM products). I bought the 05 Blazer with 29k miles and it's now about to turn 60k miles, needing nothing more than a battery (oh, and a set of tires). It has been towing a trailer 1,000 miles a week for the last 20k miles or so.
I've owned two 7th gen Accords, the 06 had some minor issues (mostly with interior trim), but the 07 has been great... and has logged 42,000 miles in two years. I've never had a single issue with the engines or transmissions in either vehicle... and am not anticipating any for a very loong time.
08coupex 02-24-2009, 02:54 PM Im expecting my 08 coupe to be relativley problem free,I just do highway driving. Just traded in a 05 Tahoe and had zero problems at 60k miles. The only thing done to the truck was inspections. Same with my F150 05 but that only has 40k but we take that 4 wheeling and never had an issue.
npolite 02-24-2009, 03:00 PM While you can search for common problems here are some from my sister's 08. She purchased it 2 weeks after the release of the 08's and has close to 30k miles on it.
1) Replaced carpeting after 6 months of use. While they replaced it, caused the driver's seat to squeal. I know people could blame the heels but the carpet was way cheaper in her Elantra and that carpet lasted almost 10 years without any problem.
2) Rear pads wore out at 15k miles.
3) Steering wheel makes a clicking sound when it gets cold
4) Door handle sticking
5) Rear brakes sequel
6) Sticky gas door release
And more of a complaint --
Can't see very well out the rear driver side window. Headrests are too big.
The headlights dim way too much over any of the previous Accords we have owned.
The A/C cycles on very frequently too. Every 20 seconds. According to Honda this is normal.
Those are the ones off the top of my head.
My cousin has an 06 and I feel that's a better car than the 08.
staro0989 02-24-2009, 03:15 PM We own both the 7th gen accord and the 8th gen, so I can pretty much do a side by side comparison. Our 06 has been completely trouble free since we bought it new and has about 33,000 miles on it. The front and rear rotors had the common problem but were taken care of from the dealer free of charge. It has one or two rattles but nothing major at all. We have only done oil and filter changes and soon we're going to change the tranny fluid.
The 8th gen which we got a little over two weeks ago has 1000 miles so it is a bit to early to tell for problems lying ahead but I'm sure it will be just as trouble free. I do already have a couple of rattles and creaks though, but thats nothing major to me at all, but only time will tell. If your looking for the nimbleness of the 7th gen, the 8th gen has lost some of that but its still not too bad by any means. Handling seems to be pretty decent also. The materials are very subjective, but certains are better on the 8th gen and some are better on the 7th gen. If your looking for alot of cup holders like the 7th gen, the 8th gen has lost the ones in the door. lol
So overall I think they are about even, you get something but you also lose something.
