View Full Version : trunk lip coming off
fLYaZZbRASilenO 04-16-2009, 11:34 PM So...i noticed my v6 trunk lip is starting to come off on the right side.. been taped (3m) on there since december ...any suggestions on how to make it stick better without taking it off and drilling? my friend suggested blowdrying it to heat up the tape and then clamp it down when cooling...
V1etxb0iz626 04-16-2009, 11:38 PM tape it again. My spoiler still work fine
Osiris_x11 04-17-2009, 12:14 AM Not sure of your location, but I assume it isn't the sun-belt... hence, installing anything w/ 3M VHB mounting-tape in December and/or w/o using a blow-dryer/heat-gun was not wise. The mounting-tape's adhesives require warm-to-hot ambient temperatures to properly bond/seal/cure. . .
My properly mounted lip-spoiler w/ 3M VHB mounting-tape is so secure, Chuck Norris + Superman + Incredible Hulk couldn't remove it! :D

hmm..i did blowdry it good before i put it on..it was cold here in NJ and i did it in the garage..:dunno:
TrailerPro 04-17-2009, 09:16 AM Any auto parts place should have VHB tape. If not, try your local trailer shop. We use it on aluminum panels for a screwless exterior.
If you want it to stick like it does on trailers/cars/aircrafts, you should LIGHTLY scuff both surfaces to be stuck together, then wipe it down with denatured alcohol, then apply the tape, and apply lots of pressure. Let sit for 24 hours before putting it under stress - driving.

And then the blow-dryer/heat-gun attenuate the overall bonding process (in an already warm environment) for certain spots to give uniform adhesion/curing. . .
Hotter, the better... in essence! :D
A failure on the part of the install, not a failure of materials/product. . .

soo...how do u suggest i fix the problem?
Osiris_x11 04-17-2009, 01:55 PM so can u explain in steps how to install the lip spoiler starting from having the spoiler and a roll of 3M VHB tape. thanks :notworthyHmmm... I have a few times, as well as others. Spend some time using the search (http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/search.php) (seriously dig deep into it). If nothing turns-up, hit me up...k? :)
soo...how do u suggest i fix the problem? It depends on how much 'play' you have w/ the lip-spoiler separation. If you can insert some more 3M VHB mounting-tape (some are thicker than others; try the clear acrylic VHB versions) into the separated area using tweezers & then firmly push the lip-spoiler onto the trunklid till it's bonded/cured, try that.
If no workie, then obviously remove the lip-spoiler using the same protocol used for debadging/emblem-removal (many DIY's posted). You'll need some adhesive-remover to get rid of any residue on the trunk-lid AND spoiler; then simply apply more mounting-tape & re-install... but this time do it when it's warm/hot (let the trunk-lid sit in the sun beforehand if need be), the contact surfaces are properly cleaned/prepped, and provide adequate pressure/time for the adhesive to set/bond/cure/etc' properly. . .
desiboy5291 04-17-2009, 04:30 PM alright i searched and was not succesful found alot of forums where the OP just asked if it looks, where he can buy it, and/or how much. not much on the install side i just read clean with alcohol and use 3M VHB tape and not really how. I am assuming the right way would involve using a blow dryer. Can you write up the steps im sure it wont take too long. thanks again.
Osiris_x11 04-17-2009, 10:41 PM I've not done the V6-coupe lip-spoiler install. So whatever I say, I take no responsibility for! :naughty:
- Make a D.I.Y. template as-per this (http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/showpost.php?p=396965&postcount=46) or trace around the perimeter of the hand-held/properly-placed lip-spoiler (using an extra set of hands) w/ a marker/crayon/Chinese-pencil.
- Once marks have been made on trunk-lid & spoiler is super-imposed over, alignment & orientation is acceptable/satisfactory, clean the surface w/ a non-link MF towel & alcohol (or Prep-sol pads).
- Place the 3M VHB mounting-tape along the recessed perimeter of the lip-spoiler that will be making contact w/ the trunk-lid (only 1-side of the tape should be exposed: the side facing the spoiler)
- Expose the other side of the tape which will face the trunk-lid, place the spoiler over the trunk-lid within the marks made earlier w/ the marker/crayon/Chinese-pencil.
- Apply firm & sufficient pressure along the length of the lip-spoiler. Make sure the temperature is 75°-80°+ & the trunk-lid surface it warm/hot (ie. been in the sun for a bit).
... and if you feel this is too challenging for you or beyond your abilities, have an experienced professional or another D.I.Y.'er that you may know do this for you.
G'luck!
desiboy5291 04-18-2009, 10:06 AM where is the blow dryer u mentioned earlier?
Osiris_x11 04-18-2009, 10:12 AM where is the blow dryer u mentioned earlier? In the master bedroom's bathroom... :naughty:
Added heat is only needed if the surfaces are cold/cool to begin w/, as well as if the ambient room temperature is below a certain threshold (already aforementioned as to when to do this).
If you haven't used a heat-gun/blow-dryer before for something related to this in a past project/task, now is not the time to start. Just wait till it's warm/hot, make sure the trunklid surface is also warm/hot (ie. have it in the sun for a bit). Don't compromise the install by rushing it in unfavorable conditions. Or use some hardware/fasteners along w/ the mounting-tape (involves drilling and purchase of nuts/bolts if not already included). . .
Remember: K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid). . .
TheCelt16 04-18-2009, 03:11 PM This is a little off topic but, did any of you upgrade your trunk springs when you installed this decklid?
Also how much does the 3M tape go for? Plus do you heat the surface of the car up with the heat gun, or the exposed tape itself?
PMCErnie 04-18-2009, 03:43 PM The trunk lip on my Ford Five Hundred has an innovative design. The lip has built in hooks that you can use to hang on those plastic WalMart, etc., bags. All cars should have that simple (cheap) feature for cargo management.

bravohalo 04-18-2009, 05:21 PM Did you use the grey 3m tape? Those things does not move at all
