You should always follow what the manual calls for. If it says 4.5 fill 4.5. Adding a bit more won't hurt the car but if you add a lot it could cause damage.

How about you put it 4.5 and then check it the next day? What is so difficult about putting in 4.5 qt's?

I check via dipstick after fill up... I believe it was 5 qts. that went in for me last time I did an oil change.

What is the deal with 5 quarts? There are indicators on the side of the jug to tell you where the 1/2 quart is. You need to check the dipstick anyway after the change. As long as it isn't too much over the top hole you are ok but really you should only put in 4.5. You don't want any foaming of the oil as this will damage your engine.

because the big oil bottle is 5qt, and it's cheaper to buy than 5 little oil bottles

So pour 4.5 quarts out of the 5 quart jug and keep the last 0.5 quart for later.

WTF does that have to do with anything? You're getting 5 qts no matter what the container is. :headbash:

Yeah no kidding. But there are markers on the side of the bottle to tell you where each quart is. Is it really worth it to you to put an extra 1/2 quart into your engine and cause a risk of damaging your engine even if the risk is very very low? If you don't want to keep that extra 1/2 quart, dump your used oil back in there and take it to a recycling center.

I pour some of the leftover 1/2 qt after I drain my oil to get more of the used oil out. Just did my oil change over the weekend and I put in a bit under 4 1/2 qt.

The additional 1/2 quart won't hurt, but it's a waste of oil, because the engine doesn't need it.
