-- Honda Motor Co. said Friday it widened a previously announced recall to add 440,000 cars that could have a lethal airbag defect.

Affected models include the 2001-2002 Honda Accord, 2001 Civic and 2002-2003 Acura TL.

The potential defect has caused 6 known injuries and one known death, according to Honda spokesman Chris Naughton.

The recall will require the driver's side steering-wheel-mounted airbag inflator to be replaced.

In some cars, the airbag inflators may over-pressurize the inflator mechanism as the airbag is deploying, which could cause the inflator casing to rupture, according to Honda. As a result the carmaker said, "Metal fragments could pass through the cloth airbag cushion material, possibly causing an injury or fatality to vehicle occupants."

Registered owners of the vehicles in question will receive a recall notice in the mail in the next few months to schedule a repair. Honda said the owners of cars most likely to have a problem will be contacted first.

In the meantime, Honda owners can log onto the Web site www.owners.honda.com/recalls and click on the "Owner Link" to get a status of their recall. Acura owners should go to www.owners.honda.com/recalls and click on the "My Acura" link.

Thanks for the heads up. We have two 02 Accords in the household so we'll be keeping an eye out for recall notices.

Unless you are the original owner don't wait for a recall notice.

Maybe they will fix the stripped screw TSB problem too. I have this, one of the screws fell out of the air bag/horn assembly...
I think if you registered at owner-link, they should, I'll let you know, as I have and have a 2001.
Any way - THANKS!

RTexasF:

Many kudos to you, Kind Sir, for the heads up on a potential recall action I am unaware of. :notworthy:

Being the 3rd (third) owner of my '02 Coupe, I am contacting my local dealer Monday. Just checked the AHOA website...which says no recalls apply to my car! :dunno:

You don't sit around and wait for things to happen. NO. You MAKE things happen!

If I have a defective driver's side airbag, I want the damn problem CORRECTED...RIGHT NOW! After all, it's MY A$$ that goes down the road in this car! :paranoid: :censored:

I checked owner link this morning and the recall notice shows up for the 01 Accord I used to own before I sold it to my father. I tried to copy & paste, but it didn't work. What I find odd is that the recall shows up as 11/11/08 but this is the first I've heard of it and I keep tabs on that site regularly.

A document search on safecar.gov turned up the following

I've read somethings that have said only 01 Accords have been recalled and somethings that have said that both 01 and 02 Accords have been recalled. I had my car in for an oil change today so I asked one of the service managers about it. He said that both 01 and 02 Accords have been recalled. He also said that Honda told them not to look up vin numbers to see if a car has been affected by the recall because the information in their system can be incorrect at this time. This is probably why there are inconsistencies with what people are finding using the owners link. I was told Honda will first send notices to people whose cars who most likely have defective airbags first and then will send out notices to everyone else with 01 and 02 Accords. I was also told to wait until I receive the notice to have the repair made.
