View Full Version : Empty gas light and mileage
SpeedIllusion 06-27-2009, 02:12 AM Someone correct me if I'm calculating something wrong here.
I have the Sedan EX-L which according to the manual has a 70 liter gas tank.
On average I get about 600km's before my empty gas light comes on, so 600km/60L = 10km/L.
If the tank is 70L - 60L(I drove) = 10L left in the tank.
10L x 10km/L = 100km.
Does that make sense? Most of the cars I owned before would give me about 10km more of driving when the light comes on and this Accord gives me 100km.
The low fuel indicator comes on at different times and only gives an approximation of what is left in the tank. It can vary greatly.
While the owner's manual states one thing, real world use varies greatly. Some people in the US have 2 or more gallons when the light comes on. My light never came on until there was maybe 1/2 gallon left.
Furple 06-27-2009, 10:20 AM My light consistently comes on with around 3.5 gallons left. For highway cruising I can do almost another 100 miles before I fill up. Around town I can get away with 60ish but I usually just fill up when the light comes on.

.............seems as tho' (no pun intended) we have an accord here.
My low fuel light consistently glows with 3.3 gallons remaining........
all the best, ez....
zexen 06-27-2009, 01:08 PM Mine comes on somewhere around the 2-3 gallon range. Most of my cars have always given me 2-3 gallons, except my old 200SX. That thing didn't even have a light lol. I found that out the hard way not too long after I got it.
fastball 06-27-2009, 03:17 PM It's kinda scary that we have people who drive untill their low fuel light comes on :paranoid:

better of, its better to do that so you can burn off as much deposits from the bottom of the fuel tank, just have to know your limit and when to finally fill up

Uh, your fuel filter (which is part of the fuel pump in the fuel tank itself), is suppose to prevent any "deposit" fom being picked up and sent to the engine.........

My light comes on with around 3.5 to 4 gallons left. This is perfectly acceptable time to fill up. I usually fill up at 1/4 of a tank which is usually right before the light comes on. Yes, you are correct to assume that it is not good to run your car close to empty on a consistent basis but the low fuel light is not an indication of a tank that is close to empty.
Do you fill up when your gas gauge reads 1/2 full(I'm an optimist by the way)?
vadimk 06-27-2009, 10:43 PM i refuel when my needle is below the line, i dont look for no freakin light, ur all paranoid!

I want my fuel pump to last 200k miles instead of burning out prematurely.
It takes 15 gallons to fill up from when the fuel light first on in my car.
listen to remix 06-28-2009, 04:41 AM I have 2-3 gallons left before the fuel light comes on. I read that it's better not to wait that long. Plus, it's summer and gas prices are rising. I would try to fuel up ASAP, everytime.
blackv6 06-29-2009, 12:23 AM i usually have 10 liters left once my light is up, on my v6

According to my trip computer, my light comes on with 40 miles to go before empty.

I know this is not a fair comparison, but I was once driving a 1987 Cadillac Sedan DeVille with the fuel computer, and it was telling me I had 42 miles to empty..... I stalled out on the freeway. Luckily I was right around the corner from the gas station I was heading to anyway. Had to coast down the off ramp in neutral, hoped the light didn't turn red (which it didn't), and I creaked into the gas station at about 5 mph..... pushed it to the pump.
psk256 06-29-2009, 10:00 AM Last fillup light came on with 3.3 gallons left.
DNSRadio 07-05-2009, 10:15 AM ok heres the thing
real life driving varies person to person
if you drive hard or granny style
the #'s they give you at the dealership and in the manual and etc are all avg.
for me
70L tank lasts anywhere from 640 km - 790km
depends on how i drive
if i drive like a granny all the time and ensure my ECO light is on.. then i can get close to the 790 mark... if i just speed around and dont give a **** about anything i can prob get around 640...
so i totally depends on how you drive

True AND False. If you have 100km which is like 62 miles under low fuel light then that's 6 times what the OP is expecting it based on other cars driven so the point is mostly moot.
chriswashington 07-06-2009, 10:18 PM Mine comes on a 2.5 gallons, and haven't tried to push the issue lol. I get about 450 miles to the tank before the light comes on (highway @ 80-85 mph)
