Hi.Well my question may have been asked before directly or indirectly and may sound a little dumb. I wanted to know when to change the timing belt. when ever I get my oil changed at a private place Im always asked if I had changed my timing belt (By they way I have 67k on my 01 accord lx 4cy). I heard people say 60k most of the time and ocassionaly 80k,90k and others say the book says 105k. When I tell mechanics that the book says 105k they say,"Well do you do everything the book says like change your oil at 7500 miles ?"...I just wanted to know when to change it and when did some of you guys change it. The reason im asking is that today my friends belt for his car snapped(95 hyundai accent 60k) and I dont want to damage my engine. Thanks in advance and sorry if this is has already been discussed. Thank You again !

105K or eight years, IMO. Mine was replaced at 108K no problem. Your friends belt probably snapped due to age and maybe low quality too.

If your friend had oil leaking on the belt, I imagine that would degrade the rubber as well.
I plan on waiting until ~105k miles to change the timing belt on mine.

6 years, 90K would be what I'd do. probably be ok to 105K but is it worth taking the chance?? now would I do it at 90K if I was going sell the car soon and didn't care about the selling point of having it done?? no way. :lmao:

Did mine at 105K also, but I'll be doing the next replacement at 90K.
Thats good to know. Im probably going to inspect it on the weekend since I have nothing else to do. If its good i'll change it at 90k. Thanks again ! Take Care !

I changd the one on the festiva at 60k. The belt cost 27 bucks and that poor little car spent alot of time deep into the tach. It was a fun car to own. The ranger I drive daily got its 1st change at 92k. I wanted to do it at 80k but just kept blowing it off. I will change it at 160k,, so in about a year and a half or so. I just dont know about honda's 105k thing. If you lug one around hard.. thats hard on the belt and if your deep into the tach thats hard on them. And inspecting a timing belt does little for the comfy level if you've been around cars with timing belts on them. Ive seen belts that look like they have 30k on them at 100k strip / or break and trash a head and pistons at higher rpm and have seen them break at idle and leave you stranded. I say better safe than sorry. Im glad the new I4 has a chain. But it still will need changed around the 180k mark I bet.
good luck
