Yokohama Avid V4 225/55/16 - 2003 EX-V6

Hi Folks,
Thinking about replacing the 205/60-16 Michelins with 225/55-60 Yokohama Avid V4. Thoughts about tire performance, and fit of this slight upsize to the stock sedan rims (which I was surprised to find are made by Enkei) are appreciated. We get a little snow here (Minnesota :D ), but they seem to have an OK snow rating.

Bought via internet and shipped to my regular installer, but despite several attempts over the course of a l-o-n-g week to balance them, the vibration would not stop - - until we put Symmetry tires on. First impressions are lasting and Yokahama's are not for me.
I've never been unhappy with Michelin and really like the set of Kumho now on my Corolla.

seems that your avid v4s threw a belt and essentially you got a faulty tire or two.

my recommendation goes like this

1) avon tech AS m550
2) BF goodrich traction tavs
3) yoko Avid V4s.

thats based on the fact that i have used all 3 of these tires, and im located in massachussets, where i do get sizeable amounts of snow, also care a lot for performance. so my requirements are, grip in all 3 conditions, comfort, tread life.

Can't really say much about the 225/55-60 Yokohama Avid V4 but I do have the 215/50-17 V4s as my summer tires. I have already about 3k on it right now & pretty much satisfied with the performance since I broke it in during the winter months. No problems on hydroplanning, twisty roads, high speed grip but it does tend to flatspot went parked overnight. Flatspotting goes away after driving it about 2 miles or so. It's a bit noisier than the stock michelin but performs way better. I have not driven the tires over snow but you might want to check the reviews at tirerack to see what others are saying concerning snow traction. Also check the Avon AS M550, I like it so does OwAce they seem to perform much the same as the Avid V4s but alot quieter but rather on the heavy side since my other set of tires are 225/45-18's.

Been checking the reviews at Tire rack. That led me to ask about the Avids :yes: . Nice leads on the TAV and the Avon, thanks! The 205/60 to 225/55 would only lead to a .23% error (70.16mph at indicated 70mph) should fit the stock 6.5 wide rims. It would put a bit more rubber on the road.

err...i dont know about going 225 on a 6.5 rim. i have 215 on 7 rims and i have a lot of tire sidewall protection on my rims, you dont want the tire overlapping the rim. the most i would go would be 215 on a 6.5 rim.

I run a 225/50-17 Yok Avid V4. Outperforms the stock Michelins by a long shot. I did run them in the snow a few weeks ago. They were okay while moving but not great when first starting off from a dead stop. I can't compare them to the Michelins in that respect because I never drove the Michelins in the snow. They do flat spot when the car sits overnight or when I drive back home from work at the end of the day. The flat spots are gone after a few miles of driving. That's a little annoying but it's a small price to pay for an otherwise nice tire.

How do flat spots feel when first driving, vibration, noise...etc? could you decribe it. Never had a tire do that before, and I'm thinking of getting the yoko 205/60/16 next summer, the turanza OEMs I have SUCK!!!

How do flat spots feel when first driving, vibration, noise...etc? could you decribe it. Never had a tire do that before, and I'm thinking of getting the yoko 205/60/16 next summer, the turanza OEMs I have SUCK!!!

The flat spots feel like vibrations...almost like out of balance. I should point something out...I only feel the vibrations if I travel at a speed of about 55 mph or higher during the first few miles of driving after the car has sat. I don't experience this in the mornings because I can only travel a max of 50 mph before I get to a highway (about 10 miles) where I can get to 55+ mph. However, in the afternoons when I leave work, I get directly on the highway and that's when I notice it. After a few miles, the vibs are gone. One more thing...the cold weather seems to bring this symptom out more than the warmer weather. When the weather was warmer, I barely noticed it.

To my surprise, the Yoks don't exhibit any more road noise than the Michs. In my opinion, the Yoks are actually quieter over rough concrete road surfaces as compared to the Michs. I drove over some rough concrete road surface with the Michs and I actually attributed the road noise to poor insulation...not so!!! You must also keep in mind that I now have less and stiffer sidewalls running the v-rated 225/50-17 tire and the road noise has not gotten worse. The only drawback is ride quality...not to say it is bad in my opinion, just a little tighter. The handling is night & day. I could not believe how horribly the Accord handled with the stock rims & tires even though the ride was already tight. I owned a 1995 Contour SE and it had a stiff ride as well but it handled great. I guess I should do the rear sway bar soon in order to compliment the new 17" tires...from what I have read, it is also a night & day upgrade.

The avid v4 is available in 215/55-16 which has the exact diamenter needed. The lower 55 series profile will improve the handling with less sidewall flex. That would be my choice..
