View Full Version : '05 I4 EXL w/ rough idle
edwilson13185 07-12-2005, 03:44 AM My Accord's idle has become quite rough, to the point that I can feel the engine shake in the steering wheel and seats at idle. When I first bought it, the engine couldn't be felt at any engine speed. I read the TSB for the '03-'04 models regarding rough engine idle--anybody know if that TSB applies to the '05 models, as well?
piturra 07-12-2005, 07:55 AM Sounds like a trip to your dealership, so they can experience the rough idle!
How many miles have you logged on your 2005???
I have over 2,540 miles (since May 6th, ... my 7 gas tank AVG = 27.7 MPG - 85% City / 15% Highway) and so far, ... runs great & the idle is still smooth!
Love my Accord!!!
Phil
Invero 07-12-2005, 08:57 AM I have the same problem with mine. I'm coming up to my 5k check up, and have a whole laundry list of things I want them to check out.

Just turned 15,000 miles (I have a 135 mile/day commute). Other than that, the infamous A-pillar squeak is the only problem I've had. I might also add that I'm only experiencing the rough idle when the engine is under load--such as when the a/c is on or the engine fan engages. This makes me think even more that the '03-'04 TSB might apply to my car.
I've got an appt to take her to the dealer this coming Tuesday, the 19th. I'll let you know what they find.
Gnome 07-13-2005, 06:15 AM Just as a data point, my I4 feels rough through the steering wheel when the AC compressor comes on while idling, but I can't really feel it in my seats. Otherwise the car is quite smooth; I'm impressed with this engine.
andysinnh 07-18-2005, 10:08 AM Ed - will be interested to hear your results from the dealer with your rough idle on the '05 2.4L I4. I've had my '05 for about 2 months now and about 3000 miles, and still have a roughness at the real low RPM level, especially when idling, in gear, with the A/C on. I tried the idle reset trick that Princess published a while ago, and while it may have helped, there's still something inherent in there.
Princess - I know the TSB on idle roughness was for the 03-04 models, but based on your "family's" experience, what other things to they address for later models with similar issues? Updated firmware downloads? Do they ever do anything with the mounts on newer cars? Give earplugs to owners? :lmao:
thanks - andy
edwilson13185 07-19-2005, 07:08 PM Just as I expected. "Could not duplicate customer concern. Idle speed and quality within spec."
It's definitely more rough now than it was when I bought it.
I also had them look at the sunroof for the third time today. It makes a loud groaning sound when I use the tilt function (and only the tilt--sliding it back it makes no noise). They say it just needs to be lubricated. But this is the third time they've lubed it and it still makes noise. I don't want to get out of warranty and then have to replace the sunroof on my dime. Any ideas as to what could be making this noise??
princess 07-20-2005, 09:49 AM You may want to try to do the idle learn proceedure....
The idle learn procedure must be done so the ECM/PCM can learn the engine idle characteristics.
Do the idle learn procedure whenever you do any of these actions:
The ECM/PCM is replaced.
The ECM/PCM is reset.
NOTE: Erasing DTCs with the HDS does not require you to do the idle learn procedure.
The throttle body is replaced or cleaned.
Procedure
Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio, rear window defogger, lights, etc.) are off.
Reset the ECM/PCM with the HDS.
Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and wait for 2 seconds.
Start the engine, and hold it at 3,000 rpm without load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, or until the engine coolant temperature reaches 194ºF (90ºC).
Let the engine idle for about 5 minutes with the throttle fully closed.
NOTE: If the radiator fan comes on, do not include its running time in the 5 minutes.
This is the only thing I found on moonroof issues.....I don't know if a "moan" is part of it though.
edwilson13185 07-25-2005, 11:57 PM UPDATE: I don't know what the dealership did, but the day after, the rough idle problem seems to have gone away. Maybe they did a software update or something and unknowingly fixed the problem. But it's definitely much better than it was.
The sunroof is still making noise intermittently. I'd called the dealership to let them know about that, and we agreed that they'd just take another look at it when I had them do my next oil change. I told them that I wasn't really concerned about the noise, as it isn't that loud, but thatI just want to make sure that it isn't something wrong with the mechanism. I said I didn't want to have to pay for a new sunroof unit out of warranty. They said that it would be a non-issue, that there is documentation that I've had trouble with it, and if I do have a problem out of warranty, Honda will fix it because it's documented.
It's great to know that there still are some companies out there that stand behind its product. I wish more companies were like that.
Thanks for the info, Princess. I appreciate your taking the time to reply. It's funny, this problem. The moonroof seal doesn't seem to be damaged, and it doesn't squeak or rattle when the roof is closed or anything like that. It sounds to me like whatever the roof pivots up on when using the tilt function is what is making the noise. In any case, it's not that big of a deal, and since Honda said they'll stand behind it no matter what, I'm not too worried about it. I'll keep you all updated, though.

Thanks for reporting back to us. It would help us all a lot if you could figure out what they did to solve your problem. Is it on the service invoice? Can you ask them the next time you talk to them?
princess 07-26-2005, 05:49 AM Always nice to hear that the meter is leaning more towards the "happy" side than the "rant" side!! :D
edwilson13185 07-30-2005, 03:36 AM To answer those who asked, the dealer said they just did the idle learn procedure. There were no software updates available for the engine.
Guess I just didn't notice that it was smoother until the next day when I pulled up to a light with the a/c on and didn't feel as much vibration. In any case, it was only at idle. At any other engine speed, this engine is smooth as silk and quieter than any four-cylinder engine I've ever sampled.
