View Full Version : Pictures of early (1st and 2nd) generation Accords
fastball 05-30-2009, 06:31 AM If anyone has decent pictures of good condition Accords from the late 1970's through the mid-1980's, please post them. I like old stuff and I think it's cool to compare the Accord through the years since it has been such a steadfast car for over 30 years!
wardenr 05-30-2009, 02:12 PM Fastball:
Here is my modest attempt to grant your wish. This is my trusty '86, which I have owned going on 16 (sixteen) years. 216K miles on the car; 10K miles on the engine (rebuilt in August 2005). Me and my "Old Girl" are the love affair with no end to it!
Accordlover 05-30-2009, 02:24 PM Wardenr,
That's a 3rd Generation Accord... not 1st or 2nd... Just sayin'.
wardenr 05-30-2009, 09:59 PM Accordlover:
I fully realize your incontrovertible fact, Sir.
Just that the Gen One/Two Accords don't seem to have survived...in significant quantities. They are terribly afflicted with blown head gasket issues, serious rust problems (front fenders, rear wheel arch/quarter panels), and substandard interior materials. Add to the above a profound shortage of replacement parts.
While many parts for my Gen Three are still available from Honda, some parts (such as the water pump pulley and the driver's side door upper weather seal) are now GONE....likely forever. :(
Last year, I purchased a set of OEM (driver's side, upper and lower) seat covers for my trusty '86. Cost me some $552.00, backshipped to my dealer from Vintage Parts. They were the very LAST set of covers shown held in the entire inventory system. Thus, I consider myself an extremely PRIVILIGED person! Couple of years ago, I so happened upon a perfect water pump pulley, at an area salvage yard. Although not needing it, I picked it up for $10.00...knowing it is now discontinued. :)
I also enjoy the Gen One and Gen Two Accords, immensely. I steered both my Sister and my (now ex) Father-in-law into brand-new 1983 Accords. Being old and (perhaps) wise, I thoroughly cherish and respect them. Honda's past, it always makes me appreciate their present machinery...and hopefully I will live long enough to enjoy Honda's future!
Journey 05-31-2009, 08:55 PM Do you want ones that are totally complete and on the road or any ones?
There is a bunch of them in various shades of de-construction.
I was sitting in a brown 1979 in that junk yard and I noticed some cool things. One was the old style analog digital clock and the other was the manual power locks:D This was a feature that had a lever on the center console that you moved to unlock both back doors.
There is a 1982-83 that is parked about a few blocks from my house that I could take a shot of
Cheers

ItsaHonda 05-31-2009, 09:31 PM This was my old 83 Accord SE that I had back in 2004-05. Great little car... very well built and ran great, even after 22 years and 180k+ miles.

Wow! I didn't even know you could get an Accord with leather and moonroof in '83! It looks great! I love the old clamshell hoods - that's one little nuance about early Hondas I wish they would have kept.
ItsaHonda 06-02-2009, 03:58 PM Not only did it have leather and a power moonroof, it also had a power antenna (roof mounted), power mirrors/door locks, cruise control, factory stereo equalizer (previous owner removed it from my car), digital clock that also displayed the month and date and IIRC, it also had four wheel disc brakes. The SEs (not sure about the lower end models) also had 4-speed automatics. The 1985 SE model (last year of the 2nd gen) had fuel injection (and quite a bit more power). Personally, I like the front end of the 82-83s better than the 84-85s.
I bought that 83 Accord with about 170k miles in 2004 and made TWO round trips in it from Florida to Michigan as well as made quite a few trips out of town to various car shows and meets.
It had a surprisingly smooth and stable highway ride and despite only having about 75 hp (?), handled 70-80 mph like a champ...just a solid little car all around. In fact, compared to the 96 Accord that I also owned at the time, I felt that the 83 was actually a better made vehicle in terms of overall build quality, material quality, attention to detail, etc.
I came real close to owning a 76 Accord LX hatch 5-spd. in mint condition with 47k original miles, but the deal fell through.
asaga1 06-02-2009, 05:09 PM wow...old school acords!
dexterdog 06-10-2009, 09:38 PM I need to post up a picture of my co workers Accord. He just bought an '83 Accord LX hatchback with around 138k on the odo. Except for a few little blemishes and the need for a new A/C compressor it is super clean. I told him I would give him a complimentary detail because I really want to see it shine.
wardenr 06-11-2009, 02:30 PM To All:
The original Accord is central to what defined one of the finest sedans ever built, in the entire world. As Car & Driver Magazine famously stated, "The Honda Accord is a car that can be recommended without reference." To lose/forget the Accord's wonderful history would be somewhere between reprehensible and outright unconscionable. IMO, the older machinery must be preserved...for posterity.
My trusty '86 makes me appreciate and understand the origins of my '02. And vice-versa. My '02 makes me understand and LOVE my trusty '86!
Most of the earlier-Gens use the Godforsaken Keihin (and Sanyo) A/C compressors. The Keihin (Honda) units are notoriously prone to fail. However, there are various concerns who offer an ND (NipponDenso) conversion, using (I THINK) the excellent "10P15E" and later "10PA15E" compressor units. I might add that "Freeze 12" refridgerant, in lieu of the now-banned "R-12" Freon, works extremely well. It mixes perfectly with existing "R-12" and is available for about $7.99/can from most auto parts stores (such as AutoZone). :)
fastball 06-11-2009, 05:12 PM Anyone with more pictures of first and second gen Accords keep 'em commin! :)

x2!
Lurch 07-19-2009, 04:16 AM Very nice looking cars! My uncle had one of the early Accords - a light teal colored hatchback. They got it new if I remember right and didn't take very good care of it but it held up well as I recall. :)
I've owned many Honda motorcycles : CL350, CX500C, CB750F, CB750C, CB900C, etc.
My cars :
new Clementine '71 VW Beetle
'74 green Chevy Malibu Classic [got from my parents - didn't like that car much - 350 V8 used too much gas for my liking]
new 1980 Datsun 210 2 dr sedan
new silver 1985 Ford Ranger pickup [hunk 'o junk]
1984 maroon Subaru GL coupe,
1987 white Subaru GL 4WD wagon
1994 teal Civic DX Coupe
new leftover black 1999 Toyota Tacoma SR5 Xtracab pickup
1991 black Toyota Cressida
2000 silver Civic DX Coupe
2003 white Nissan Sentra XE
Here's a couple of my Honda cars, the '94 and '00 :

So u switched from a honda to a chevy? why?
ItsaHonda 07-20-2009, 04:58 PM So u switched from a honda to a chevy? why?>>>
...Because I got an exceptional deal on it and I really liked the car... so, why not? This car has MANY good attributes that are very often overlooked/ignored simply because it is a Chevrolet/GM vehicle. It's a great car for what little I paid for it. This Malibu sold for under $17k NEW and came standard with factory fog lights, V6 engine, leather, all power options, sunroof (one-touch), factory rear spoiler, cruise control, CD player, automatic door locks and headlights, etc. I bought it with 64k miles and am now just a few hundred miles short of rolling 70,000 miles on this 7 year old Malibu that still looks and drives like new.
fastball 07-22-2009, 01:04 PM I had a Beretta with the 3100 (it was the car that made me switch to Honda)..... you have about 30,000 miles left on that engine's usefull life before you will have coolant and oil leak issues.
Bowzer 07-22-2009, 02:34 PM I'll have to see if I can find any pics of my 84 or 85 gray Accord hatchbacks. My first Honda's and the ones that made me really fall in love with what Honda provides in a car.
ItsaHonda 07-22-2009, 02:53 PM I bought the car needing an LIM (lower intake manifold) gasket and had both the lower and upper gaskets replaced with the metal gaskets made by Fel-Pro... so there will be no such fatal coolant leaks. I keep tabs on the oil and coolant levels and condition. The job was not any worse than having to get a full timing belt service done on a Honda engine (and hopefully I only have to do it once). What year was your Baretta? The 3.1 and 3100 are not entirely the same motor. The 3100 replaced the old 3.1 in 1994 or so. The 3100 in my car (the "J" vin) was updated in 2000 and is more closely related to the new 3500 and 3900 V6 engines currently being used today.

Ah, I see. Yeah, the Beretta was a 1990 with the 3.1. It was a sweet car when I bought it in 1997 - it had 52k miles, fully loaded (GT), blue on blue with red pin striping and lettering. Power everything, aluminum rims, sweet performance.....
Then, things started falling appart, slowly at first (interior trim breaking and rattling, dash board peeling appart by the defog vent), then the oil and coolant leak issues, paint peeling down to the primer leaving a nice gray dribble of muck down my rear window when it rained (GM knew about the issue but refused to repaint my car).
Needless to say, my next car was the Prelude, and now with the Accord, I have been a happy Honda owner and will remain so for years to come :D

Okay, I fully realize this is a Gen One-Gen Two thread. But I just HAVE to post a couple of photos of my trusty '86. I've owned it exactly 16 (sixteen) years today! (Purchased from the original owner on July 22nd, 1993.) For a treat, I gave my "Old Girl" a wash and hand-wax, then filled "her" up with (required Premium) gas! Now at 216,223 miles, still going STRONG, it's the "love affair with no end to it!"
fastball 07-22-2009, 05:44 PM Uh, dude.... we know you love your '86.... so much so that you posted the same pictures TWICE in the SAME THREAD! (which, BTW, is a different topic, but I digress.......)
SatinSilver 07-23-2009, 09:51 AM Saw an 81 on ebay with only 54k miles in excellent condition. The dope that recently bought it parked the car under a pine tree so now the top is covered in sap. Bidding is at $1375 with 3 days 9 hrs left.

ItsaHonda 07-23-2009, 03:35 PM Oh wow... you just HAD to post that! I'll watch and wait a day or two and see where the bid is... he has a reserve set on it. I had an 81 Civic wagon in that same color. I bought it with 59k original miles in 2003 and in mint condition from a local Honda dealer. I had some basic maint. done to it and it's been running ever since (and has been used as a daily driver since 2004). It's looking a little rough these days, but keeps on going...

fastball 07-25-2009, 08:57 PM You southern states have an advantage over us northern states: no rust.
Honda up untill the late 1990s had bad rust issues. My Prelude is succumbing to it, which is one of the reasons I bought a new car.
You will NOT find an all original Honda pre-1990 without at least some rust with possibly some complete corrosion through the rear quarter pannel above the wheel wells here in Ohio. And a Honda pre-1985? Forget it. Any that were originally from here are a pile of brown dust by now.
ItsaHonda 07-26-2009, 09:06 AM You might be surprised at how many are possibly hidden away. When I was a member of 1stgencivic.org, most of the 1st-2nd gen Civic and Accord owners were either Canadian or from the Northern region. There were only a couple of us from the South... much to my surprise! When Intersection magazine did a 20+ page feature of all gen. Civic owners with their pictures and stories, I was the only one with a 2nd gen from the South along with only one 1st gen Civic owner from California.

It's very possible, even likely, that many parts of Canada do not use salt in the winter, but use sand, or a non-alkaline slury to melt the snow.
Cleveland uses salt, and tons of it, because it's cheap - we have a pretty much unlimited supply under Lake Erie, so you can get it for like $50.00/ton. They've been using it since the 1960s. And when they use it, they USE it - you will get dumped on, piles of it in the street, and the trucks on the highways spew it out over all the lanes. If you get caught behind one you are screwed, as it will just bathe your car in pounds and pounds of salt pellets.
Same for the Buffalo area.
Now, if you go to Denver, which gets probably 3 - 5 times the snow we do, their old cars aren't rusty at all.
It's the salt that kills us here, not the snow.
