View Full Version : 225/45 or 235/45 on 18x8
abolt12 03-04-2009, 07:55 PM okay so one last question about tires. so im getting OZ ultraleggers that are 18x8. which kuhmos should i get: 225/45/18 or 235/45/18. im just wondering cause i dont want the tire to the whole cone over the edge of the rim thing if i get the 235s so any advice would be awesome
Chris_88 03-04-2009, 09:10 PM I'm on 225/45/18 kumhos right now and they are fine. Going 235 wouldn't make much of a difference in the way the tire looks. You cant go wrong either way.
abolt12 03-05-2009, 06:01 AM Cool. What rims are u rockin?
krulik 03-05-2009, 06:14 AM I would go with 235s. Wider is definitely better . More contact area with the ground. You can even put a 245 on that rim, but that's pushing it and I wouldn't bother (although I certainly would if Hondas were RWD).
In the next two weeks I plan to have a set of 235/40/18 mounted on 18x8 rims, so I've been crunching these numbers for a while. The decision for me was really 235 or 245. Because of front wheel drive, 235 won. But I'd never even consider 225. Hell, I wouldn't bother upgrading the wheels at all if I was slapping on 225s.
abolt12 03-05-2009, 06:23 AM Haha true. Ya the only thing that was making me want to put 225/45 instead of 235/45 was that I wasn't sure if the 235 would start to cup around the lip of the wheel because itwas too wide for the rim. But many prime have assured me
It won't so I think thats what ill do. Besides wider is better haha. Thanks for the advice. Ill try and post some pics once I get em
lebomb 03-05-2009, 07:25 AM Its up to you............... I think the 225s look fine on my Accord. Hell thats two sizes up from stock. :dunno:
abolt12 03-05-2009, 08:22 AM Yeah I no. I think I'm gonna get the235 and if there not that great then next time ill no to go 225. But anyways thanks for all the advice and questioon answering. It's my fisrt wheel and I wanted to get it right. Ill be sure to post pics once I get the setup

Awesome!!! Happy for ya my man. Post those pics once you are done.
Chris_88 03-05-2009, 11:53 AM Cool. What rims are u rockin?
Enkei RPM2s, I like MESH wheels
newhondaguy 03-05-2009, 11:56 AM i just ordered 225/40/19 hancook tires. My car is lowered though. people say that 235's will rub...

I like em as well, they are just hard to clean. I went with 5 spokes the second time around.
CanadianBacon 03-05-2009, 02:06 PM Im running 235's on my......no bubble tire look!! They feel great =)
Greg Rocks 03-05-2009, 04:39 PM CanadianBacon i really like those HFPs on the accord. im not a big fan of them on the civic but im liking the bronze on bronze look. are those 17 or 18"?
CanadianBacon 03-06-2009, 04:09 AM They Are 235/45/18, running michelin pilots!! I threw the rims and tires on quickly last month to see if they fit nice!
I'll post better pics this spring when i put them back on!
Thanks for the compliment
abolt12 03-06-2009, 05:44 AM Ya those look really clean and mice. Be sure to post more pics soon
PanzerLeader 03-06-2009, 09:55 AM HFP RIMS 18" Correct? Let us know what you think of the steering/handling changes and dry/wet traction. Also noise/ride quality/ changes. I am thinking of the Acura TLS 17" to replace stock OEM Honda to go to the 235 tire. But still considering the HFP as an option.
PanzerLeader 03-06-2009, 09:57 AM BTW Tire Rack does not suggest running the 235/45R17 on the Honda Accord 17" Rim.
PanzerLeader 03-06-2009, 03:07 PM Another quick question, did the steering effort needed to turn the steering wheel increase with the 18" HFP wheels. Meaning did you need to exert more effort? Also, with the 18" wheels, was the car more stable in cross winds and buffeting by 18 wheelers?
CanadianBacon 03-06-2009, 04:17 PM I only had them on for a few km's. I tried them quickly to see if there was any rubbing issues, which was none at all!
I'll be able to give you more info in spring when i put them back on for good ;)
PanzerLeader 03-06-2009, 07:10 PM Thanks, I look forward to the update. You can see what I have done to the suspension. Wondering what the tire and wheel changes would add or subtract from the setup. Here in the marshlands and subtropics, rains can be heavy.

:lmao: ................ never heard these questions before.
No is the answer to both questions.
PanzerLeader 03-07-2009, 03:39 PM lebomb, Depending on the size tire and design, the traction of the tires will improve. The more grip, the less contact lost, hence better stability. Likewise, due to more surface contact, sometimes results in more resistence of the tire with the surface. The result can be that there is a feeling of less power assist with the steering. So what exactly have you experienced with the wider tires?

I dont drive aggressive at all........so I havent really noticed much difference, besides the ride being very smooth at speeds over 70.
PanzerLeader 03-08-2009, 04:56 PM Thanks for info.
DougNuts 08-06-2009, 05:38 AM I know this is old, picked it up on a google search. I just wanted to add that an 8" wide wheel will easily support a 245 width tire without it looking too fat. That's what size tire the mid-late '90s Mustangs had on a 17x8" wheel from the factory. I ran 275s on an 8" wide wheel on the rear of my Mustang.
What's my point? On an 8" wide wheel on an Accord, I would go with 235 width, every time. 225 wouldn't be an option unless you like your tire to look a little stretched.

The potential problem with a 245 tire is not the 8" wide rim but rubbing issues with the wheel well and suspension components.
Especially if you lowered the car or have aftermarket suspension components.

i plan on getting a set of 18in. wheels for my car by the next time it needs new tires (it'll be a while since i just got new tires). my car is lowered (see siggy), and i'm curious to know what is the WIDEST tire i can go with on my ride? I want the widest tire for maximum contact performance.
from reading around here and various other threads, i'm getting the impression that my car can easily do 225/45/18, but, can i put in a 235 tire in there and not rub? a 245 tire seems like a no-go, but i'm curious about that size as well :). Also, how wide would the rim have to be for all these different sizes, 7.5in. or 8in. wide?
then the height of the tire also affects the width of the tire, right? like, say a 225/65/18 would be wider than a 225/45/18 tire? i know that the 65 tire would have a much taller side-wall than the 45 tire would, but i'm curious about the overall width of these two tire examples.
also, what offset would i need for my car? +45? i've read the couple of stickies here about offset, but i still do not comprehend very well how that works out aside from how it looks. where an offset closer to 0 makes the face of the wheel stick out away from the car and an offset closer to 100 makes the face of the wheel go in towards the car's suspension. i've also picked up that offset determines if the wheel is going to rub with the suspension. but, i still do not fully understand the mechanics behind the whole offset deal.
