View Full Version : Auto Tranny... oil changes and longevity
CA05LXDriver 07-15-2005, 11:59 AM Ok, so I've noticed some paranoia around auto tranny longevity, and read posts where people even change their atf more often than Honda recommends for engine oil changes!!! :paranoid:
A couple said it's due to honda not having a tranny filter...so I did some searching. Both the I4 and V6 autos indeed have a tranny filter (25450-RAY-003 for v6, 25430-PLR-003 for I4).
Have you all been replacing that too, and at what interval? I'm thinking 25k miles for mine, but wondering what the extreme-maintainers here are doing?
Thx
Oh, and by the way, the external filter design for the I4 looks to be perfect for adding a small tranny cooler.. .this would also aid longevity!!

Interesting...is there a tranny cooler on any model of accord? I wonder if 6th generations can be retrofitted to use the I4 inline filter?
jhamm5003 07-16-2005, 06:26 PM Where in that picture is the filter? This is news to me. I just drained mine this morning and I can't imagine where it is .

#4 for the I4, and #7 for the V6.
If you click on the #s in the picture it takes you to the honda part # and description.
edwilson13185 07-19-2005, 01:50 PM Here's one Accord driver without any hint of paranoia. I know a lot of people with Accords of all ages, and a guy my dad is very good friends with owns several tranny shops. Said they see a lot fewer Hondas compared to certain domestic (Chrysler and Ford, to a lesser extent GM) or Korean brands (although I guess that's not saying much :D).
Bottom line? I'd drive my Accord thousands of miles away from home, whether it had 10,000 or 100,000 on it.
stiller fan 07-19-2005, 03:03 PM plus, i am still willing to drive my accord crosscountry without any kind of reservation......
CA05LXDriver 07-25-2005, 02:21 PM Still waiting for someone to post a how-to on installing a transmission cooler. Tranny coolers are time tested and heat is the #1 enemy of an auto tranny... maybe I'll post a how-to if I get around to installing one
BenjiBoy650 07-25-2005, 02:32 PM Several people on Honduh got tranny coolers. Ask the question on there, they lost all their info when they got hacked.

Nice... definitely on my to-do list!
mbisson 08-02-2005, 06:31 AM So, what is involved in changing out the filter. Is it something that can be changed easily? :dunno: Inquiring minds want to know.

On the I4, it looks like a 2 minute job, but I'll let you know when I do it =).
Not sure how long it takes to get to on the v6, but from the graphical it looks doable... maybe 5-10 minutes????

stiller fan 08-04-2005, 10:15 AM why the :dunno: ?????
all that needs fixed to make it the roadtrip car once again is a RR wheel bearing, and the mounting manitenance needs as well (oil chg, rotate tires, tranny flush)
john_ertw 02-25-2006, 06:36 AM Has anyone changed the tranny filter in a V6 yet? From the diagram it doesn't look too difficult, but I haven't looked at the car itself yet to see how much stuff is blocking it.
Also can anyone recommend if anything else must be replaced?
It looks like item 11 (spring), 10 (the cap), 12 (hose), and 15 (bolt) can be reused for sure.
Item 7 (filter element) is what you want to change.
I'm not sure if these items should be changed or not:
22 (filter gasket), 21 (0-ring), and 24 (washer - is it a crush washer?)
I want to give this a shot when I do the fluid next time and will report back my experience, but if someone else has gone through it and can make any suggestions it would be really helpful.
john_ertw 02-25-2006, 08:28 AM I took a look at the car and it looks like it's a bit of a pain to get to the filter on the V6. It is under the air filter box and the fuse box. I found the fuse box is easy to remove with only 2 bolts (and it can then be rotated out of the way). I didn't try the air box and am not sure how many bolts hold it in place. I saw one at the front of the box near the engine but I'm guessing there is at least one other bolt. Even once the bolts are removed, I'm not sure how easy it will be to wiggle the air box away from the air supply tube.
Has anyone ever removed the air box? How easy was it?
On the plus side, I think I found a tranny fluid fill bolt. On the diagram of the tranny earlier in this post there is a bunch of stuff marked "service only". I'm not sure what that stuff is, but it is not present in my 2004 V6. Instead there is a large bolt that has "ATF" stamped on the head. It is marked checked with a red marker and I'm guess it can be used to fill the fluid which will be much easier than going through the tiny dipstick. I'm guessing the "service only" parts listed on the drawing can be used by dealers to easy tranny fluid changes. Can anyone verify that? Maybe Princess?
I wish the V6 filter was as easy as the one for the 4 banger. The early V6's are the ones known to have tranny problems after all!
princess 02-25-2006, 09:40 AM NOTE: Keep all foreign particles out of the transmission.
Bring the transmission up to normal operating temperature (the radiator fan comes on).
Park the vehicle on level ground, and turn the engine off.
Remove the drain plug (A), and drain the automatic transmission fluid (ATF).
Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer (B).
princess 02-25-2006, 09:42 AM Refill transmission with the recommended fluid into the filler hole (A) to the upper mark on the dipstick. Always use Honda ATF-Z1 Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). Using a non-Honda ATF can affect shift quality.
Automatic Transmission Fluid Capacity:
3.0 L (3.2 US qt) at change
7.0 L (7.4 US qt) at overhaul
Install the ATF filler bolt (B) with a new sealing washer (C).

Thanks for the great post. Good info here. Any idea on a good way to refill a 2003? Mine has a pipe coming up out of this place instead of a bolt. I probably would have bailed on this if I had only checked before I drained the ATF. Anyway, I used a drinking straw wraped with tape in a small funel to slowly pour the ATF into the dipstick hole. PITA. If I can't find a better way, I'll just take it to the dealer next time.
stevencrosbie 05-21-2006, 07:14 PM What you are seeing is the oil jet kit that Honda added to the 03 Accords for a small lack of lubrication problem. Keep looking at this thread, I am pretty sure Princess will have an answer for you on Monday.
Rogue Two 05-22-2006, 03:26 AM Princess - thanks for the write-up!
Do you know if this is the same for the I4 or are there some differences?
Thanks!

same here. Is there a how to on how to change this filter? Is this the round thing that's behind the batter to the left a little?
ro1017 04-23-2009, 12:38 PM guys i just got off the phone with my local honda dealer and they said the transmission filter does not require change per honda.
princess 04-23-2009, 03:48 PM L4 AT filter.....
MakingWaves 04-23-2009, 03:56 PM Our resident mechanical guru, FredSVT, changed my ATF filter/fluid last week.
I have a Gen7 I4 5A sedan with 62K miles, as listed in my signature.

Me too. I am driving to Des Moines Iowa and back the first week of June, 400 miles each way. Accord has 93,000 on it, and I have no reservation whatever.........

Per Honda, All you need is a $3000 remanufacuted transmission.
Cleankill 06-18-2009, 01:55 PM Just wondering how many Litres do i need to buy if i am replacing both tranny filter and ATF fluid? I know V6 AT takes 3L if replaces the fluid only...

Honda for you. There is a filter. You have to remove the air box (V6). It's been done. Search on here. Use my user name and tonyware. He has some pictures and video's. If the ATF fill spot has been used for the 2nd gear jet, just use the dipstick hole to fill. Yes it's slow, but the easiest in the long run.
Here, the search option is your friend.
