View Full Version : What's Pursuit Trak?
el Vato 02-22-2009, 07:02 PM Yesterday I took pride in changing the oil in the car. I was quite surprised to see a jacking point in front of the car. All went as planned. I then decided to finally hardwire my V1 radar. As I was looking under the steering column where the fuse box is, I noticed a zip tied harness. The harness was attached to a small black box that said, "Pursuit Trak". This small box had another wire connected to it, a cable wire like the ones from cables for TV. Is this box for GPS tracking if the car had Nav? My 08' V6 sedan didn't come with Nav.
Aviography 02-22-2009, 07:06 PM Do you have a lo-jack device installed?
el Vato 02-22-2009, 07:34 PM No lo-jack.
elp_jc 02-22-2009, 09:01 PM Used car perhaps?
is your girl checkin you? haha
el Vato 02-22-2009, 09:47 PM I bought my Accord new. If my girl was checkin' me, she's doing a good job because we just celebrated our 11th wedding anniversary on Saturday. =)
The Pursuit Trak does look aftermarket installed, possibly at port. I saw how it was wire tapped onto other wires. It had a red and green light both lit. The power from the red wire it was tapped into had continous power. I assume it's connected to the roof mounted antenna. I think I'm going to disconnect the one cable wire to avoid being tracked.
Osiris_x11 02-22-2009, 09:52 PM Just another way 'da man is keepin' an eye on YOU! :D
Accourse 02-23-2009, 12:48 AM I think it's tied in with your car alarm. Audiovox seems to be the manufacturer, at least what I could glean from the web.
Aviography 02-23-2009, 12:56 AM I bought my Accord new.
Then you should go back to the dealership and ask them what/how the heck is an unauthorized device installed on your brand-new car without your knowledge?
TempesTrip 02-23-2009, 01:30 AM that's what i would do... would definitley concern me.
glen e 02-23-2009, 01:36 AM Lot/demo theft is a real concern for many dealers. Perhaps the dealer is putting it on all cars to reduce his theft rate. I know two dealers that put it on all of their cars here in Florida. It probably should have come off when prepped for delivery..
Dreamacre 02-23-2009, 03:15 AM Do you have the Navi?
If so, it could be part of the GPS for the map system, so the GPS knows where you are.
:dunno:
mwmcginn 02-23-2009, 04:51 AM Not really sure, but there were some dealers installing a device on cars that if you missed payments, they could remotely track or shut down a car. I didnt find anything like that for "Pursuit Trak" though.
Did you buy your car new?
Klutch 02-23-2009, 06:00 AM Sounds like the lot theft device to me. Sounds like an ass chewin might be coming for someone not taking it out.
No offense but was it bought from a low budget we finance anyone type of places? Might very well be a repo helper for them.
Dreamacre 02-23-2009, 06:29 AM Found this from doing a search:
http://www.fi-magazine.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2138
"We had a company demo a similar product called pursuit trak. Very slick vehicle tracking system that allows the user to check where their vehicle is at any time, to see where it has been, and even notify you if the car exceeds a predetermined speed or leaves a specified area.
Powers that be thought it should go to our gizmo store where it has died. We thought it would be a great product to add to our menu and could easily be used to build value in and Etch. Cost is about the same as lojack."
I would get it the heck out of my car. :paranoid:
Klutch 02-23-2009, 06:33 AM Actually, the more that I think about it I bet it was a previous rental car and it belongs/belonged to the rental company. Did it have a rental history?

I bought my Accord new.
Take it back to the dealer and ask them what it is for and why it's still powered if it was supposed to be deactivated. If you got a free GPS locator, you should probably know who's keeping tabs on it.
MSchu 02-23-2009, 08:05 AM One of my guys says it is most likely part of the compass system... the Compass control unit. He was also asking about whether or not the car had an aftermarket alarm tracking system
el Vato 02-23-2009, 08:11 AM I bought my Accord new from a Honda dealer with 5-7 miles on the odometer. It was not a demo or rental car before I bought it. I will disconnect the antenna connection to it and then the power if it doesn't cause any problems. Better yet, I will take a pic tonight and post it.
G-Force 02-23-2009, 08:30 AM Maybe someone else bought the car before you, ordered the Pursuit Trak as a dealer option and then backed out of the deal.
If it was to be removed before during PDI, I would expect them to install it in an easier location to access and can't see them spending that much $$ per new car on the lot anyway.
One of my guys says it is most likely part of the compass system... the Compass control unit. He was also asking about whether or not the car had an aftermarket alarm tracking system
No, the compass and gps unit are both under the rear deck of the vehicle
mhadden 02-23-2009, 09:32 AM I think it's tied in with your car alarm. Audiovox seems to be the manufacturer, at least what I could glean from the web.If he has an alarm. But yes, Audiovox made the unit, but its old as dirt (well, compared to technology). Here's what I swiped from the web:
In 1998 Audiovox introduced Pursuit Vehicle Trak, a system designed to allow motorists without even a mobile phone to communicate with an emergency help center. It automatically monitored a car whenever it moved more than 1,000 feet from where it had been parked and could slow down and shut off the car if it had been stolen. Other systems features would start the car, warm the engine, and unlock the doors. Also that year, Audiovox introduced a cellular phone using a built in Global Positioning System (GPS) to pinpoint a caller's location.
MSchu 02-23-2009, 09:57 AM No, the compass and gps unit are both under the rear deck of the vehicle
There is not a Compass control unit in that position... drivers side steering column?

Wow. It is quite old. Sounds like first generation On-Star.

If you have the premium audio with no nav, you have a compass module under the rear deck. If you have the nav, you have a compass and gyro in the nav unit, also under the rear deck.
andysinnh 02-23-2009, 12:52 PM Looks like it's a newly-marketed "Lo-Jack" style service - from their web site at http://mobile.audiovox.com/audiovox/AudiovoxController.do?ACTION_TYPE_ID=ACTION_TYPE_C ATEGORY&ACTION_CATEGORY_ID=STR_CATEGORY_VEHICLE_TRACKING - it says:
Pursuitrak is now available at new car dealers, nationwide and at retailers. Pursuitrak automatically notifies you when your vehicle has been stolen and lets you track the vehicle on your own computer. And for the first time, consumers are provided with basic GPS call-in, stolen and car-jacking vehicle recovery support from a National Operations Center that provides law enforcement recovery assistance.
el Vato 02-23-2009, 07:01 PM Sorry guys....pics of the box and its location will have to wait until tomorrow. Wife is sick and the little ones need an entertainer.
andysinnh 02-23-2009, 07:11 PM And another link - the article at the end talks about the ability to have this installed at the port of arrival - so that may have been where it got put on the system - or maybe the vehicle was traded from another dealer who did. http://www.dealerscope.com/article/audiovox-receives-oe-awards-new-technology-more-come-67492_1.html But in any case, this sounds like it might be a service like LoJack that may have already been paid for...
And if you want to find more - do a google search of "pursuitrak" - it's a single word per the audiovox info...

dexterdog 02-23-2009, 07:22 PM They have this new thing on the interwebs. It's called Google.

lldsandsll 02-23-2009, 07:44 PM what's an interweb?

uh.. most folks wouldn't have found driveaccord.net without google in the first place - the real issue here was searching for the correct name.

You're right. I had to go to page two when I did a search. If the OP had listed the name of the product correctly I bet it would of came up on the first page.
el Vato 02-24-2009, 11:44 AM I had found some info on it even when it was misspelled. My main reason for posting this was to share my experience. Also, to maybe caution my fellow 8th Gen owners that there might be a slight chance this could be on your car too.
You guys are too literal sometimes. :beatnik:
AznX TL 02-24-2009, 12:53 PM hmm i wonder if my car has it, it would save me some money on insurance......

The title of the thread is, "What's Pursuit Trak?" So we as a collective group helped answer your question. No harm no foul. You did provide info on your personal experience of changing the oil but that was not what the thread title implied.
I commend you on your oil changing success and wish you well on determining what that PursuiTrak will do for you.
el Vato 02-24-2009, 08:37 PM Hey Dexterdog, it was meant as a catchy phrase. ;)
Thanks to all of you for helping out with my request.
