View Full Version : Problems Starting

So...

I'm not exactly sure what has happened within the past week or so, but my 2009 Accord seems to have suffered from some sort of problem.

Twice within the week, I put my key in the ignition and crank it up, and it just keeps starting... (as though the incorrect key was inserted) and continues to not turn over. The first time, I sat there for a good 10 seconds before giving up. Then it started the second time.

During the second instance, it just cranked for about 7-8 seconds before turning over (very poorly, and hesitantly I might add).

Anyone have any ideas?

I do have a TSX switchblade key. But it's been in operation for more than three months now without a single problem.

Let me know! I'd rather not bring it to the dealer... I can't stand those people in the service dept.

Check and make sure the security light isn't on when you try and start the car. The rough start after all that cranking is because the fuel wasn't up to pressure yet.

I have the same problem from time to time (it happened yesterday actually). My usual solution is to let go of the key once I know it isn't gonna start, let all the diagnostic lights on my dash calm down and turn off, then try again, usually works on the second try. I think the solution would be to get a larger battery with a higher CCA, it was discussed in an older forum.

If the engine is constantly cranking over, the battery is NOT the problem.

I've had this every once in a while as well. Could it be winter gas?

I've had it happen during the summer too, although far less often, so I'm not sure if it's just winter gas that's causing it :dunno:

Yea I actually had that happen to me over the weekend. I started my car fine and pulled it in the driveway to load some stuff into it. When I started my car up no more than 5 mins later it had trouble turning over. Let it sit for 15-20 secs, tried again and it started very hesitantly.

I was so confused since it had just started fine less than 5 mins ago. :screwy:

Always wait a couple of seconds while ECU does its self-diagnostic and fuel pump primes before cranking engine. Just wait until your gas gauge goes to position and crank away.

Second, watch the little green key; if it's on or flickers, ECU is not recognizing your key, so stop cranking. This happened often on my MDX. After replacing the battery, it pretty much went away, even though it was still operating the locks without diminished range. It's cheap enough to be worth trying.

And finally, try your spare key (or even the valet one) to make sure it's just the key, especially if you dropped it recently. Good luck.

Thanks everyone, will try. I dont remember dropping it. And as soon as it happened I checked for a security light, but none was lit. I never had this problem until this week. And it's happened twice... I'm so confused.

I had a hard start issue this weekend. I was washing and cleaning the interior of the car. I also had the doors open for about an hour. Got in and cranked and the starter was trying to start but I believe I had drained the battery enough to affect the starting of the car. It started but it cranked seven or eight times. The battery on the I4 is undersized for all of the electronics in the Accord especially the EX and EX-L packages. I also get a hard start in the morning when it's cold out. The battery just doesn't have enough juice to spin the starter effectively.

I will be switching to a new full size battery really soon.

I also had the extended crank and then hesitant/rough start issues. However, recently I've been holding my key in on position for 1-2 seconds then turn to crank. For over a month, no problems so far. Try it.

Same here, I have noticed it is more likely to occur on colder days (<32F). Pretty disappointing, my old Ford started without problem on coldest day we had (-29F) this winter.

The trick is to hold the accelerator to the floor while you turn the key. Only do this when the car refuses to start normally.

This is all found on page 281 of the 2009 owner's manaul. DOH!

Summa youse guys/gals never had to contend with a carbureted engine with a manual choke.

On the radio today I heard the story of a woman who called 911 because her automatic door locks wouldn't open and she was "locked in" her car.
