My Accord is going in for an oil change Thursday. It's 3 years old and I asked about the brake fluid and they quoted $70.

Now I have no idea what this should cost. They told me it's about a 1/2 hour job so $40 for labor and balance for fluid. It just seems kinda high.

I know I could do it myself, but then I am dealing with fluid, disposal and possibly special tools.

Mine was $55 but that was last year. I agree that $70 is a bit much.

I paid $85-:headbash:

The other area dealership quoted me $109.

Thanks guys.

It seems asking about $70 is kinda cheap sounding, but I was a little surprised. I don't know why they can't do it while they do the oil, but they have to do the oil, then take it to the shop, about 20 feet away - under the same roof. Heck an oil change with 21 point inspection is only $29 and that takes 'em about 30 minutes and includes the oil and filter. Plus, they give me a free car wash! So why am I paying $40 plus parts for a 30 minute brake fluid change? I am gonna ask 'em on Thursday.

I think I will just get it done anyway. I don't want to skimp on the brakes.

Why don't you do it yourself? Its very easy, just disassemble your brakes and do it as you are bleeding them until the oil is all out. Then put evevrything together and put some fluid in it.
$70 is a lot for something you can do yourself.

If you're not comfortable doing it yourself it's best to just get it done professionally, especially with something important like brakes.

By the way, that free car wash probably comes with complimentary swirls, so I would pass on that.

my question would be, do they have a special procedure to get the fluid out of the abs modulators etc. Some shops just do a regular bleed without running the abs. But yea $70 sounds about right for the job. Brake and antifreeze are def two fluids that are worth flushing on time if not a little earlier.

For 70 bucks you can get a Motive power bleeder and then just bleed them yourself every year, after the 3rd year as recommended by honda. That's what I did in my TL and I found some air bubbles in the rear I never would have known about.

BTW...local acura dealership told me $140 for the service.

Actual cost of the fluid is ~$4.00

You're lucky. I was quoted at $100 at my stealership. Was able to get it down to $85 with a coupon.

$45 at my Honda dealer, who generally isn't cheap for parts + service. OTOH, My Toyo dealer recently quoted $139 for my Sienna.

My dealer charged me $89.95 the bulk of that was labor according to the invoice.

I think we all have to remember that the dealer has bills and like every other business has to make money to stay in business.

Most dealers I have dealt with including Honda have quoted different prices for different types of work.

If you rely on the dealer to do the work then you have to get what you feel is a fair price quote.

Most dealers quote prices based on a rate book which details time to accomplish a particular job. So to do an oil change is one rate, to do a brake bleed/replace is an additional time/charge. To accomplish multiple tasks, you just add up the task time and multiply by the hourly rate. It does add up. If you do the job yourself, do not do as Walhaddi suggests. You do not drain all the fluid out but rather replace the fluid by bleeding each brake cylinder/caliper until the fluid runs clear. It helps to suck out all the old fluid out of the reseverior before replacing it with new. Then make sure it stays full all the time while bleeding the brakes. One man brake bleeders sometimes work but are expensive. It is better to utilize a wife/girlfriend/neighbor to do the pedal action.

One man bleeders always work. You just have to follow the directions
