Bought my 09 a few months ago and it still smells nice. I'm avoiding using an air freshener until the new car smell goes away.

You do realize that "new car smell" is actually a combination of nasty chemicals drying out and out-gassing from the plastic and vinyl etc. within the car.........

I love the smell of those toxic fumes too. Mine lasted for less than a month. I think there is an tree air freshener that gives you the same smell, without being damaging to your health.

I think you might be sensationalizing the danger of plastic fumes a bit..

I enjoy the new car smell from the leather... not the plastics, personally. My Acura lasted at least 6 months before it went away.

I'm not really sure if my car still has it or not. My car smells like, well, my car. It's always smelled that way, except for when the AC was stankin' it up.

13,100 miles and 11 months later and it still smells new. It helps its been sitting for the last month and a half while I've been enjoying the motorcycle.

And for the record, there's been no rancid farts or fast food in my car...:D

Make sure you clean your windows in the interior regularly, especially if you roll your windows down. The dirt the accumilates on them will create a smell. Also the windex smells quite nice. My car smells great and we're at 13,000miles, I had air freshners at one point but they're gross.

To me the smell lasted about 11 months in my car. However, I've had my coupe for a little over a year now and whenever someone new sits in the car they ask me if the car is new because it still has the "new car smell."

don't eat in the car if you want the smell to last.......I don't care about it, but that's what they tell you in the car business....many dealer's staff are verboten from eating in the dealership demos for that reason....and obviously no smoking ever....

also clean mats once a week...light spray with fabreze

To "save" the new car smell, (even though I know you can't) Whenever I go pickup food at a restaurant takeout, I put it in the trunk in my plastic trunk tray... I am just afraid the interior will get funkafied with food smell....Also I try not to fart so much...

I haven't noticed the new car smell in a LONG time in my car (at 24k), but whenever someone new gets in they immediately comment on how it smells new.

I have leather interior and always keep it clean. However, I do eat in it infrequently...and farting is a near constant.

Same story with the RSX Type-S I had. When I traded it in with 35k miles on it other people were still commenting on how they could still smell the leather.

The "new car smell" is a product of plastic out gassing - not good, no bueno!

According to research, the car dashboard, upholstery, air freshener emit Benzene, a cancer-causing toxin (carcinogen - take time to observe the smell of heated plastic in your car). In addition to causing cancer, Benzene poisons your bones, causes anemia and reduces white blood cells. Prolonged exposure may cause Leukemia, Increasing the risk of cancer.. May also cause miscarriage.

Acceptable Benzene level indoors is 50 mg per sq. Ft.. A car parked indoors with windows closed will contain 400-800 mg of Benzene. If parked outdoors under the sun at a temperature above 60 degrees F (10 degrees C), the Benzene level goes up to 2000-4000 mg, 40 times the acceptable level.
People who get into the car, keeping windows closed will inevitably inhale, in qui ck succession, excessive amounts of the toxin. Benzene is a toxin that affects your kidneys and liver. What's worse, it is extremely difficult for your body to expel this toxic stuff.

So friends, please open the windows and door of your car - give time for interior to air out - dispel the deadly stuff .

When it's that hot out I use the key to roll the windows down before I get near it. Then I still wait a few minutes so "out goes the bad air..."

Mine has leather also and it took over a year for the "new" to go but I clean the leather about once a year and never can recapture the original.

Pizza is the worst food to carry. Takes 2 days for that smell to clear out.:)

I bought the car in March '08 and in June '09 we were on our honeymoon for 10 days. I left the car in the garage during that time and when I came back it smelled like I was taking it off the show room floor again. It seemed like not having any outside scents in the car for almost two weeks allowed the smell to accumulate again.

The new car smell is dangerous is what i heard but mine lasted for about a month and a half. I started using a freshner after about a month but now i get a mix of both the new car smell as well as the freshner. maybe a unique smell in itself i guess...
