i cut a small hole under the side view mirror and put it small LED in there. now whenever i lock or unlock the car i have a led light that shines down from the sides of the car.

take a look:

http://media7.dropshots.com/photos/393268/20090806/001156.jpg

and here is a video showing how the lights fade in and fade out. the video starts off with the car locked. then i click the unlock and the lights fade in and when i lock the car the lights fade out. unfortunately i couldnt really get a good exposure setting for you to really see the lights turn on and off. also, it looks like its blue light but its actually this crisp, white light.

VIDEO (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWoDNZv_Qa8)

i think its a cool little mod.

thanks for the kind words!

as for the DIY ohh man... id love to! but to be honest... its a pretty complicated procedure. there is a lot of custom fabricating and some pretty invasive dremeling and lots of wiring!!!

Yeah, that's the rough part. I'm hoping to do some door lights with an LED strip under the door panel, but I don't know how to splice or tap into any other power source in the car to get it to go on and off when I'd like.

awesome dude, you should put a line of LEDs on side of the car facing down so your underbody will glow also when you unlock the car. VIP style :)

if you have a coupe then thatll be a little tougher. if you have a sedan, then its pretty easy! i have a strip of LEDs on the bottom of the door frame so that when i open the door it lights up the entire floor area as im stepping out of the car.

hahaha i think in theory that sounds good but im afraid if i actually did that it would look way to fast and furious. i like having the one single light under the mirror because it doesnt draw as much attention. i was actually inspired by my friends BMW. on all of the new BMWs they have an LED right under the door handle. i thought it looked fantastic!

damm, nice work man...

thanks! im really happy with the result but it was actually a lot of planning and hard work to actually complete this little project.

My door handle LEDs are pretty cool looking if I do say so myself.

well its not fast and furious as long as its not on when you are driving. i never liked that, but when it turns on when you unlock doors thats a different story. :)

and yea i know what you mean by the BMW door handles thats sexy

seriously... i still love eurocars but the depreciation is SOO steep and the reliability is still questionable at best.

yah i know what you mean. i think the underbody lighting would be a little TOO non oem. and the entire modding theme of my car has always been very subtle, oem looking additions/modifications.

i wanted to keep things simple and clean.

i think these lights are the perfect accent to the exterior of the car. it doesnt do anything as dramatic as body kit or a bbk but i think it adds a nice little touch and also adds a bit of class.

I've got an 8Gen Coupe, so from what you're saying, it should be a tough job. How'd you do it?

i didnt wnat to put leds in the door handles because thats a much smaller area and it would be harder to get those in there. plus, id have to run wires from the BACK doors also and that sounds like a terrible pain in the ass!

i can take a few pics of the fogs but you can find them on google.

they look just like THIS (http://www.hondawheelshop.com/ebay/2008-accord-sedan-Fog-Light-Kit-274.jpg)

You never disappoint me with your mods. Those "little mods" you do makes the car so much better than those with "big mods". You keep the car classy! I actually wanted to do something similar. Instead of the light on the side mirror, I wanted to have white underglow to light the ground below the car. The lights would be in sync with the dome light of course, I don't want them to be on when I'm driving.

Can you take more photos of your cars with different angles? I saw alot of photos of your car in other threads but I want to see more because I want to black out the grill and paint the reflector housings black as well. It would help me ALOT if you do. Plus, I'm SURE other people want to see more photos of your car.

Btw, I hope you find some tail lights for that other LED mod you're planning to do

wow thats really high praise and im not sure i deserve that. but thank you for your kind words.

as for underglow be sure to get LED lights instead of the CCFL or neon tubes. i think it would look great but also very flashy at the same time.

as for the photos... i dont know man. my car is always a MESS! its really nothing too fancy and all of my mods are not really aesthetic. my car just looks like a regular sedan off the lot.

as for the led tails... UGH! that project has been on hold for a really long time! i dont really want to spend a lot of money on the tail lights but for some reason the tails are more expensive than the headlights. WEIRD right?!

anyway... if i get an extra set of tails for a reasonable price ill get that project started up again. the entire LED module is already done. i just need to rip open a set of extra tails so i can see how im going to mount them.

I'm glad you found something to work with, can't wait to see the final product of your next "little mod" lol...

Btw, are you going to seal the bottom of the side mirror? It looks like there's just a hole there. Sealing it with glass or clear plastic will give it a more complete look! Nvm, I just checked your video, it looks like there might already be something in there.

wow you guys are nuts. ive been kinda busy lately so i havnt had a chance to check DA

well i didnt really take pictures when i did the mod.

ill try to describe it i guess.

on a very basic level:

1) take off the mirrors (you can find the PDF in the how to forum on DA)

2) disassemble the mirror housings. its very intuitive. just remove a few screws and the whole thing falls apart

3) get a dremel and cut out a small hole under the housing (i cut into the unpainted portion of the housing)

4) line up an LED array/circuit board right above the hole and then hold it down either with some kind of adhesive or just regular tape. i used something like this:

5) then connect the wires to the interior door lights. you'll have to run a LOT of wire because you need to go from the side view mirror housing, through the door panel, through the door jamb, and into the interior cabin.

6) and then just fire it up and test it out.

i know this is a really elementary and basic explanation but i didnt take pics while i was doing it so its kind of hard to explain everything after the fact.

if anyone is in socal i can help you guys do this mod and you guys can write up the DIY and post it.

hope that helps...

From where did you got the LED lights?

i got the led lights off of ebay. you can also get them from pepboys. they are the same lights that people are using for the dome lights. i think there is a company that is selling them on DA called putco or something..

as for a halogen housing i dont know if it will fit. there isnt a whole lot of space in the mirror housing.

wow you guys are nuts. ive been kinda busy lately so i havnt had a chance to check DA

well i didnt really take pictures when i did the mod.

ill try to describe it i guess.

on a very basic level:

1) take off the mirrors (you can find the PDF in the how to forum on DA)

2) disassemble the mirror housings. its very intuitive. just remove a few screws and the whole thing falls apart

3) get a dremel and cut out a small hole under the housing (i cut into the unpainted portion of the housing)

4) line up an LED array/circuit board right above the hole and then hold it down either with some kind of adhesive or just regular tape. i used something like this:

http://i5.ebayimg.com/01/i/001/45/bd/a676_1_sbl.JPG

no no. not the door lights.

I am not sure why this is so confusing, but you say the door light, but "no no" not the light on the door? Which light again did you hook into?

I think by "interior door lights" he means the map/dome lights, which come on when you open the door.

It's different for my car because of the Viper system I have, but on a stock Accord, do the interior lights come on when you unlock the doors and the headlights are set to AUTO?

Does any one of you know a car that the LED comes inside it (anywhere not in mirror only ) that i can use them or know a good brand that i can buy them from the net ?
Thanks in advance

No comments for a while, no help....just did a fun mod and left us all in the dark to fret....WELL I FIGURED IT OUT. Sorry guys, no how to but it is rather easy. I have lots of pics so I'll just explain what I've done and also, I'm not done yet but it has been tested and works. Here's the scoop.

First I actually took my mirrors off and was playing around, didn't run any wires, just mounted the oznium superflux prewired led's I had sitting around from my LED DRL mod. They're perfect, bright and easy to work with (more on that in a bit). The tough part was testing another spare LED to the overhead map lights that come on when the doors open and dim. I honestly could not figure it out until I decided to reverse my way of thinking. Rather than wiring up hot to hot and bround to ground I wired the LEDs postitive to a spare male connector in the passenger side fuse box and touched the ground on a couple of the green wires leads to the overhead lights and bingo...it worked. On when the doors open, dim when the doors close works with lock and unlcok, doesn't come on when you turn on the map light....perfect. Here's some pics:

The mirror comes off really easy. All you do is give a tug to the tweater speaker cover and let it hang, then you remove 3 8mm bolts (the larger of the 6 bolts behind the speaker), disconnect the mirror wiring and pop the mirror out. You may want to make this all simpler by removing the door panel since you're gonna have to run wire anyway. Here's some info from DevinKato's stereo install, starting on page 3 just look for the pics and you'll see how to remove everything:
http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/showthread.php?t=16709&page=3

Okay, now here's some of my pics:
1 - first is the completed setup (the only one I had of the complete unit). See that bottom portion on the hinge has an easy to remove cover just use a flathead screwdriver then it looks like image 2.
2 - Okay, in this picture I already cut the hole (3/8 inch) to fit the superflux LED in picture 3. All you do is unscrew the 3 screws and the mirror comes apart in two pieces but you have to work around the wiring harness a bit. If you look in image 4 you can see the inside of the hinge where you can decide where to cut the whole to glue the LED in.
3 - Superflux LED (prewired and resistor ready to go for 12v) buy here:
http://www.oznium.com/prewired-superflux
4 - I've already siliconed the LED in place here but you can see that you have to work around the reinforcements and drill a hole through one of the walls so you can run the wires through to the wiring harness and run it through the rubber cover as in picture 5.
5 -rubber cover with the LED wiring coming through near the mirror harness (may want a little dab of silicone just to be safe).

Continued on next post.....

mattchatwin
11-17-2009, 12:49 PM
....continued.

6 - This image shows the bottom without the plastic cover. The trick is to put the cover on after you drilled the larger 3/8 inch hole so that you can drill from the other side with a smaller bit to fit the LED through and get it to line up properly.
7 - the finished cover with a little silicone to clean up but all sealed nice. As you can see in image 1 with it lit.
8 - Last image is the overhead console. The green wire on the left side is the one you want to tap the ground into. The positive is tapped into any lead that is always hot (if you look in the passenger side fuse box there are several open slots on the bottom row that you can use a female quick connect on...easy as pie). To remove the overhead console open up the sunglasses holder and remove the tw screws. remove the two plastic light lense covers using a small flathead screwdriver - gently) and then remove those two screws. I then unclipped a few of the harnesses (depends on what model you have) and it will be easier to work wtih. I stripped the black plastic sheathing on the blue Light connector harness (with the green wires) so I could work with it. I then used a wire stripper to pull the left green wire (it is green with a white marking on it) sheething back. I then ran some really thin 24gauge black wire from the doors to the overhead console and soldered it to the open sheathing I stripped back.

Okay running the wires was a piece of cake. All i did was ran the wire along the top edge of the front panel and the glass (just slid right behind there and through the opening into the console I took apart). Then I ran that wire along the windshield underneath the headlinging without any tools to the A pillars. Nothing to take apart here as well except for the rubber weather stripping which just pulls off and snaps back up in place afterward. Just figure this out it's really easy. The trick is getting it tucked under the hard plastic at the top of the A pillar but easy enough just to pry a tiny bit with a small screwdriver. Then I ran the wire down to the doors.

Here's the tough part that I have not had time to do yet (wire is hanging down to my floor right now). Door panels will need to come off (see the thread I provided above) and you will likely need to get under the glove box (remove it) and the drivers side will take some tinkering to get in there. I might have to use a stif but flexible piece of wire to run through the wiring gromet from the door to the cab at the hinges...this will be the not so fun part. After that you're done. Black ground to the overhead door operated lead wire and the red hot to a fuse that is always hot. you can use a $2 test light to check for a hot lead in the passenger side fuse panel. I am tapping into the one that is the second one closest to you as you look at it. There's 4 or 5 slots there with 2 connections, one is possitive and one is negative the postive is the one you need.

I'll post more pics up by this weekend with the finished product and maybe a video with the output.

Good luck.

Can the TPMS sensors in the Infiniti wheels be programmed? I love those wheels, but don't want to have the idiot light staring at me every day...

mattchatwin
12-27-2009, 05:15 PM
Been too cold to wire up the lights but they do work as stated just haven't had a chance to run the wire through the doors. Still gonna be a trick to do that so just waiting.

On the Oznium side, the prewired superflux were easy to install and my recomendation for the cleanest look. The strips will have to be glued to the exterior and the wires will run...somehwere....my opinion is that if you are going to do that you might as well do it right and pull everything apart. It's easy to do.

On the rim side of things they have to be Honda TPMS, cost around $40 a piece. You will want to have TPMS if you ever want to turn off the traction control. Can't turn it off if there is a TPMS sensor fault.

yes, not sure if our TPMS sensors will fit in the infiinity wheels though I tend to think they are pretty standard. You'll have to ask the OP if he has done this with his wheels.

I'm sure you could probably install them. The picture you showed installed looks like a custom project anyhow. It'd require some heavy duty cutting.

tono
02-21-2010, 04:49 PM
It is the OEM mirror for the BMW not a custom project.

zexen
02-21-2010, 04:58 PM
Huh. Looks like a custom cut job. It looks too grainy on the edges to be OEM, but if it is, then that's pretty neat. Doubt you'd have any trouble putting it in the OEM housings, since the entire bottom is one piece. Our colored cover doesn't wrap all the way to the bottom.

The problem is with the mirror if it can still be adjustable down. If the LED is too sick it will hit the mirror.

zexen
02-21-2010, 05:14 PM
You should have enough room. It might not be able to be placed immediately on the first edge. You might need to push it further back a little. No one's really going to be able to tell you this since its actual size would be necessary to try and figure it out.

tono
02-21-2010, 05:17 PM
I said the actual sickness of them is 0.5 cm from a side and 1.5cm from the other.
The length is 7.5 cm

zexen
02-21-2010, 05:22 PM
Just a heads up, members don't have sideview mirrors removed to just handily check this out for you. My suggestion, tilt your mirror all the way down and see how much room is there. If it's 1.5cm thick, then you won't be able to fit it. From the looks of it, sounds like 1.5cm wide... Keep in mind, 2.6cm is 1inch, so you're saying the item is over .5in thick... That's a pretty darned thick module.
