Aviography 05-05-2009, 05:14 PM New parts maybe, but may not be OEM parts.
I am going through a similar situation, a flying debrie creamed my front bumper, insurance company is only willing to pay for a new but aftermarket bumper since my car "is not new anymore" even though my bumper was in pristine condition, even the bodyshop selected by the insurance company said so.
The shop ordered the aftermarket bumper cover in for me to see, I did not like it, the fog light openings have a piece molded in and had to be snipped out, the grill opening looks the same but is slightly different in dimensions so my modified license plate won't fit properly, I declined the part and got them to order the OEM bumper and I'll pay the $150 difference.
The OEM part came in today, it was much better packaged where the aftermarket part was scratched in a few places right out of the bag, the grill opening and fog lights holes of the OEM bumper cover are exactly the same as the one on my car.
Sometimes it doesn't pay to go cheap.
arasheht 05-05-2009, 05:42 PM Do you have Multi-Perils coverage? If so you are entitled to OEM Honda parts! In any case, it sucks that this happened, but at least it wasn't your fault and you don't have to put anything in from your own pocket (hopefully).

I am not familiar with the "multi-perils coverage" term, so I did a search on the web, the only thing about multi-perils is that it covers more stuff in a house or place of business, nothing says "must replace with OEM parts".
Now there is the "replacement" clause in house insurance policies which entitles you to buy exactly the same thing as the one that was lost/stolen, but I have never heard of "multi-perils" term used in automotive insurance policy that entitles the owner with OEM parts.
However, the bodyshop manager did tell me I can pay additional premium to get endorsement such that only OEM parts are used in the repair, I've asked this question to the claim adjuster handling my claim but she never got back to me, perhaps she's not the right person to answer this question.
Clutch34 05-05-2009, 07:28 PM i feel ya man! saturday night i would have been KILLED by a pick up truck running a red light if my gf hadn't SOMEHOW waken up at 3 am and called me. I drive a 5 speed so I had to shift then put my hand back on the wheel before I started moving -- had my other hand not been holding the phone I don't think I'd be here writing this post.. sent me on a trip man.. :(

Oh, hmm... I don't know to be honest, I really thought that Multi-Perils was the term used for it, as it was used by nearly everyone I needed to talk to about my accident. My TL even has a sticker that says: "This Car Has Multi-Perils Coverage, Call xxx-xxx-xxxx Before Replacing Any OEM Parts!"
It's something that I bought with the total-loss insurance. It basically states that you can't put aftermarket parts in place of damaged OEM parts. Looking further into it actually, it's the insurance's name. In any case, if you happen to have that kind of insurance, use it.
pozerpholife 05-05-2009, 09:15 PM all I can say is OUCH! that sucks dude, I hate those people, and they piss me off to the nth degree!

Insurance must be different in Canada. In the United States, all insurance policies are entitled to use aftermarket parts if LKQ (Like, Kind, Quality) parts cannot be obtained. If the car is only 1-2 years old, they will use an OEM part because they haven't been on the road long enough for LKQ parts to be available, and aftermarket parts haven't really been made yet, especially on a new model design. Basically, an LKQ part is a used OEM part. LKQ is better than aftermarket. There is nothing wrong with used OEM parts because new or used, a body part needs to be prepped and painted. An LKQ part actually requires less prep time than a new part. An insurance company will pay for an OEM part if the Aftermarket part is not exactly right. The adjuster simply needs to request approval explaining why the aftermarket part isn't an exact match.
