: Alternative to OEM Rear parking camera
Signal9 07-24-2009, 03:50 PM I just installed a parking camera that I got from Ebay.

This camera replaces the passenger side license plate light assembly. you remove the whole assembly and the camera snaps into its place.
The only way to remove the camera without breaking the mounts is from within the trunk.
The camera installs in under 5 minutes, even if you have the trunk insulator, just unsnap those plastic pushpins to gain access to the interior of the trunk lid.
I was very surprised that its not that visible even on a white colored car.
Looks more factory than the license plate holder held cameras. It has a led light to the right of the camera to make up for the loss of the factoy light. I would suggest buying an LED white bulb for the driver side so the lights are the same color.
No holes to drill, nothing to cut like the OEM camera.
$85.00 delivered. Came directly from China to CA. Took 2 days to get here.
I did not expect it to here that soon and I am still in the process of shopping for a LCD screen to go in front of the shifter cubbie hole area.
Here's some not so great pictures.

DNSRadio 07-24-2009, 04:22 PM any pics of it in use?
craziexstylez 07-24-2009, 05:53 PM Doyou have to remove your rear seat for the installation? Post up some diy pic, I'm interested in this mod.
Evilv2 07-24-2009, 05:56 PM any pics of it in use?Idk if he has it in use yet, he said he's still looking for an LCD screen. :dunno:
Signal9 07-24-2009, 06:57 PM Well, I could power it up and run the video cable to my wife's RAV4 which has a pair of headrest 7 lcd display for the kids.
I will try to see if I can do that tomorrow.
8thGenInspire 07-24-2009, 11:11 PM hmm so you bought a camera that doesn't do anything at the moment...
can u take some pics of the led light it has at night? :D
Calamity Coyote 07-24-2009, 11:46 PM Also curious about the night vision especially since I don't see any night vision LED's on it anywhere.
Signal9 07-25-2009, 01:05 PM Did not expect 1 1/2 day UPS Delivery from China. Last time I ordered something from Ebay that was coming from China took 3+ weeks.
Wife + kids + RAV4 had taken off this morning before I could run the video cord from my Accord to her DVD Headrest system.
I don't believe their is night vision for this camera. Hopefully the reverse light illumination should be adequete.
Signal9 07-30-2009, 06:12 PM Here's some updated pictures.

Its still daylight here, so I will take another picture when the sun is set and garage open.
craziexstylez 07-30-2009, 06:28 PM Look good, how did you install it(detail please)?
Signal9 07-30-2009, 06:47 PM Installation was fairly simple for the camera since it snap right into the right side license plate light socket.
Routed wires down the right side of the trunk lid and used plastic tubing to cover the wires and zip tied the loom to the trunk hinge.
Got power from the right passenger side reverse light. blue = +12 volt goest o Red on camera. Black = -12 volts / ground.
Ran 1 extra wire from reverse light socket and video cable down passenger side trim track. kick panels etc.
The LCD display comes with a base/stand. I bought a 10,00 cigarette light adapter with on/off switch built into from radioshack. I am using that currently until I hardware the lcd power supply. With the center console storage tray door open, i placed the LCD display under it with a wedge fit adjusted by the vertical height adjustment of the base for a snug fit.
Parking in high theft area, the lcd display uses a single 5 pin molex with plug guide so I can disconnect it and store the lcd in the center console armrest.
Total cost.
$85.00 for camera. ebay

HondaCoupe 07-30-2009, 09:17 PM is your reverse camera always on or only goes on when you put in reverse?
do u know how to make it go on only in reverse?
morcheez 07-30-2009, 09:24 PM hmm wonder if i can add this to my clarion headunit
Signal9 07-31-2009, 06:36 PM I wired the power to only come on when the reverse gear is selected.
I just located the reverse light bulb and tested which wire was positive and which one was negative. In my case, light blue is positive and black is ground or negative.
You could I guess wired it to any 12 volt source in the car if you want.
Calamity Coyote 07-31-2009, 09:34 PM Looks interesting. Not sure if it would work on my 03' though. It only has one tag light. I've been using the license plate mounted cameras and I have to say the biggest problem I have with those is keeping water out. Please keep us posted when you take it to the car wash and let me know how it holds up.
Signal9 07-31-2009, 10:46 PM The camera has built-in 5k led light. I actually replaced the left license plate bulb with a led one as well to try and make the color match.
I've seen another varient of this camera on ebay, that has led light on each side of the camera. That may work better for your vehicle.
thekash 08-01-2009, 09:13 AM Hey,
Are you planning on keeping the monitor where you have it now or move it somewhere else? i drive a stick too, so i don't want it in the way either. i'm trying to figure out where else i could place it. I have a Visor monitor was thinking of putting on there that way i can just put the visor down and use the backup camera when i need to and when i don't it'd just go back up...
Also, do the distance lines come preset with the camera? or did you have to do something to get that set properly, i'd love to know how it holds up in rain bad weather if anyone else has one as i'm from the north east and precipitation is ALWAYS an issue with exterior mods...
Signal9 08-01-2009, 09:50 AM I have an automatic. So the display will stay their until I decide if I want to replace the factory radio with one of those navi/gps/video head units.
The parking lines are set. You need to determine the distance yourself the first time by either looking at some sort of reference on the ground and measuring from that or placing objects within the the guard line.
I do find it kinda strange to looking down at the console while reversing the car, I still by nature look out the back.
The visor mounted LCD location would be great, but I never like the funky look of some of the ones being sold. <project with factory visor idea> ?
thekash 08-01-2009, 12:40 PM i was actually looking at just getting a 4' monitor and custom fitting it into the visor... its already got the power supply for the visor mirror/light so no wiring required and don't have to worry about running wires behind the curtain air bags. i mean i think i've used that mirror and light once since i've owned the car! lol
but good mod! will def. be doing this once i get my HID's and fogs in...
