I'm a member at bobistheoilguy and while I'm sold on the 20wt oils being fine for Honda's, this is what the Asian/European markets use. It's all about CAFE, corporate average fuel efficiency. Many debates go on over there about "thick vs thin". I currently run German Castrol 0w-30 in my 2.4L Accord. So far so good....

Honda sells their own oil here in the USA.

"He goes on to make a firm recommendation for the best engine oil for your Honda engine, the oil available from the dealer is probably the best. Personally, I think his recommendation makes the best sense."
That decision is probably the easiest for most folks but not the absolute best for the consumer. It's best for Honda, that's for sure.
buster,
Perception, & as a result availability, is also part of the equation on what weight Honda will recommend in different parts of the world. For examply, they aren't going to recommend 0W30 b/c that's exclusively synthetic. It will result in more expensive oil changes for a lot of folks. It might reduce wear & allow the engine to last to say 500k miles but the original owner will rarely directly benefit from this higher cost of ownership, so that's not a good recommendation.

About twenty years ago a book titled "Drive It Forever" stated 20w oil could not adequately protect an IC engine. Apparently this is outdated, but I feel better with 5w-30 and a Honda Tech told me the difference between 5w-30 and 5w-20 is zilch.

That Honda oil is 15-40? I run that in my f-350 diesel and it is pretty damn thick, especially when I change the oil in the winter time with cold bottles. It pours out like maple syrup.

Ben agree 100%. Not necessary to run anything more then a 20wt.

The difference between a 5W30 & a 5W20 can be pretty great just like it can be between two different 5W30 oils. Different basestocks might be used, different additive packages, etc. The viscosity or "weight" difference between 5W20 & 5W30 is sometimes not a whole lot.
Most mechanics don't know a whole lot about oil chemistry.
