View Full Version : tranny slip during turns...?

Perhaps this could be normal, but I've been noticing a lot lately that as I'm making a turn (without stopping) such as yielding on to another road and hit the gas as I'm still turning, my transmission will sort of give a feeling of slippage as it engages into gear. It doesn't do this any other time, and otherwise shifts fine. If I wait until I've made the complete turn and then accelerate, it will shift normally. Any ideas?

The only thing I could think of that would only affect it when turning is the differential.

That doesnt sound too good... lol. Maybe I should just keep remembering to let the car coast in the turn and wait until my wheels are facing forward before accelerating again.

If there is any relation, while I'm driving slowly (like say through a neighborhood) and I let off the gas right before the car shifts into the next gear, it will sort of 'clunk' and I can feel a slight jolt through the steering wheel. If I hit the gas again, it will downshift and accelerate. If I accelerate steadily from a stop, no problems... the tranny shifts through all the gears just fine.

I try to avoid the clunk by just going fast enough until the car goes ahead and shifts into the next gear and then I let off..

I don't remember which year & model you have, but when turning when mine is shifting at some speeds it will feel weird. It's not slipping it's just shifting. Pretty much the same feeling when you're coming up to a redlight that changes to green before you stop. I think it's the feel of 2nd to 3rd gears or something like that. Since to keep the maximum amount of control I accellerate in a turn, I'm causing it to shift.

Yeah, that sounds like what Im experiencing! I didn't think it was actually slipping, but I couldn't think of any other way to describe exactly what it was doing. It just shifts a little funny. I checked my fluid and it's full and pinkish-red in color.

BTW, car is a 1996 Accord EX w/ 4-cyl. 161k, but tranny fluid has been changed every 15-30k (started changing it every 15k when I hit 130k miles w/ Honda ATF. Had one complete flush at 100,000 miles. Most of the mileage has been long haul interstate traveling... so the drivetrain has lived the life of luxury. Thanks for the help!

Sounds like everything is fine and dandy now :) Regarding the clunk, I think its normal as the car ages. Mine has 127K and it will clunk in the lower gears when I let go of the clutch too fast or on hills.

With miles adding up,, clunks could be motor/tranny mounts....

Front wheel drive cars are quite hard on them.
