Just got myself a Beltronics RX65, but I don't want a wire dangling. I saw some posts talking about hard wiring a radar detector, but I did not see any instructions. I have an LX-P sedan so it's unlikely I will have a harness to tap into and I am really nervous about tearing the the pillars apart. Doe anyone have any details on this?

well first off Where do you want to mount it?
2ndly, im guessing you want to turn it off automatically when you turn the car off... ( You never know...)

3rd Is this going to be a permanant mount....
The more data you can feed the better the response will be as to what and how to do..... :)

JamieJam1AIM,
Tips from the master, I am not worthy. :notworthy LOL
To answer your questions:

First off Where do you want to mount it? Windshield.
You want to turn it off automatically when you turn the car off... ( You never know...) Yes
Is this going to be a permanant mount.... No will use suction cup and quick disconect (Looks like RJ jack)

Again, this is an LX-P some no harness is readily available (That I'm aware of)

Thanks again.

Just cut the cigarette lighter adapter off and tap into the Accessory wire on the stereo wiring harness.

I wouldnt quite cut it off But I would tap into it if possible If youre remotely handy, solder it and shrink tub, or tape it... better to do it right the first time than have to go back again.... You can pull the weatherstrip and go behind the pillar up to the roof then across to wherever you plan to mount it.... the other option is if you have the dome lights up top by the sunglass holder tap the wires there. but in this case youll need to manually turn it off cuse otherwise dead batteryville.... :(

I was thinking of doing it that way and rather than cutting the coiled cigarette lighter plug, they offer a non-coiled cord for direct wiring which might be better. Because it's the LX-P, I don't have a sunroof, just a map light, do you know what the procedure is to get access to the wires?

Thanks

i picked up my hardwire kit at circuit city. you can get the direct power cord online on the beltronics website

https://www.beltronics.com/store/straight-cords/

there is even one with the cigarette adapter still but it has 12 feet so you could just get creative and run it down the pillar and under the dash to the lighter. my direct power cord even has a remote mute button that is right next to my steering wheel so i dont have to reach up to mute it. to run the wire in the pillar i didnt disassemble it i used a thin flathead screw driver and tucked it in. it was pretty simple just be carefull not to cut through the wire. hopefully ill be buying a valentine1 soon though:notworthy

i mounted mine right under my rearview mirror and ran the cord accross the driver side down the pillar and used an ad a circuit thing from pepboys and hit my fuse box on my driver side. all i do is remove the detector from the suction cups and unplug and it usually put it in my glove box when i park

when i used to have the cord hanging down the middle of my windshield cops would always try to tell me obstruction of vision and now they dont say anything about it:thmsup:

Hopefully everyone on this thread has been helpful but shoot me a PM if you need further help. Basically your best bet is to get some type of hardwire kit (it will probably have an additional fuse just in case) but all you are doing is finding a hot wire (a power that goes on and off with the car is probably what would be best for you). Then you are going to tap into that wire with the power wire from your hardwire (or just the wire if you were to cut your plug) and then use the other wire (ground) to attached to some screw that is metal).

Back when I had a civic someone on 8thcivic.com wired their radar to the map light. Its still 12V and the radar doesn't draw too much current. The only issue is you have to manually turn off the radar every time you shut the car off. And make sure you don't wire the radar to the "door open" power wire

When you un it down the a pillar remember there IS AN AIRBAG!!!!! the poster with the 6th gen doesnt have bags in the a pillar is memory serves correct...
do as he said, take it across the windshield but! Go down the outerside of the pillar so you can tuck it in Completely.. once done On the side of the dash pop the black side panel off and fee the wire in and go from there.... No ugly wires showing at the bottom of the pillar......... Sorry But, im anal retentive like that. Go stealth or hire someone to do it...

I feel the same way about my car, I don't want it to look slapped together. Will take your advice.

Thanks,

The A-pilar covers are actually very easy to take off and can be done without causing any problems to the airbag system. The plastic tab that says "Airbag" on it is actually a two stage clip similar to the small ones that hold the the little panel under the dash on the center console, only bigger. With a small flat head screwdriver, you simply pull up on the tab (I cycled from side to side) and the tab will pull outward. Once out enough to where you can get your fingers on it, you can simply pull it along with the second stage clip straight out. Now, with the door rubber molding pulled off of the panel, you can pull it straight towards the center of the car, then up and away from the dash. Now you have plenty of room to route the wires as you need them. To put back on, just reverse the removal process. I've done this a couple of times to run wires up to the rear view mirror for a "Video" mirror that I had. Ended up removing it because I didn't like it and it was just as easy the second time as the first. I didn't disconnect any power source to do this, however if you are paranoid about it, you can disconnect the battery and wait about 20-30 minutes for the car to loose any reserve power and then do it. Since I wasn't "Disconnecting" any wires to the airbag system and I wasn't actually touching the airbag system under the cover, I didn't worry about this. Easier and much cleaner looking afterwards in my opinion, but to each their own.

The instructions from Honda say to hit the A Pillar with a towel wraped rubber mallet, you're saying I don't have to?

Oh now wait, just notice that you had an 8th gen. All the others I was seeing posting and the pictures were 7th and even 6th. Haven't really looked at the 8th gen ones. Not sure if they are the same or not. If they are, I know I didn't need any kind of hammer.

Me again, got the RX 65 on Saturday and it works great, I especialy like the mute button on the smart cord. I saw this rearview mirror mount for the unit. http://www.countryjoycrafts.com/350Z/escortmount.htm and I wondered if anyone has tried it?

Keith, you don't have to remove the A-piller cover. You can tuck the wire behind it by pushing it in with a butterknife. I did that with mine and ran it behind the door's weatherstripping down to the fuse box. I used a fuse tap from autozone to wire it to the wiper fuse (#4).

i would stick to the suction cups provided i havent had a problem with them. the only time they have fallen off the windshield is when they froze when it was below zero. i would think the detector would move a little on that mount when driving

Great I ordered a direct wire on ebay that has a mute button and comes with a fuse tap. Thanks :notworthy
