okay so im walking out to my car today and i notice there is brown stuff splattered on my front bumper passenger side. i look to see what it is because i just cleaned the car yesterday so i was annoyed. i noticed that whatever it was dripped on to the ground and there is some liquid on the inside of my bumper. i pop the hood and see a brown liquid that almost looks like soda on the right side of the engine. i start the car and it runs normal. i took it for a drive and didnt hear any strange noises, it reved normal, and no lights came on. i think it looked like i used more gas than normal and my engine was a little hotter than normal but this could just be me being paranoid. becuase it was a brown liquid i thought it might be my oil but i checked that and the level is fine. do you guys have any ideas or should i take it somewhere to get it checked out. i took some pics 3 are more for location and the one shows the liquid.

How is the level on your P/S?

It's possible that is leaking... but if that's P/S fluid you need to get that changed asap. It's drity!

Looks like spilled coffee or soda, like someone threw out a cup or can.

Run some water on it, if it dissolves and disappears it's not oil.

Is the power steering reservoir between the marks, and is it the same color and consistency as what's on the body? Also check the brake fluid level. Those are the only two components in that area that can leak that much fluid.

Smell the stuff that's on the car, and compare it to the power steering, especially if it's low. Also compare it to the brake fluid. Again, especially if it's low.

after closer examination after i posted i thought it was power steering too. i just did an oil change two weeks ago so i thought that was too dirty to be the oil especially compared to the oil on the dipstick. i checked the power steering level and its low just barely over the min mark. when i smelled the two they were definitely the same. i took it the local honda shop and just got lucky that a mechanic was there. we determined it was definitely power steering fluid and the way that it came out of the front of the bumper it could have been the pump that backed up and overfilled the reservoir. i left it there over night and they will work on it tomorrow morning. $30 to determine the problem and then however much to repair. crossing my fingers its just a hose and not the pump. thanks guys you two were both right. ill post tomorrow when the cause is determined.

well it spent all day at a honda shop and they havent determined the cause yet. they said its something they dont see very often and might be related to the pump. they said once they cleaned the engine bay and took it for a drive there wasnt additional leakage?? who knows but im a little worried. they found some leakage back by the transmission too. hopefully its not the dreaded tranny death i seriously doubt it is considering where the fluid was inside of the engine and i was able to drive the car without an issue shifting. they are going to look at it more tomorrow hopefully this isnt going to be too expensive or serious.

ive seen some motor mounts put out that kind of liquid anyone know if that could be a possible cause?

any ideas guys?

I highly doubt it's a trans issue.
That fluid up on the right frame rail can't really get from the trans to there without it getting everywhere else.

I am guessing that you are having a steering rack issue, it's probably leaking and air is getting in the system and it's burping out of the p/s reservoir onto the frame rail.

I'd need to see detailed pictures of the car near the steering rack.

im thinking its gonna be the rack too =( it sucks that things like this happen. how much do you think i am looking at if it is the rack

well it spent another day at the shop and they were unable to determine the cause. they replaced the power steering fluid and took it for drives both days and saw no additional leakage. my guess now is a malfunctioning pump that backed up and flooded the reservoir for some reason. i dont like not knowing what caused the isssue but honda wants $80 to diagnose and i could just end up where i am right now not knowing. i just have to monitor it and hope it doesnt fail while im driving.

do you guys know what it would just malfunction randomly and not have additional leakage?

The only thing I can think of is fluid backed up out of the rack and into the reservoir. It's uncommon for them to do that. Did you recently turn the wheels with the car shut off?

I'd keep an eye on it. Racks don't come cheap for these cars, so keep your fingers crossed.

yeah i know they are veryy expensive. thats what they asked its possible that i may have bumped the wheel but to my knowledge i didnt turn the wheel at all when the car was off
