Hi,

I'm new to the forums here and I was curious to get some feedback from those who have more experience in the Honda world. I am looking at a '98 Accord with automatic transmission and 138k miles that I was recently given. I was told it has a transmission problem. Basically the car will simply stall out but restart and then drive fine again. It only happens very infrequently and more likely at higher speeds (above 45 generally).

I've done some reading and found that there is an ignition switch recall and that the automatic is somewhat trouble prone. Looked and supposedly all recalls have been done. The symptoms sound too much like the ignition switch recall symptoms I've seen though. Has anyone experienced a problem with the transmission that is similar in nature to this?

I was thinking I should start by reading the codes to see what's up. The Maintenance Required light is on, but my understanding is this is a mileage triggered "idiot light", correct?

Any thoughts? :)

Have you had the battery tested? My Civic used to do the same thing when the cheapie Kragens battery I bought got over three years old.

Good point. Could just be a loose terminal, too.

Correct. Reset this by holding down the tripometer "button", turn the key to the on position while still holding down the tripometer. Continue to hold for 10-15 seconds (I hold it until the dash lights stop flashing) and then release it. Turn the key to off and then on again and it should be reset.

try to find out if youve had the ignition recall done. that would cause the car to just shut off.

get the VIN and sign up. Check recalls.

All the recalls say "Fixed" yet it seems like the symptoms are exactly the same as the recall failure ones... Has anyone had a recalled car experience the same issues again? How about one that wasn't done correctly?

A friend of mine has a 1999 or 2000, and he has needed several ign switches before the problem went a way...
