hey all,

does anybody have a good resource for Prelude information? my business partner at work is obsessed with them, so I am very curious to get some information on the car. such as:

1. When was the last production model?
2. He says it had paddle shifters on the steering wheel, is this true?
3. Someone mentioned in another thread the Prelude has 4 wheel steering,
again, is this true?
4. how much was a prelude when brand new?
5. around how much do they cost right now?

any specific websites or even people starting a nice Prelude discussion would help me get some info about this car. it sounds really amazing so far, haha.

1.The last production model was 2001.

2.No, there are no paddle shifters on the wheel.

3.Yes, there are models that have the 4ws and it is really fun to drive.

4.I don't know how much it was brand new.

5.Depends on which model/year you are looking at.
www.preludepower.com is a site that I frequent. It has some good info.

ewwww wow, that is hideous. but so was the 1st civic, judging by the top of the DA screen, our 1st accord isn't a pageant winner either. I always see light silver ones on the road, they look pretty darn good imo. they defninitely looked newer than 2001 models, that for sure. with 8 yrs of depreciation, probably figure they go around 6-12k depending on condition. what do you all think?

Not true, the 5th gens had a 'auto stick' type feature where you could tap the gear shifter up and down for shifting on the NON-SH, automatic models, but never any paddle shifters.
3. Someone mentioned in another thread the Prelude has 4 wheel steering,
again, is this true?
The 4WS was definitly an option on the 3rd and 4th gen Preludes. 5th Gen preludes in the US didn't offer this. The systems weren't terribly reliable and most tuners remove 4wS for the weight savings.
4. how much was a prelude when brand new?
Depends on which generation. the latest Generation I believe ended up around 26k and change. Which was one of the biggest contributing factors to the relatively poor sales numbers. The 4th gen in 92, I remember my Dad bought his Black on Black one, brand spanking new Si with Auto Transmission no real features other than alarm (which was ultimately useless cuz the car was stolen in 96) - for around 23k out the door. (1992 Money)
5. around how much do they cost right now?
Depends on which generation car you're looking at. If you want a relatively low mileage (for the age), 2001 model you're probably looking at or below 9 grand. I've seen 5th gens go as low as 2 grand but they were in stupidly crappy shape. Its pretty much impossible to find a clean, in good condition 4th gen. If you are able to Expect to pay no more than 4 grand. If you're buying it for a project car, you can find them as low as $800-$1000 that is more or less a shell for future fun.

Any specific websites or even people starting a nice Prelude discussion would help me get some info about this car. it sounds really amazing so far, haha.

Ask me anything you'd like to know, I have my 92 Prelude still (see pics below) and I'm constantly on those forums listed above beacuse there is still a rather large community of prelude enthusiasts still out there.

I'm by no means an expert, but I've done a lot of research on various things and know them very well at this point so like I said ask any questions you'd like..

Mean time, picture whoring mine:

I always secretly wanted a 5th gen Prelude. If I recall correctly, Car & Driver named the Prelude the best handling car under $30,000 in 2000 (or 2001?) Perhaps I'll look a bit more closely into getting one this year...

my friend just bought a 5th GEN SH from a second hand dealer for 9000 CDN. Really good buy and the car runs well, since then we've done a lot of minor cosmetic changes to it (Dash LED color change, projectors, and scratch touch up)

definately recommend the 5th gen!

so, this car has a pretty large modification following like the civics then huh? it really does look fantastic imo. the headlights & rear of the prelude were way ahead of its time. it looks better than 8/10 cars on the road today - & more modern to boot. I almost wish my Accord was more the Prelude size, not almost, i do wish! thanks again for the pics & info guys, especially Starbai.

i say we start a petition and send it to honda for them to bring it back hahaha. or at least make future cars more like the prelude, that is, smaller and more fun. i don;t understand why they make the s2000, but nothing like the prelude right now. I guess a civic si is close, but not really. the prelude is in between a civic & accord in size. you can fit 5 people in it, 4 comfy. Perhaps the CRS or whatever that new car they have coming out will be prelude-esque. looks as if it could just carve out turns like it was on rails.....i am on a mission to ride in a 5th gen car & convince/help my business partna buy one haha.

I'd rather make a project car out of a Nissan 240SX. I really wanted one for my first car but they were almost impossible to find in good condition. Then I moved on to Preludes but the good ones were out of my price range so I went with the 97 Accord.

pagani Zonda F? Roadster? Cinque? or c12 superballz?? I happen to be a huuuuge fan as well, i choose the Cinque. AMG v12 i believe, but if you own a Pagani Cinque, you would own 20% of the total Cinques produced. thats right, only 5 built!!! arguably the most exclusive super car ever built for production. i read that it makes over 700KG!! of downforce at 240mph w/ the aerodynamics it has. also, it created a carbon-titanium weave for the 1st time used throughout the frame/body of the car. it also comes with an EDFC module which controls multiple suspension settings. the Cinque is lighter than the F roadster, which was made specifically to be light. i can't imagine how euphoric this car must be to drive. i knew you had some good taste SuperBallz, even with that Nissan comment....

86,000 original miles. Still a blast to drive.

It doesn't have VTEC but it has a dual intake that opens a second, large air intake channel above 4,500RPM. The B20 2.0L doesn't burn any oil like the B20a 2.1L in the 90/91 models tend to do.

Trip,

Have you ever accidentally open the trunk fully while the power antenna was still fully extended?

IIRC the rear spoiler will hit the antenna mast, my friend used to have one of these cars and I got yelled at one day for opening the spoiler into the antenna, as if it was my fault he didn't turn-off the radio to lower the antenna! :D

PKT and All:

The original Prelude (nee, per Car & Driver "Qualude,") was actually a very NICE car!

My cousin had a 1980 model (purchased new) which she drove some 180,000 miles. Despite her neglect/abuse, it NEVER broke, not even once. While you may consider it kind of "frumpy" and/or underpowered, it WAS a legitimate, early attempt for Honda's entry into the sports car segment.

HMC used the Prelude as a rolling "test bed" for innovative ideas...such as triple carburetion (a "micro" center unit, for idling), the "2.05" engine featuring ceramic-lined cylinders, and four-wheel steering. It was a car way ahead of most of the competition.

Not wanting the Prelude to "cannabalize" other lines/models, and vice-versa, HMC (sadly) discontinued it. :(

I'd almost KILL to own a mint-condition 1989 "Si" with five-speed!

Hmmm, interesting . . . This is very much the case . . . the spoiler will hit a fully extended antenna. But the factory spoiler is supposed to be wired into the trunk sensor. When I pop the trunk, the antenna automatically and immediately retracts. (My 90 Accord did this too).

Either he had an aftermarket spoiler, the wiring failed or was altered or you were quick on the draw to get your belongings out of the trunk . . . Beer? Bodies? :D

This is why Honda named it "Prelude" . . . it was a prelude of things to come. It was indeed Honda's "technology and performance platform". It typically had Honda's most recent innovations and introduced standard features (most notably the moon roof, ALL Preludes have a moonroof). Was the first to get double wishbone suspension (front, 83.5 Prelude). PGM-FI (Tho the 85 Accord SE-i shared this one.)

Incidentally, Accord (harmony, well balanced) and Civic (for the people) were purposely and thoughtfully named as well.

The 5th gen had a moderately useable back seat, maybe a little smaller than the RSX.

The 4th gen tho forget it, maybe fit ONE person back there with them sitting basically across the entire back seat.

I'm toying with the idea of removing it altogether to install a carputer setup. or something else cool. We'll see funds are tight right now too much shit to do with the house, and the Accord keeps calling me to spend money on its wheels/tires/suspension/stereo.

It looks to be in immaculate shape, and I hope it continues to stay that way. :notworthy:

Haha . . . I totally agree. A clean older vehicle is a rare find. I totally lucked out with mine. Got if from the original owner a few years ago. Only reason he sold it was that his hip was bothering him and he traded for an automatic Accord. (He was 75). 86,000 original miles. Everything works except for the A/C . . the condenser suffered a rock attack. I haven't gotten around to replacing it yet. That will be a bit more involved because I'll have to convert to new R12 which most likely will require replacing the drier, assorted o-rings, maybe the compressor . . .

I loved my RT4WD Wagon so much that when I sold it (a few years ago, also in pristine condition), I was picky about who I sold it to. I flat out told 2 people NO. :D

"My daughter is just learning how to drive . . " Uh, no way dude.

If I have anything to say about it, Prelude ain't going anywhere, anytime soon. I might offer it to the Smithsonian or something.

Thats the way it should be, I dont plan on ever selling my S2000 or Prelude, ever. But if ilife throws me a curve ball and I have no choice best believe its going to someone 3x as crazy as I am just to be sure. And it will have a clause in the contract that I get first dibs on it again when that owner is done with it lol.

And no disrespect to your daughter but dont let her within 2 feet of it! lol.

Congrats on the find of such a pristine example of the car. If I could ever find a pristine 3rd gen (91) I dont think I'd be able to resist temptation to buy it. Problem is I'm running out of places to put these cars lol.

And good luck with the AC. Mine just went out on the 92 prelude, I took it to the dealer with all brand new parts ($600 worth of parts) from discountacparts.com. First new compressor failed, they sent me a 2nd one (dicountacparts.com did) and THAT one failed... one month later I still have no AC, I just got a new compressor (3rd one) from them today.

I'm up to about $1000 IN JUST labor so far. Beause each time I brought another compressor to the dealer from discountacparts.com, they charged me another $300 to discharge/dispose of the freon in the system, put the new one in, and then recharge it. Do yourself a favor and learn from my mistakes, take it to a shop that specializes in AC work if not the Dealer, and buy all your parts and everything from them. I thought I was saving myself $400 in parts by buying BRAND NEW/ OEM PARTS/ WITH A 12 MONTH WARRANTY online. Little did I know, it would end up costing me probably about $1000 more.

DONT skimp on AC work, it WILL come back to bite you in the ass. Replace the system 100% of it all at once, and it will serve you for years and years to come, especially if you have no intention of selling the car anytime soon. Granted all the work will probably cost as much as the whole car is worth, but again, if you plan on keeping it, make sure its well insured, and go for it. I'm by no means an AC expert but I've had to learn alot throughout this whole ordeal so please ask me any questions you may have about the system when you're ready to replace it and I will be glad to help if I'm able to.

Good luck!

(Tho the 85 Accord SE-i shared this one.)

Not to be a picky SOB, but I don't think Accord's had those letters in 85.

One of my all time favorite cars was an 85 Accord LX Hatchback in Graphite Grey.
The LX gave it A/C!

I think the SE badging started in 86.

I read somewhere that Honda moved the prelude to the Acura line up as the CL or last gen TSX. I remember it saying that because it was sport/luxury, and it would get more buyers under the Acura name. This was back in 02-03 when I read that.

This is what wikipedia says about it now:
The Honda Prelude is a sports coupe produced by Japanese automaker Honda from 1978 until 2001. The two-door coupe spanned five generations and was discontinued upon the release of the fourth-generation Honda Integra (Acura RSX in North America) in late 2001, due to its decreasing sales and popularity. In the U.S. auto market, the sixth-generation and subsequent Accord Coupes became the de facto replacement to the Prelude.

That wasn't my daughter I was talking about. It was some dude that wanted to buy my car. I told him NO. :)

DONT skimp on AC work, ...

Good luck!

Exactly why I've been putting it off. Collecting all the parts and will probably end up replacing most of the system. Like you said, it will probably cost as much as the car is worth but it will be worth it.

The 1985 Accord was the second "special edition" Accord offered in the states. The 1983 SE model did not have a fuel injected engine - thus the "i" in the 1985 SE-i trim level. (This engine continued in the 3rd gen Accord on the LXi models while DX and LX continued on with carburated engines.) 1985 SE-i model added leather, power moonroof, an upgraded sound system and alloy wheels.

The SE trim level started as a last model year offering in a generational cycle with extra luxury and features. Later model years it became more of a "value package" trim level and not a top of the line model.

I remember honda saying that they would leave the Accord Coupe was to replace the Prelude. And those who wanted a sportier car, would go for the RSX which was roughly the price of the Prelude too.

As much as I appreciate my car (front wheel drive and all) couldnt you save up and buy and s2k? I think the prelude is nice, but nothing compared to the s2k.

Yes but see the s2000 is an all out harsh sports car. Zero creature comforts, no backseat, no trunk space, noisy as hell, the softop isn't good if you live in the north etc... etc... the prelude while it was a sporty car, wasn't an all out sports car.

I own both the Prelude, s2000, and a V6 accord coupe... and belive me while they're all relatively small, they all have VERY different uses/driving feeling.

I would never recommend an s2000 to anyone who needs a car to do pretty much anything but put a huge smile on your face. extremely impractical. its the whole reason I bought hte prelude to throw around and daily drive.

Trip and All:

Very few 1985 Accord "SE-i" were built....hence very few even recall it. As you point out, it features the "PGM-FI" system utilized/carried over on my trusty '86. It incorporates "pintle" style injectors similar to that used on the Bosch "K-Jetronic" and "L-Jetronic" systems used on many European cars. It is a most excellent fuel system, and I've never had a single issue.

There is a mint-condition 1985 "SE-i" I infrequently see. Purchased new at my local dealer, Silver over Red, with only 150K miles, the car is simply and still immaculate. When I saw it in for an oil change, I asked the (elderly) woman owner how much she would take for it. And she goes, "Oh, about a MILLION dollars!" Sure ended that discussion pretty fast!

Just sold my white diamond pearl 98 sh a few weeks ago. I loved that car and if I find a good deal on another 5th gen, I would defn buy it again. With 5th gens, be super careful, they are known to burn oil like no tomorrow.

Coming back from a failed job and lifestyle change out in Phoenix, Arizona. I had to see NRAO's VLA in New Mexico on the way back to the Chicago area. Just traded this car in this April 2009 for my 2009 Accord Coupe V6.

I was considering turning this thread into this thread I made on s2ki a long time ago.

It was thread that basically posted almost all the prelude pics I had on my hard drive (about 600-800 pics)

Instead of doing that, I'll just post a link to that thread:
