View Full Version : Hardwire an Iphone / Ipod car charger

Hi all this is my first post on this website so here goes!

I'm currently using a Panavise custom mount and a Pro-Clip holder with a pass-through connect that holds and charges my Iphone/Ipod while driving. However, I'd like to eliminate having a clunky cigarette lighter car charger cord running up across my radio to plugging in to my phone cradle dock.

Can anyone tell me how to hardwire a phone charger so I can visibly hide the cord? Tie in to the fuse box or a power wire? Do I have to spice the car charger?

Any info is greatly appreciated! Thanks

You might as well just buy the adapter that allows you to use the steering controls to change the song. I'm not sure what it's called, but I know it's out there. Sorry, I haven't done much research into this.

I believe you are referring to an Ipod audio car interface kit. Something like the ones USA Spec or Blitzsafe make. You are correct in that some of these do charge the Iphone but are mainly for Ipods.

The main reason I do not go this route is because of the cost of Ipod Integration Kits and because I very seldom use my Iphone as an Ipod. I mainly just use mp3 Cd's and listen to XM Radio. Also, I use my Iphone a lot for GPS and talking while in the car which burns the battery fairly quick.

Thanks for the suggestion as it does seem to work I will not be going that route ;-)

Oh okay. What you could do is find a way to use the power that goes to the cigarette lighter, tap into those wires, and have the charger come up from somewhere in the middle of the dash, but it would require a load of work. I'm not sure if there's any easier way...

Isn't there a hidden 12v plug in the '09 Accords, like in the center console? If so, plug it in there and then get creative and route the cable underneath the console and dash panels so it appears to be hardwired.

you can get a female cig lighter socket which will have 2 wires coming off the back of it.. plug the iphone charging cig socket into it and then run 12v and gnd to whatever switched source you want. I'd use the cig lighter in the center console personally to tap power.

usa spec pa11 works with iphone, however you end up with a white screen on the iphone (only when ipod app is open) that says accessory connected. So you lose the ability to control the ipod from its screen. Wheel controls do work. As does the phone ring through the car speakers.

Curiousity question for Ipaudio2-does the USA Spec PA11 charge the Iphone while docked even if you are not using it? Also, you wouldn't happen to know if it's compatible with the Parrot CK3100 would you?

kwhitelaw-Thanks for the post man I'm really liking that idea.

I learned something new by reading this thread! Webstar187, you will love this one! I tested Ipaudio2's theory with my Dice Silverline and iPhone. If I didn't have my iPod with me I would plug in my iPhone to the Dice Silverline for music. I always assumed the phone was disabled because the screen goes to an iPod Accessory screen and you have no control of the iPod. However, you still have control of the phone, as long as you leave Airplane Mode off. When you plug in the iPhone, the iPhone will prompt you to turn on Airplane Mode since you plugged in an accessory. This is to eliminate cellular interference. I didn't drive around to see if the phone searching to maintain a signal would produce any interference. However, what I did learn was that the iPhone will receive incoming calls and you can make outgoing calls while playing music through the iPod Connection kit. When the phone rings, the music fades and pauses. You can answer the phone; however, the phone conversation is NOT heard through the stereo. I was able to change the audio source to my BlueAnt Supertooth 3 Speakerphone on my visor. To make a call, I pressed the home button and that took me out of the iPod to the main screen. I was able to place a call and the music stopped and paused. When the call ended, the music resumed automatically. And yes, it charges the iPhone.

What I didn't like was that the iPod Connection Kit changed the iPhone's audio source to the iPhone instead of my Supertooth 3. When not connected to the Dice, the iPhone defaults to the Supertooth 3 when it connects automatically to the Supertooth 3. So it may be a little inconvenient to change the audio source on that first phone call to your bluetooth device, but it should remain that way once you change it while connected to the iPod Connection Kit. Also, if the iPhone is locked when you plug it in to an iPod Connection kit, it won't work. You need to unlock the phone first, then plug it in. Then the connection kit can establish a connection with the iPod application.

Great job man but lets back up for a second... My main goal is to simply charge my phone as I use it predominatly for handsfree calls and gps navigation. So here is my question: This white screen and airplane mode and all this other stuff is this constant at all times when you plug the phone in or is it ONLY when you go to your ipod app? So am I going to see a white screen on my Iphone at all times while its plugged in even if I'm not using the Ipod app on the Iphone and also will the Iphone still ring through the car speakers if its not in Ipod app mode???

If 'm going to have to go through the hassel of seeing a white screen at all times and hearing my phone ring through my speakers when Im simply just trying to charge my Iphone then maybe I'd be best served with just a hidden car charger as kwhitelaw and hillstones kinda pointed out...

then I'd just get a 5v charging adapter and run it behind the dash. drop it into the female cig socket that i spoke of and wire that to the cig lighter wiring.

although I'd get it in black. shouldnt take more than 20 minutes to wire it all up. Assuming your panavise bracket bolts in with removal of the radio, you might be able to snake the iphone cable in at the same spot so you just see the plug.

kwhitelaw - I think I just solved my dilemma. Check out this ProClip holder that already has built in charger. Now all I need is the female cig lighter piece and presto!

This link is where I got my inspiration from. You can see that this dude uses a similar set up but doesn't use the holder with built in charger or the pass through one. Looks like he ran his own charger.

The white iPod Accessory screen only appears if you tap on the iPod app to access the iPod feature of the iPhone. If you press the Home button, it returns to the Home screen and you can do other things with the iPhone. The music still played in the background even when using the Phone app to dial a phone number. However, you will NOT hear the phone ring through the speakers if you are listening to the radio or CD. It will only happen if you are listening to the music from the iPhone. The music will pause and the phone will ring through the speakers.

It sounds like you will be better off just wiring up a power source directly instead of using an iPod connection kit.
