View Full Version : Purchasing HIDs

Since I am no longer unemployed and finally have an income, I've decided to purchase new headlights.. Based on what I've read on the forum, my choice is 55w 5000k HIDs..

Basically, I was thinking of changing the daytime, low beam, and high beams to HID, just to maintain a sleek similar appearance. Is this normal? or am I missing something important? Please share your opinions and your own HID choices..

What bulbs will I need to purchase and where is the best place to get them? Retro Solutions seems popular, so i've been looking at their site. Which kits will I need and roughly how much will it cost?

I have no experience with headlights or car modification, so please make it newb friendly! Thanks

5000k is perfect temp it a nice white light with little to no blue, 55 watt is unnecessary though, go with 35

5k is the best, great color and best output after stock 4300k temps. you dont need 55, 35 is plenty

Congrats on not being unemployed, bet that is a huge relief!

Really you only need to focus on the lows as you use those the most. The highs we only suggest if you do a lot of quiet back country roads where you won't have to flip back and forth constantly.

Honestly my HIDs are just about as bright as my high beams so I dont see myself ever actualyl using my highs,

are u wanting hid highbeams for the DRL's or for your actual brights

35w it is! lol

I use my high beams very often.. I live in a rural area with no streetlights and dark roads, so every night on my way home my high beams are on.. are the high beams and DRLs the same bulb? I will definiately want to change my lows, and if I only need one kit for the DRLs and the highbeams combined then i might as well change those as well.

Which kits are for which lights?
and how are slim and bixenon kits different from the regular ones?
:dunno:

There are many stickies that have great kits, I'm going with the Retro Solutions 5000k H11 35w myself. They sell the whole kit for a pretty good deal. :D

I just got 55 watt and it is SO much brighter than the 33watt. I would say get the 55 watt. you wouldnt even need high beam

HIDs aren't meant for the flashing on/off of high beams, so unless you're going to leave them on for a long period of time, it wouldn't be a good idea.
And don't get HIDs for DRLs...just don't. I don't think you'll have enough space for 6 ballasts (2 for each, low & high beam, and DRLs) anyway.

I believe the DRL is the highbeam, just using less power.

so which lights have you guys replaced on your rides with HIDs? just your lowbeams?
Kiribati has mentioned that they should only be used on lights that stay on for a while, and since my high beams do not, I have decided against getting HID highbeams.. As for the lowbeams and DRLs, they're still up for grabs! Has anyone changed both or do you usually just do the lows or daytime alone?

your high beams are your DRL...DRL just uses less power thats all and Yes most people just put HIDs on there low beams. You can also put HIDs on your foglights too same type of bulb h11..but i dont think u should put HIDs on your high beams.

Yes, same bulb. The problem is the DRLs are the high beams running at partial power. When you add on one of our HID kits in the correct manner, this means the highs are full power when the DRLs are engaged, which during the day can be blinding and very much not recommended.
So for the US where DRLs are not mandatory we recommend defeating them if you want to use HID high beams, in Canada we can not recommend HID high beams.

Oh, and we only recommend HID high beams if you find yourself driving with the highs on for long stretches of road, they do take time to warm up to full output where halogen bulbs are a much faster on time to full intensity.

While we have this topic, I'd also like to ask some questions.....

I just bought an '09 coupe 6-6, and I would also like to add HIDs.

I have read if you leave the headlamp system in "auto" mode, that can be stressfull to the HID bulbs. My headlights will turn on briefly when I start my car because it's always in the garage, and we have indoor parking at work. Then, when I hit daylight they will shut off. Is this too stressfull on HIDs? If so, how do people who drive cars with stock HIDs from the factory deal with this issue?

Also, running HIDs for the fogs is very interesting - any difference in power or do I get the same kit for both headlamps and foglamps? I am considering 55W 5000k.

Thanks!

umm..I have a EX and it just auto turn off but if you have HIDs I would recommend manually turning it on and off...come on dont be lazy its just right there. I don't know about running 55w on your fogs but I wouldn't. Right now I am running 2x 35watt hid kits...one for my low beams and one for my foglights...my lowbeams are 6000k and 3000k for my foglights... looks clean i just installed it this weekend too.

I like the auto headlamp feature :dunno:

Plus, it turns your lights on when you hit the unlock button. I don't think they turn on if you don't have it in auto.

The stress is less of a concern on ballasts with instant hot re-strike capability like ours. My Lexus OE HID lamps have auto-on, and they do the same thing, as well as turn on before the engine and flicker while it cranks over which is just not a good idea for other reasons.

You can really do either or for the fogs and headlamps, generally people will stick to the same wattage or do the 55w low beams and 35w fogs.

So with your lamps, if I leave the setting in auto mode, I should have less to worry about than other setups which take time to get hot?

Sounds good.

And 55w low beams with 35w fogs - sounds logical. I don't rely on the fogs for driving so much as I just think they make the car!

This sounds like a great setup. I will be ordering from you soon! Can't wait to see the end result!

You have less to worry about, but the bulbs in either case will take a little bit to get hot and up to operating temperature. I think in the long run there may be some decrease in bulb life... but we honestly have bulbs on cycle testers with ballasts and they still last for the equivalent of many many years with nothing but on/off operation. Its also a lifetime warranty on the DIGITAL brand product so you will that on your side as well.

Some blue coated bulbs. The blue coating filters out the halogen output to make it more pur white

Not going to get the DRLs to white though, it'll be whiter than stock but it won't look white due to the low output of DRLs. With blue-coated bulbs it will look white when you turn the high-beams on.

Check in this thread I made after I finished some bulb mods. http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/showthread.php?t=33123

Not a mod, maybe some trims don't have it though.

The bulbs are basically universal, assuming your older kit is 35w ballasts all you have to do is make sure the connections are the same.
