View Full Version : 7th Gen Brake Upgrade: Suggestions
GuidoCoupeV6 05-06-2009, 03:22 PM I know this is a beaten topic and yes I should have searched but am just looking for opinions on what kind (brands) of rotor/pads are good for spirited driving ...
Today driving home some douche and his girl in an IS tried to get smart with me merging onto the highway....mind you he was in front of me, i left him, and was enjoying the vtec 5k pull so much i almost missed my exit which i why i hate my brakes ... the pedal felt very mushy, they barely grabbed, and well i just can't trust them in hard driving ...
To all those who think i was stupid for driving like this, trust me i gave that lifestyle up along time ago, but occasionally i like to open her up, today was a great day to do so and show up a lex in the process, win 1 for the accord
In the past I did OEM style drilled & slotted rotors on my GTI with EBC green stuff pads ... Worked out quiet well, they made the pedal feel alot firmer and my brakes grabbed alot harder. Also the pads lasted ridiculously long (even with 2 track days thrown in there) ...
So whats good for our Accords? Is it worth doing the whole thing versus just the front, versus just the pads etc....
capturefx 05-06-2009, 03:56 PM try willwood brake upgrade kits
capturefx 05-06-2009, 03:59 PM www.wilwood.com or go to www.tirerack.com for their brembo upgrade kits( hella expensive).

So you haven't searched?

And you street raced an IS?
It doesn't sound like you really "gave up that lifestyle a long time ago", otherwise you wouldn't be bragging about this "win 1 for the Accord" here on DA.

Accord is not a sports car, EBS green stuff has been reported to be a good pad on Accords by FredSVT, you should probably just use that since you have exprienced these pads yourself.
GuidoCoupeV6 05-06-2009, 04:13 PM Talk about being a Debbie Downer, how did this post all of sudden get so negative wow... :dunno:
Also the GTI wasn't a sports car either (maybe a sporty hatchback but no sports car) .. and yes I am well aware that the Accord is not one either ....
But who doesn't drive there V6 spiritedly at times?! :naughty:
In no way am I advertising street racing, and in no way was I street racing (i was actually on the highway when I pulled out in front of this guy trying to get stupid to show off in front of his girl). I pulled ahead and never looked back ... never dippin in and out of lanes, never did any illegal maneuvering just plain old straight shot to my next exit ... in the midst i lost the IS ... :lmao:
EBC sounds like a good choice ...
What about rotors? Wilwood is def hella expensive, as is brembo, any less expensive but just as good quality alternatives ...
wizputer 05-06-2009, 04:18 PM Quote from another thread: I recently purchased EBC Slotted/Dimpled + Akebono Street Performance to replace my fronts. It cost $250 shipped.
I've done a lot of highway driving since I've replaced them so I haven't bedded them yet, but so far they are much better than stock.
Though a note about these rotors which I've read else where, there is a "playing card against bicycle spokes" sound from the slots. I really don't notice the air noise that others also talked about. When braking it does make a "turbo like" whine (kind of). Also, when braking moderately hard to hard, the brake pedal vibrates a little (I assume due to the dimples and/or slots).
Fredsvt 05-06-2009, 04:35 PM I'd get EBC Yellowstuff, I have them, great pad. Make sure you do all 4 wheels at once.
When I get money I want to get the EBC Blackdash USR slotted rotors. Just for the fronts.
Also, make sure you have no air in the system, before you do any brake work, try bleeding them. Then come back a few thousand miles later and see if you have air again. I went through this and it had a bad ABS modulator. See the bulletin princess has posted. I think it's 07-045. Honda good-willed it for me. My car had the left rear circuit continuously getting air in it.
Since the part was changed, I've not had to bleed it any more. But I do get some shudder which I think the slotted rotors would help with.
I was curious about caliper upgrades. I'm aware of the wilwood.. but it seems possibly a tsx or tl caliper may be slightly larger, and may bolt up. Would be nice to have another "budget" option.
cobra94563 05-06-2009, 08:58 PM I would first make sure your stock system is in good shape. Get some good pads and fresh rotors, flush and check the master. It shouldn't be mushy.
I think if you can lock them up (set the ABS off) at will, with the tires you run, you don't need a brake upgrade. You won't stop any faster once the abs is on.
Different story if you are tracking the car. If you do upgrade, bigger calipers + bigger rotors + better tires , will reduce the brake fade and stop faster. I don't know if the cost if worth it to you. Good luck.
sjlee 05-06-2009, 09:00 PM Not sure what you mean by "tried to get smart with me merging onto the highway", but don't forget that the Accord is a family sedan... so the brakes aren't really meant for "spirited driving". In fact, I don't think the Accord has ever been known to have good brakes.

Totally agree with you on this.

I can confirm this. I bought the V6 6MT Sedan because I wanted a V6 6MT, but I don't like coupes. I prefer having the back doors.
The coupe V6 6MT has 11.8" rotors while the sedan only has 11.1" (like the rest of the accords) on the front.
cheap_deal 05-07-2009, 01:39 AM i got the ebc ultimaxx rotors with the ebc redstuff pads. replaced front and rear. im pretty sure they are much better than stock so far. dont expect it to give the performance of a BBK though. cost me $400 total shipped from autoanything.com
gtspaceii 05-07-2009, 04:28 AM www.wilwood.com or go to www.tirerack.com for their brembo upgrade kits( hella expensive).
Not only that, tirerack's brembo BBK is only for the fronts. For 1 grand less, you can get the Wildwood BBK from www.fastbrakes.com and it includes both front and back brakes.
...that is, if you are looking to upgrade to a BBK...
6-Speed 05-07-2009, 09:09 AM So you haven't searched?
And you street raced an IS?

Yes, I'm sure everyone here drives their 6-speed like they would drive during their driver's exam. Get real. Why would you buy a 6-speed and not have fun with it? I don't mean street racing and getting all crazy, but let's be honest, if you don't like the feeling of being pushed back in you seat, you should sell you car immediately and pick up a bus pass. I don't mean to be rude but I think everyone at one time or another has enjoyed their Honda. Isn't that the reason we have Vtec??
rszappa1 05-07-2009, 09:57 AM With that type of driving no wonder the OEM brakes wear out so fast...
gtspaceii 05-07-2009, 10:02 AM With that type of driving no wonder the OEM brakes wear out so fast...
I don't drive like 6-Speed does and my brakes still suck with 27K miles. ...you know, that whole vibrating brake issue with warped rotors...as others have said, these Honda brakes are pieces of crap... I can't wait to get myself some new pads and rotors.

I applaud someone for actually seeing my point (not the fact that i so called, street raced, which was not the case) but that I was driving my car the way I feel it should be driven at times.
I always go back to acknowledging my GTI because I had so much fun with the car (mind you it was the VR6) Daily driving it, taking it the track, it was a blast but no sports car by any means.... same with my Accord even with the differences in the two cars, the vtec is simply amazing on a wide open, straight pathed 5k throttle push, and if you own a V6 Six speed you know what I'm talking about. My concern was not to be a downer on the fact that i drove fast and had some guy in the process try to "race" me if you wanna call it that, but to see how i could fix my mushy brake feel after slowing from a fast speed, one thing the accord does not do well in my opinion.
Pads maybe a start, but def looking into rotors ... A big brake kit well i don't think i need that much grab but hey if the price was right anything is possible :naughty: but def not taking this car to the track .. i think those days are over

Nope, not me. :paranoid::paranoid::paranoid:
Shoot, there goes the radar detector again. Better back it down. :lmao:

Honda/Acura vehicles, save the S2000, NSX, and the Integra Type R, never had good brakes, not even my Integra GSR had sufficient brakes when it comes down to serious braking.
So I acknolwedge that better brakes are good to have on other Honda vehicles such as the Accords.
And yes I do drive my V6 6-spd spiritly at times, but I watch the situation and (try to) make sure the situation doesn't start to get out of control, i.e. requiring me to brake beyond the ability of both the car and my ability to do so safely, as an excellent saying goes "It's always easier to stay out of a situation, than to have to get out of a situation".
OP's post could easilty left out the "the driver of the Lexus IS was trying to show me off with his girl friend, so I floored it, engaging VTEC and won one for the Accord", then realized he had overcooked his speed when it came time to slow down for the exit.
I know given the same scenario, I would have simply asked for opinions on better brake parts to improve performance, not to extensively decribe why better brakes were needed because of some poor judegement leading to needing better brakes, but that's just me.

That's whats so great about DA forums everyone has an there opinion
Guess being able to out "pace" a Lex Is isn't everyone's cup of tea even if it means you are driving your accord in a "spirited" way when it happens...
Whats asking for advice about an upgrade w/o some kind of reason and/or story behind it ... :naughty:
Lastly the comment on poor judgment, I don't agree... whats poor judgment is judging someone based on a story written in DA ...
Next time a story is shared remember we are all here based on a common thread our cars and the passion behind it I might add...
