View Full Version : Rear window sunshade for 2008/09 sedans?
Accourse 03-12-2009, 07:21 PM I'm not a big fan of tinting my windows so I've been looking for a rear window sunshade for my 08 sedan, but haven't had much luck in Google, eBay, or collegehillshonda.com. I'm looking for something like similar to the common, simple front window nylon sunshade, one that springs or folds open. Not the ones with suction cups or that weird canopy that covers the entire cab from the outside. Anybody have any ideas? Much appreciated!

xJoeMama78 03-12-2009, 10:54 PM Without suction cups its going to be difficult to hold it up since you don't have visors in the rear. Are you against tinting because you don't want the reduced visibility or because of the cost or some other factor? If it's because of the reduced visibility, they make clear films that block 99% of the UV and a huge amount of the heat. On my car and truck I have 35% tint on the front and 5% on the rear windows and back window. I also have a clear film on the front windshield. The clear film does as good a job, if not better, than the darker tints at blocking the heat. I can put my hand on my dash, during the middle of an AZ summer, and not feel hardly any heat coming in through the windshield.

I should clarify: I don't want the rear window sunshade attached while I'm driving, only when I plan to leave the car parked for long periods of time like when I'm at work. Having to pry off those little suction cups would then become a small chore. GM and BMW make custom fitted rear window sunshades and I was hoping that there might be a 3rd party accessory like that for Honda. I'm considering trying one of the BMW sunshades because I think it might fit well on the Accord. I understand why many people like tinting, but the overall appearance just doesn't appeal to me. And I understand the necessity of having tinted windows in AZ, but it's not quite as necessary where I live.

I understand, my dad refuses to tint his vehicles because he doesn't like the dark look or the reduced visibility, that is why I suggested the clear tint. You can't tell it's there.

Osiris_x11 03-13-2009, 12:35 AM The 2nd gen' RL features a rear-glass mounted power sunshade. It can be retrofitted into 8th gen' Accord sedan. Total cost of parts is ~$600...

(I'm sure you can get the stuff from a totaled/salvaged '05+ RL for pennies on the dollar...)
Also, the current JDM Inspire (ie. 8th gen' USDM Accord) offers a rear-glass mounted power sunshade as well. Honda's Japan website has images of it, just use Google translator to view & navigate.
In all sense of practicality & cost, xJoeMama78's link above for that manual retractable rear-sunshade is the best bet to go w/. Though, it's too easy & convenient. We shouldn't do logical & rational things. No fun. Make it stressful & tough on yourself, pursue to aforementioned power sunshades offered by Honda/Acura... :D
(on a serious note, if you retro-fit an RL or Inspire rear power-sunshade... you da' mannn! ;)...)

Interesting... I never heard of clear tints. I might get that done to the windshield b/c I heard UVs can do a lot of damage to a car's interior
Peniole 03-13-2009, 08:58 AM hmm I just use the same type of sunshade you had pictured in your original post. They're just separated, two round pieces, fit nicely in the back (in mine there's a small ledge between the rear window and the C pillar), they overlap, and I use a small cuhsion in the middle to keep it from sagging. Simple, cheap, and take less than a minute to put up and take down.

But the two pieces are connected by a webbing in the center, so two separate pieces might work. Right now I'm using an accordion style folding sunshade, and I raise the rear headrests to prop it up.

(on a serious note, if you retro-fit an RL or Inspire rear power-sunshade... you da' mannn! ;)...)Great suggestions, but I'll probably just keep it simple, although the power sunshade is a cool idea. I really don't mind taking a few seconds to prop a sunshade against the rear window. Suction cups are annoying and leave ugly marks on the rear window that need to be cleaned off. The clear tint is a novel idea, and I may consider it sometime in the future.

TXACCORD 03-13-2009, 08:33 PM You could go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get a set of pull up blinds, probably have to trim them to fit...
Osiris_x11 03-13-2009, 10:50 PM You could go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get a set of pull up blinds, probably have to trim them to fit...And get some granite for the door side-sills, a chandelier or two for the dome/map lights, and hammock for the back-seat! :naughty:
Sorry, I couldn't resist... :D

There is an episode of top gear a couple of seasons ago that actually did that in an old Mercedes. Very comfy...

Too "Escape from New York" derivative...
Osiris_x11 03-14-2009, 03:30 PM After sleeping on this, mocking-up a remote-powered rear sunshade wouldn't be too difficult. Wireless actuators w/ a remotely located toggle are readily available. And seemingly, manually-operated mesh-like sunshades seem to be readily available as well, for various applications. Combining the two would work, w/ some creativity & diligence...
Where's XZIBIT from Pimp My Ride when you really need him! :D
There is an episode of top gear a couple of seasons ago that actually did that in an old Mercedes. Very comfy...Ha! That's awesome. Many of the exec'/top-of-the-line limited edition saloons in Japan/Korea (Roll Royce / Bentley equivalents in terms of market niche') literally look like chintzy/garish & overly ornate drawing rooms on the inside, complete w/ fold-out natural-stone/granite steps, optic-fiber interior mood lighting, natural-fiber/paper ceiling & facades, plush quilted cushions, polished metal garnishes (bronze/brass/copper), etc'. Only thing missing is the fish aquarium & jacuzzi... :naughty:
Nawww
Too "Escape from New York" derivative...lolz... funny!
RobertG 01-07-2010, 09:23 PM These guys were of some help when we needed some window shades. They are the tint pros in our area. They have stuff you dont even see if you like. With all the benifits of tinting. Worth looking into, if you have not seen the options available.
