A friend of mine has a 2005 Accord but her key has broken. The plastic that holds the metal "key" part has broken so that it is now separated from the remote fob.

She was able to get replacement key cut, but rather than paying for programming we thought we could just put the computer chip/buttons/battery piece from the broken key into the new housing with the newly cut metal "key".

However it still wont start the car. It will unlock and lock the doors of course.

Is the immobilizer transponder tied to the actual cut part of the key? Am I wrong that the guts of the key fob where the battery is held is the only thing that communicated with the car. If that is correct any ideas why it still won't work?

Thanks

The immoblizer is embedded in the plastic housing. It is in the little rectangular compartment. You will have to remove it from both key and swap. There's some glue on the chip so a little effort is required.

I'm not sure if i was clear enough in my first post so I'm attaching a picture this time.

We put the entire component on the far right (that came from the cracked but working original key) into the new housing/cut part of key. But it still won't start the car.

The only thing that is different than the original key is the metal, cut part and the plastic housing that holds everything together. (i.e. the left and middle piece) Does that make sense?

(FYI I don't have her keys with me so I'm using my CR-V key for illustration)

I just opened up my key but my camera is in the car. If you flip over the part with the metal piece of the key inside, you will see a little cut out on the right side close to the metal. The chip is in there.

Here is the picture of the key and chip.
