View Full Version : Project Audi Headlight LED and high mount LED Brake Light! mikey008 07-15-2009, 10:44 PM Simliar to a fellow Drive Accord member, but not as hardcore, but still a lot of work! mikey008 07-15-2009, 10:48 PM Continuation mikey008 07-15-2009, 10:54 PM and on..... stompdx 07-15-2009, 10:57 PM It actually doesn't look as wanna-be as I was expecting. You should take the pics with a different camera though, the lights just look really blurry/glare-y so it's a hit hard to tell how the LED's look. Could you post a pic of the car in the daylight? I've wondered what the painted headlights looked like during the day. Nice job :) mikey008 07-15-2009, 10:57 PM ....................notice all the dead bugs on my bumper!!! mikey008 07-15-2009, 10:59 PM And Lastly.......the high mount LED Brake light mikey008 07-15-2009, 11:01 PM It actually doesn't look as wanna-be as I was expecting. You should take the pics with a different camera though, the lights just look really blurry/glare-y so it's a hit hard to tell how the LED's look. Could you post a pic of the car in the daylight? I've wondered what the painted headlights looked like during the day. Nice job :) Hope the second set of pics help...they're during the daylight! My camera is sometimes a hit or miss!!:thmsup: jarrod2k5 07-15-2009, 11:06 PM Omg that is f'n awesome I do like it. Im super jealous. Nice man! Hitman 07-16-2009, 03:33 AM I think that looks sweet too! Good job! How hard is it to wire those leds? Also, what LEDs did you use? L's TLS 07-16-2009, 04:34 AM That looks pretty good man. Nice work. How well does the flat black spray paint match the factory housing flat black in person and I would like to know what LEDs you used for the high mount brake light. Those leds in the headlight r nice too Mase764 07-16-2009, 05:01 AM Great work! ill send you my lights and pay you! Hitman 07-16-2009, 05:17 AM Just curious... but why did you angle your LEDs inwards? Why not run them along the edge all the way down to the inner edges? rwlib3 07-16-2009, 05:23 AM looks great! J_Honda14 07-16-2009, 06:16 AM Just curious... but why did you angle your LEDs inwards? Why not run them along the edge all the way down to the inner edges? +1. Looks pretty good anyways. Not a fan of the high brake light though. mikey008 07-16-2009, 06:45 AM I think that looks sweet too! Good job! How hard is it to wire those leds? Also, what LEDs did you use? Wired them to the corner ambers...and I used those flexiable LED strips from an internet source http://www.oznium.com/led-flex-strips That looks pretty good man. Nice work. How well does the flat black spray paint match the factory housing flat black in person and I would like to know what LEDs you used for the high mount brake light. Those leds in the headlight r nice too The black spray paint matches the housing pretty well in my opinion. People didn't even notice that I painted the inner housing. The LEDs that I used are those flexiable LED Strips...the source where i got them from are on the link above. Just measure the amount you wish to have! Just curious... but why did you angle your LEDs inwards? Why not run them along the edge all the way down to the inner edges? I didn't angel inwards...I angled it up along to where the corner ambers are! Just to give it a little bit of character. If you look at the actual/original black housing, I just followed the edge if it. I thought about having it to the edge where it's straight, but thought it was to plain looking if it were straight! http://www.autotropolis.com/web/images/still_0640_Larger/5804/5804_st0640_043.jpg http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=23251&stc=1&d=1247727005 Neiklot 07-16-2009, 07:08 AM looks pretty nice...though if I were you'd i'd have tried to find LED strips that have more space in between each LED...the space gives it more character imho gj though mikey008 07-16-2009, 07:15 AM True.....cuz those AUDI's are pretty well spaced out! But it wasn't put into consideration i guess.....maybe for my next headlight project! hahaha! jkcheng122 07-16-2009, 07:17 AM Maybe if you remove every other bulb you can get them more spaced out. It does look like the inner part isn't at the front edge of the headlight housing. Looks good btw, we definitely need better pics. The shots you have are over exposed. GigaS27 07-16-2009, 07:21 AM Nice Job jkcheng122 07-16-2009, 07:23 AM This is what I mean, I dunno if others agree with me. http://img60.imageshack.us/img60/4439/img00733.jpg (http://img60.imageshack.us/i/img00733.jpg/) xxDaJackalxx 07-16-2009, 07:38 AM I agree with you and that was my first impression of the pix. Still a good job, but I would have tried to get them more flush with the headlight housing. Mr.Coupe 07-16-2009, 07:45 AM You should make a DIY for this type of work! So members like me can do it! jkcheng122 07-16-2009, 07:47 AM You should make a DIY for this type of work! So members like me can do it! It's pretty difficult and requires some precision though I think to make sure the headlight housing is resealed completely. jLim 07-16-2009, 07:54 AM Dam, that looks great. Jealous.:D jkcheng122 07-16-2009, 07:57 AM Dam, that looks great. Jealous.:D Yeah very jealous. Those would look nice as replacement for DRLs. Can our cars even be wired so that the DRLs don't light up while car is on but still function as high-beams? mikey008 07-16-2009, 08:00 AM This is what I mean, I dunno if others agree with me. http://img60.imageshack.us/img60/4439/img00733.jpg (http://img60.imageshack.us/i/img00733.jpg/) This was originally my first thought, but after placing it there and turning the LEDs on, I didn't like the look very much in my opinion. Looked tacky! Because the LEDS would reflect off the lense and create wavey lines up the lense. I even got two other opinions and they all told me to do it the way I have now. But thanks for the input though! 08CoupeFella 07-16-2009, 08:06 AM You're my hero... mikey008 07-16-2009, 08:07 AM Yeah very jealous. Those would look nice as replacement for DRLs. Can our cars even be wired so that the DRLs don't light up while car is on but still function as high-beams? I forgot to mention that I disabled the DRL so it won't clast with the LEDs. (I asked Mattchatwin) Just look under the fuse box located under the driverside and pull the fuse that says DRL. The high beams still work though:thmsup: jkcheng122 07-16-2009, 08:13 AM I forgot to mention that I disabled the DRL so it won't clast with the LEDs. So members like me can do it! Yeah, i'm actually doing another LED work for my buddy's 7th gen accord....I'll take BETTER pics this time with details and I'll see what i can create in terms of a DIY!:thmsup: Kayzle 07-16-2009, 08:54 AM they look sick during the day, painted housing is the way to go! listen to remix 07-16-2009, 09:57 AM they look sick during the day, painted housing is the way to go! The painted housings look great. Did you have to prime or sand anything first? starbai 07-16-2009, 10:01 AM More information ont he high mount brake light! thats my favorite! Kayzle 07-16-2009, 10:04 AM The painted housings look great. Did you have to prime or sand anything first? No sanding needed, just coat it with primer and use the krylon paints made for plastics Sparky 07-16-2009, 10:16 AM Looks great! LED's doesn't like high temperature though. Some of the new Audi's I've seen on the road already have bad LEDs. mikey008 07-16-2009, 11:26 AM The painted housings look great. Did you have to prime or sand anything first? Yeah....sanding you don't really have to, but I did it anyways! Then primer and flat black paint!! More information ont he high mount brake light! thats my favorite! Sure, what kind of info are you hoping for ?? Kayzle 07-16-2009, 11:30 AM I'm really surprised you didn't paint your amber corners, if my car was any color other than black I would have, did you take your inside amber bulbs out"? I dont see them lighting up starbai 07-16-2009, 11:54 AM Yeah....sanding you don't really have to, but I did it anyways! Then primer and flat black paint!! Sure, what kind of info are you hoping for ?? How you did it? What parts? Whered you buy from? Approx Cost? Procedure? How did you mount it up there? Any better pics? Pretty much whatever you can think of that I'd need to know to do it myself. nighthawkcoupe 07-16-2009, 01:26 PM The painted housings look good. Not sure how I feel about the LEDs. At night, they look pretty cool-I actually like the glare produced by having the string of LEDs recessed in the housing a bit. During the day, they look kind of like a cheap add-on. The 3rd brake light looks OK, but I would like it more if it spanned the whole top of your window-like a Bentley GT. It reminds me a bit too much of the strings of red LEDs you see on pickups. Don't get me wrong-it looks like you did some good work and put a lot of thought into it, just not my cup of tea. mikey008 07-16-2009, 01:47 PM I'm really surprised you didn't paint your amber corners, if my car was any color other than black I would have, did you take your inside amber bulbs out"? I dont see them lighting up Surprisingly I like the Amber Corners....or else I would of tint or take them out. As for the inside amber...I just cut the wire so that it would not light up with the rest of the headlight and have it just blink for turning. Cuz it'll look too tacky to have two amber out lights and white LED in the middle! Kayzle 07-16-2009, 01:49 PM Surprisingly I like the Amber Corners....or else I would of tint or take them out. I prefer all black, just not on my car but on the blinker YOu could bought a new bulb that lights up white! mikey008 07-16-2009, 01:50 PM The painted housings look good. No worries dude....everyone has their opinions! The high mount LED for the brake lights I couldn't get the LED strip to go from end to end, it just wasn't available....it was either i go shorter or go WAY longer! I like how you did the DIY front lip, but it's not my cup of tea in my opinion. Looks cheap to me, but it's your car dude....not mine! But for what it is....you did a wicked job! Where did you get the grill by the way?? Thanks for your input!! jkcheng122 07-16-2009, 01:51 PM Still want to see better pictures taken where there's no glare unless the glare is there when you look at the lights during the day in person. Kayzle 07-16-2009, 01:53 PM Still want to see better pictures taken where there's no glare unless the glare is there when you look at the lights during the day in person. Doubt theres is glare with the painted housing, plus thats obviously a camera phone, he needs an slr to show what they really look like mikey008 07-16-2009, 02:29 PM Doubt theres is glare with the painted housing, plus thats obviously a camera phone, he needs an slr to show what they really look like Yeeeah...I don't have a proper camera to reduce that glare....the best that I can do is take day shots with what i have on different angles.... mikey008 07-16-2009, 02:35 PM I prefer all black, just not on my car but on the blinker YOu could bought a new bulb that lights up white! Where did you get the grill by the way?? Thanks for your input!! NP- I know what you are saying about the lip-still not sure if I am completely sold on it either, but thanks for the input. Either way I think the headlights are definitely an improvement over the stock look- didn't notice it only cost 40 bucks also! The grille is another really cheap mod- actually the stock grille with the addition of some chrome wheel well trim from PepBoys. I believe it was Morcheez who did it first (at least for the coupe). If you search "autozone grille" you should find various styles of it done on these forums. Here is the product I used-cut into strips to fit-already comes backed with really strong 3m tape. Comes rolled up like shown below, in a flat box for about 15 bucks IIRC. http://www.jcwhitney.com/wcsstore/jcwhitney/images/imagecache/G_12652G_SW_1.jpg krn118 07-16-2009, 02:46 PM looks really good. i would've ran it along the whole bottom though. bruceleroy 07-16-2009, 02:49 PM nice job krn118 07-16-2009, 03:12 PM http://www.dubnet.org/s6lights/mk5-s6lights-diy.pdf heres a DIY link to make some custom ones..They're not for the accord but show you the basic structure of how to make custom LED anythings.... mikey008 07-16-2009, 03:24 PM How you did it? Alright Starbai...I quickly did a DIY on that High mount brake light! Hope this helps! GOOD Luck!!! - So I bought and "LED Flexiable Strips" in RED of course that is about 28 inch for $28.99. - Shipping was about $5 USD. - Comes with 3M tape where you can mount by sticking in on a clean surface! - Considering its 28 inches long, you're going to have to center it by measuring it out Source Online: www.oznium.com http://www.oznium.com/product_photos/large/2449.jpg Here's some detailed pics! mikey008 07-16-2009, 03:26 PM NP- I know what you are saying about the lip-still not sure if I am completely sold on it either, but thanks for the input. The rear break light looks pretty nice....now if only the would make a bolt on side mirror turn signal, id buy in a heart beat! mattchatwin 08-04-2009, 01:18 PM Hey Mikey, turned out pretty good. Can't wait to catch up at the Calgary meet at the end of the month. Let me know how those LED's hold out as you know I had a few burn out in my custom build and have redone it (my signature shows the old setup, the new one has 15 LED's instead of 11 and the front output is better). Still looking for improvement options on my setup. AznX TL 08-04-2009, 01:23 PM headlights look great, do your led brake lights come on before the rest of your lights? mikey008 08-04-2009, 08:06 PM Hey Mikey, turned out pretty good. So hopefully the will increase the life span! lol headlights look great, do your led brake lights come on before the rest of your lights? Well once I apply the brakes they do come on a tad bit quicker than the rest of the brake lights. But it's not a huge deal. Just as long as they all work! morcheez 08-04-2009, 09:54 PM looks good man ...u should pop open those tails and put some leds in there mikey008 08-05-2009, 02:47 PM looks good man ...u should pop open those tails and put some leds in there Next project possibly! It has already crossed my mind! Just gotta do me research and see how i'm gonna go about it! 5th honda 08-08-2009, 06:46 AM Nice work. Re the led brake light - since they're not in an enclosed housing, when you brake when it's dark out, are they obnoxiously bright in your rearview mirror? Also, they look very bright, which is great for safety, but how bright do you think they'd look through 20% tint and the matrix - my stock brake light is now very dim because of the tint. Again, nice work. starbai 08-08-2009, 07:03 AM Nice work. Various websites show weatherproof strips available. mikey008 08-08-2009, 07:49 AM Nice work. Again, nice work. 1) Definitely brighter at night, basically lights up the speaker panels and rear seats! I took black vinyl, and tired to enclosed that LED as much as I can. So it helped a bit! 2) I would know how bright it would be through 20% tint? Still probably be noticable for sure. Think of how your actual vision is like at night when you drive. Obviously reduced a bit, but you can still see!! starbai 11-16-2009, 07:59 AM SO i've been looking through oznium... looking for an LED strip of some sort that is water proof and very low profile (hard to see the strip) I want to figure out a way to mount it on the OUTSIDE of my car... on the rearward facing side of my roof spoiler... What do you guys think?? I dont want it to be huge/gaudy. I'm thinking about ripping the spoiler off the glass and trying to see how I could some how mount some RED LED's in it to make that my 3rd brake light... I could probably easily run the wire for it down the glass channel the way I ran the XM antenna in my old TSX. I tried doing it inside the car but Ijust dont like how it lights up the whole back deck. More importantly i dont like how it looks with the dott matrix. If I do it lower like on top of the OEM 3rd brake light then i can't get it even/straight... and it still lights up the interior of the car too much. I'm trying to think about what other options there are interms of trim or something that i can use to block the light from spilling into the interior.... I really like the idea of doing something OUTSIDE on the roof spoiler... but gotta find something waterproof. and not too long. 24 inches max--- whole window is about 40.1" 1OfManyNguyens 11-16-2009, 12:46 PM Im not a big fan of most of the LED projects but this one looks very clean. Great work! mikey008 12-31-2009, 12:31 PM starbai: I saw your thread about the 3rd brake light mounted on the outside on your upper rear spoiler. It looks sick! I would definitely do the same, but I do'nt have the same rear spoiler as you! Because I agree...i am getting annoyed on how my whole rear interior lights up at night. Especially when i drive ppl and see there heads light up! So i'm trying to figure out another alternative! |
