Scanless1:
It MIGHT be a faulty temperature gauge. To my knowledge, the entire guage cluster is built by FoMoCo (Ford Motor Company), a dubious distinction, at best.
But, have you checked your COOLING SYSTEM? (e.g., coolant level and condition, thermostat, water pump, etcetera)...
You might care to review my recent posts in the 6th Gen forum...

Only V6's. His signature says 4cyl.
If the needle shoots straight up it is an electrical issue, not a mechanical issue. If it slowly works it way up over that minute, it's probably a mechanical problem.

To All:
Fair point: It's the V6 cars that are equipped with Ford instrumentation. I reasonably suspect the four-cylinder cars come with Nippon Denso or Nippon Seiki instrumentation. I can't comment on the quality of the Ford units. But my trusty, old '86 is equipped with a Nippon Seiki gauge cluster, still working perfectly, after some 23 years.
I suspect you have a MECHANICAL problem...under the hood. Please have your cooling system inspected.
