You will get so many different answers to this question that you will wish you never asked.

A good test for microfiber towels is to rub them against the surface of a CD. If the microfiber scratches the CD, it will also scratch your car.

I find that generally, Viking microfibers are a good balance between cost and quality- and they are available in stores (autozone, kmart, target, etc.). Different towels have different purposes. I use a 3'x3' waffle weave for drying, some smaller, more plush towels for polish/LSP removal, small glass towels with a tighter weave, etc. Your best bet is to try a few out and see what suits you best.

There are certainly brands out there that make better towels, but many are only available online and at a considerably higher cost.

To get you started-check Walmart. My local one currently has a 10 pack of viking products on sale for 10 bucks- it includes a microfiber wheel wand, microfiber sponge, microfiber wash mit, 3 polishing towels, 1 drying towel, 1 bug scrubber (although I wouldn't use this) and 2 mid-size towels I found good for interiors.

I have about 100 from Poorboy's, excellent towels. The absolute best in my opinion are the cotton mf towels from here:

They're not cheap but nothing else comes close to them.

It really is great- the only problem is that it is one of their smaller drying towels-probably about 2'x2'.

Either way, the mit and the wheel wand go for about 4 bucks a piece or more, so the whole set for 10 bucks is insane. I picked up two of them.

cobra MF or PAKSHAK are about the best you can get. Pricey, but worth it. For OTC stuff, Vroom has some decent stuff, and Vikings are good as well.

Costco sells yellow ones that work great. Rip off the tag, wash them, then dry. I always tumble an extra cycle to get all the lint out of them the first time before I use them.

I've had such linting problems with those, even after washing them several times. Autozone has self-branded rags that work pretty well.

We use a ton of them(costco), the more you wash/use them the better they get.

that's what I have. Not a problem at all and the price is decent. A bag lasted over a year and that's for 3 cars.

In my opinion, you get what you pay for when it comes to micro fiber towels and other car-care products. I would 2nd the recommendation of Pakshak towels. I think I spent $4 for one, but I still have the same towels from 3 years ago!
