View Full Version : Ugh. Accident
EXLNavi 07-05-2005, 10:00 AM Truck grazed and dented the rear driver side door on my car this morning on my way to work.
I'll take pics later.
Estimate is approx $1800 to fix the damage.
Waiting on the police report (cop says call the pct tomorrow).
Ugh!
jintegra 07-05-2005, 10:42 AM Ouch! I guess it'll be covered by (the other guy's) insurance?
dragoncoach 07-05-2005, 10:51 AM Sorry to hear that. The main thing is you and everyone else are okay. I had a student driver change lanes into my '04 Pilot, damaging the front fender. I was pretty upset but calmed down. She was changing lanes to avoid a double parked car and panicked when she approached it. I know my Pilot is still very new and I wanted to keep it that way but what happened can be easily fixed and painted, no frame or mechanical damage. When I was younger, I would have stayed upset for a long long time. But, having lost my mom this year has put a different perspective on life and how trivial things shouldn't be important in the big picture. So, I mellowed out quite a bit and try not to let little things bother me as much.
princess 07-05-2005, 10:51 AM Seems to something in the air.... been a few ouchies over the past few weeks! Sorry to hear about this one too! :(

Well I'm waiting on the report to see who was at fault. When the cop was talking to me, he threw in "so you were passing him on the right?" and I said, "no, I was changing lanes, clearly I was in front of him, I signaled and was turning into my lane. He speeded up and hit me."
Truth is I was changing lanes to avoid a double parked car but I was in the clear and he did speed up and hit me, I guess to "punish" me for being in the right lane. I was going from right to left though.
I am hoping I am not found at fault, but if I am (knowing me I probably will be), well I'll have to decide whether I'm taking this to insurance or not. I can pay $1800 out of pocket and my deductible is $1000 so will it really be worth it to claim from insurance?
BTW, why does it take a cop a whole HOUR and a HALF to get to an accident scene after you call 911?
Oh, and no less than TEN minutes after the accident, some guy walks up to me with a card saying he represents a law firm, and if I need a lawyer to call him. Gotta love the ambulance chasers.
dragoncoach 07-05-2005, 11:10 AM I just hate double parkers! I understand if there is absolutley no space to park within a reasonable distance, and you only need to be there for a very short time, it may be okay but not on busy streets. This being said, there usually is some place to park (including pulling into driveways), people are usually too lazy to look. As for your cop question, they usually don't put a priority on traffic accidents unless someone is injured or there is property damage other than the involved vehicles.

Agreed! This is AM rush in downtown brooklyn. No place for double parking whatsoever.

I realized that, but I saw quite a few cop cars pass by, and there was even one who pulled up and said that he couldn't take the report because he's not from that precinct. He called one from the other precinct and they took a whole hour to get there. I don't understand why, usually downtown bklyn is swimming with cops. It also wasn't far from metrotech which usually has a heavy police presence.

Maybe if the accident had occured on Gold St. in front of the 84th Pct, you would have gotten help faster (or a Dunkin Donuts). :D
dragoncoach 07-05-2005, 12:03 PM I was thinking the exact same thing about the accident occuring in front of a donut shop! Great minds think alike. :D

You know thats what I thought until I found a Ohio state law the disallows insurance company from raising your rates for a no-fault accident.. Now if you have points on your license and they do a review they can raise rate but not for a no fault accident unless you have a safe driver discount then they take that away.
I1 :)
Inspector1 07-05-2005, 04:34 PM EXLNavi,
Always hate to hear about damaged Honda's :thumbsdow
Hope it all works out and you do not get penalized for someone else's stupidity
I1 :)
EXLNavi 07-06-2005, 07:42 AM Well I called the insurance co yesterday, and this morning a claims rep took some of my info. The car is going into the shop today.
EXLNavi 07-06-2005, 09:05 PM Car is in the shop now.
Got a Volvo S60 to use for the time being (rental). I'm kinda enjoying the 5 cylinders, but make no mistake, it's not my Accord. It has no navi and the controls are all bass ackwards. ARRRRRRRGH!
anysia 07-07-2005, 06:31 AM ouchie!! sorry about your car!!!! :(
huh, i1, they didnt raise my rates with my no fault "hit and run" even though i had the good driver discount and i have even started a new policy through them in the few months following the accident...
that's odd that the cop took so long to show up. but maybe it has something to do with the severity of the accident? it only took the cops a couple of minute to get to the scene of mine even though noone was injured. but i was also dealing with state police (accident was on an interstate highway), not local cops.... :dunno:
lucky you got a "decent' rental atleast.... no neon!! :lmao:

They were going to give me a Ford focus but I said nah and it was between the volvo and a dodge durango.
Since I commute 30 miles to work each day I didn't need to be paying more for gas so I took the volvo.
avexnsx 07-07-2005, 01:04 PM I've had my share of battle scars too...
1 month after i got my car, my door got "ding'd" at the staff parking lot in the hospital I work at...
then 3 weeks ago, the only day I go out for lunch @ McDs, some idiot reversed into my front bumper from the passenger side, took it for an estimate, $775 if I dun replace my headlight! WT****... and the guy who hit me, tried to take off... but luckily I saw it from far away, so I chased him down... ON FOOT!!!! hahaha... but anyway... glad we settled it, without going thru insurance,...
EXLNavi 07-13-2005, 11:32 AM Got a call today...
Car is going to be ready tomorrow.
Woohoo!!! Now I can go back to driving a real car instead of this POS volvo.

again, atleast it wasn't a neon!!!
:lmao:
so not a volvo fan after this experience, huh?? :lmao: (to think i know someone who bought an s40 over the accord........ )

Hey I am thankful it wasn't the Ford focus that they wanted to give me.
Well to be honest I enjoyed the rain sensing wipers, auto lighting dash, RDS in the radio, rear A/C and memory seat, as well as the 5 cylinder engine.
But I hated using that gawd awful jack to change the tire, (volvo just HAD to be different), wheel BOLTS instead of wheel nuts, malfunctioning fuel gauge, and lack of a proper pocket in the dash and cramped space in the rear seat.
I also missed my navi (I know volvo has navi but this one didn't), XM radio, 6 cd in dash changer, and better FE from my car.
Hey, maybe I'm bitter. I had bad experiences in my former inlaws volvo.
anysia 07-13-2005, 12:18 PM i did like the *look* of the dash in the s40. but i don't think things were very user friendly. but it looked sleek. i'm guessing the s60 is extremely similar. volvo doesn't design different cars, they just make a few of the same car in different sizes and call it a different car. :lmao:

I don't know about the S40 but it does look similar to the S80.
You're right. It's not as user friendly as the Accord. I actually had to read the manual to learn how to do everything.
The other volvo I drove was a 1990 240DL. The car was a box on wheels.
OwAce 07-13-2005, 01:06 PM wow..heres something surprising
amongst the top 3 cars id consider owning. a volvo is one of them
they go
1) current acura tl
2) 6spd accord
3) (01-05)volvo s60/s80
all 3 of these cars exhibit all the similar characteristics. the volvo surprisingly enough is sporty, if not sportier than my accordage.

so you're gonna be jealous of stevel huh? once he picks up that tl of his....
not surprising that you might describe the volvo line up as sporty (i hope you're referring to handling, not looks! :lmao: ) the guy who bought the s40 over the accord said it was more fun to drive. i don't see how one could describe any automatic as fun to drive though. :lmao: it WAS surprising to hear a volvo described that way when i heard it the first time though. :paranoid:

I may be considering getting another car and delegating the Accord to be a daily driver only. I was thinking TL or RL but I am undecided.
I may need a people mover so I might end up just scrubbing that idea and end up getting an Ody or an MDX.

Hmm interestingly enough, the S60 has decent acceleration, but the handling is "meh". Theoretically 5 cylinders is supposed to give better power than 4, but better economy than 6.
The looks have improved from the boxy, square cars they used to be. But they're not sexy like BMW or mercedes.
EXLNavi 07-14-2005, 03:03 PM Got the car back today. The work is good, but there's one spot I want them to take a look at. In the right light I can see a seam. I want to know if that can be reduced and/or eliminated.
I'm leaving for Nashville today (on the plane right now, flight delayed...) so I wanted the car back to keep it at home instead of in the shop.
Tuesday I go in to get it detailed. Or should I just do this myself? I am thinking I should just do it myself.

When I had my tranny replaced on my old 2000 v6 accord enterprise gave me the same vehicle with 250 miles, wouldn't you know I got a flat also. Called enterprise they said it would take 3 hours or go to a flat place and they will reimburse me. That jack was really a pain in the @$$, one thing about that car is what it up with the AC functions, you need a freaking PHD to learn how to use it, im into gadgets but that things was just annoying, how do you have a setting for the head, torso and legs. Thank god for honda accords, sometimes simples isn't always so bad.
dragoncoach 07-14-2005, 07:32 PM Who's paying for the detail? If it's the shop, why do it yourself? If the bodyshop repaired your car, the least they should at least do a partial if not full detail or make it really nice before you took it home. It would reflect well on them and in turn might result in some repeat (hopefully not) or referral business.

They washed it, that was pretty much it.
I'm talking about claying, buffing and waxing. They said they'll detail it when I come back as the shop had to close early yesterday.

personally i'd steer clear of body shop detailing.... they scratched up my paints and swirled it to no end.... none of that existed (on the uninrued portions of the car) when the car went to the body shop. but when it came out..... :puke:
dragoncoach 07-15-2005, 11:05 AM I suppose it's the same with everything auto related. The work is only as good as the person doing the job. If the guy polishing your car doesn't care or doesn't have enough experience the job will look like crap. Dome shops actually do a good job...just have to find one!

Well they guarantee their work, and it's guaranteed by the insurance too. So if they mess it up, they fix it.
