View Full Version : Harmon Kardon Drive+Play
pjdaxdj 09-12-2005, 09:27 PM What do you guys think about this?
Finding something to play my ipod with. It sure is pricey (@ $199), but sure is better than my Monster FM mod.

Steven 09-12-2005, 09:45 PM I like it but can all those wires and pieces be hidden? Otherwise a good looking add-on to connect an i-pod to a car.
Mv774 10-23-2005, 07:58 AM ive got the snhond3 or whatever and its good for what it is but i wanted more intergration. when i saw the drive+play i feel in love, i am def. getting one of those as a christmas present to myself :naughty: . ( but i dont know if i can wait that long  )
marainwa 11-02-2005, 08:53 AM im not sure, but the drive+play uses RCA plugs to input through the stereo....so is the only way to adapt this to the stock honda radio to buy the $100 14pin to rca adapter? If so that kinda sucks....
Mv774 11-02-2005, 09:40 AM ive already got one of those and it was 107 dollars
Mv774 11-02-2005, 09:41 PM does anybody have one yet? if so post a pic of the set up and all those good things thanks ALOT. im having trouble where to mount the click wheel thing. i really want to have it all planed out before i deside to spent that money on it thanks alot
marainwa 11-17-2005, 02:40 PM just ordered mine last night...hopefully will be here by Monday...ill let ya know what I think after I get some use out of it...cant wait :D
Mv774 11-18-2005, 08:08 AM where are you going to place that click wheel thing? i dont think i cant wait any longer to get it im sooo pumped about it
marainwa 11-18-2005, 12:52 PM im not really sure yet...im gonna have to wait till it gets here Monday and figure that out...cant wait to get it!
marainwa 11-21-2005, 11:47 AM It just came in and i hooked it up real quick to the car...sounds great....from my first look im guessing ill prob. use the adhesive and stick it on top of the panel to the "not an ashtray" compartment. i pretty much only use that for change, and once the scrollwheel is on that lid, then as long as the large compartment in the front is open then this lid should have no troubld raising...not sure if this is the way im gonna go but just from taking a look thats what im thinking. Not sure when im gonna have time to properly install it though.
Mv774 11-21-2005, 11:57 AM how did you run it threw your stereo you have the shonda3 or whatever or did you just do the FM modulation? and are you gonna hard wire it? i wonder which wire you should cut into maybe the radio's power wire? it would have to be somthing that came on with the car oh well dude i cant wait to hear how you did it
marainwa 11-22-2005, 02:49 PM hey it seems your about the only one here who also ordered one...so maybe you've thought of this. first of all im am hardwiring the power as well as using a soundgate...i plugged it in and it sounds awsome..the control is cool too...anyway, have you thought of where to put the lcd screen...im either going to put it
1) center of dash
2) over on the left dash of the driver's side
3) in the flip console under the radio
i just cant decide if i want it on the dash, or on the console..i know its designed for safetly to be put on the dash, but would look so much better in the console....any thoughts? as far as the wiring i should get around to doing that tonigth hopefully..if so ill take pics. for you...shouldnt be too difficult.
Mv774 11-22-2005, 04:06 PM im going to put it just left or right of the hump (where the speedo and stuff are) on the dash board. and im thinking about taking the control knob threw the little "cubby hole" and not screw it down or anything so if somebody in the back wanted to they could grab the knob from the back and control or the pass. side could do it to
and as for us two being the only people that have ordered it..... well as soon as i saw it i wanted it. maybe others are just wait to hear more about it, or just wait untill it goes more "main stream"
marainwa 11-23-2005, 08:14 AM well what i actually did as far as hardwiring...I took it to circuit city and they did it for me $25...they connected it directly to the 12v and acc wire from the ignition harness....watching them do that made me glad i didnt try it myself....it only took them about 45 mins too...now for the problem...dont worry...drive and play is great...but i disconected my battery, and now the radio is wanting the code....i keep putting in the code i was given wheni bought the car but it doesnt work...so I have everything installed, but cant listen to anything until i go to the dealer and get the radio code thing worked out... :headbash:
Uncle Skid 11-23-2005, 08:46 AM I just came across this today -- I don't have the Harman/Kardon unit (I have an ice-Link), but it might be useful to you guys: Harman Kardon Drive + Play Installation (http://www.themikez.com/mikes_accord/drive_play.htm).
The pictures take awhile to load, but there's a whole lot of detail there. I really like how he mounted the display and control units.
marainwa 11-23-2005, 09:10 AM wow wish i had seen that a couple days ago haha...i have my control nob exactly how he does...my display though is inside the flip console underneath the radio....still cant decide if i want to leave it there or move to the dash on the left side like that install shows....its a much cleaner look inside the console...but easier to see while driving on the dash....not sure if i wanna change it or not....hmmmmm
Mv774 11-23-2005, 09:48 AM im still trying to decide if i like how he has it all powered up. i think i might do it that way, just modified a little bit.
marainwa 11-23-2005, 10:02 AM yeah i like the way he did it...id prob. do something like he did if i were you..you have no idea the pain it is to wire it urself....hopefully i can get this radio code things straightened out and im good to go....still debating whether or not to move the display to the dash or not..
Mv774 11-23-2005, 12:12 PM oh im most deff. gonna put it on the dash like he did and mout the control knob where you guy put it,and now thinking about it im probably gonna do it just like he did except he put that rubber mat over everything and i bet thats a little flimsy so im gonna go buy some ABS plastic and try to make a little box to cover it all or sort of give the bottom a false floor sort of thing.
marainwa 11-25-2005, 09:24 AM Well i finally god the radio code...turns out the serial number on the little sticker was wrong, so I had to pull my radio out and get the serial number...all is well now and the drive+play sounds great....hardwired to the powersource behind the steering column and used a soundgate to wire it to the cd changer input...heres a few pics of the finished product...

marainwa 11-28-2005, 08:27 PM so mv774, you get it in? Hows it workin for u?
Accord4Life 11-28-2005, 08:29 PM The pics won't work for me. Darn!
Mv774 11-28-2005, 09:31 PM well i got it around 2 and headed to work.... i decided to hard wire where the control box is in the little arm rest thing... then i saw that right above the head unit is a little space that would be just perfect. so i took my time and zip tied everything off and it looked like a factory instal.... after i took my time got everything just the way i wanted and button everything back and it was about 6..... i even sodered (if thats how you spell it). later this night i was driving around and i guess i didnt ground right and you could hear the enging threw the speakers... it happened to a friend of mine that i did a comp. speaker intall for. soooo.... i was just happy at all........ about 10 tonight i went back at it and took everything out and re-did everything just like that one guy that just pluged his into a cig. lighter.... now it sounds amazing...everything if perfect. its about 1130 now and ive got a hour drive to a 9 oclock class tomorrow so ill post pictures later.
Mv774 11-29-2005, 12:10 PM well i think i need a ground loop isolator.... im hearing a buzzing sound from the speakers..... isnt that what i need?
marainwa 11-29-2005, 02:22 PM yup thats what you need...i think you can get them at http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062214&cp=&kw=ground+loop+isolator&parentPage=search
that should fix it right up
mine hasnt given me any hum yet...what did you ground it to?
marainwa 11-29-2005, 02:24 PM have any pics of ur install?
Mv774 11-29-2005, 05:32 PM i plugged into the cig. lighter in the arm rest. and the pictures are coming later tonight
marainwa 11-30-2005, 12:52 PM what kind of hum did you hear? I just installed my soundgate last night, but I dont think i hear any hum...is it very noticable?
Mv774 11-30-2005, 01:45 PM no not the snhonda3 this is what i did i pluged my soundgate or whatever up to the HU then i hooked up a ground loop isolater to that and then my HK drive and play and it sounds amazing now.... now before i installed the ground loop isolator there was a buzzing that would rise and fall is sound with the RPM's which if im not mistaken its some sort of electrical noise
kidsmoke 12-02-2005, 01:29 AM I've had my eye on it as well and will get it just as soon as I figure this all out. I have an 02 Accord with the in dash CD Changer. I think I need to add some kind of aux input. Either something from soundgate or P.I.E. X-3 Multi-source Auxiliary input converter. Not sure if the soundgate adapter will work or not. Not thrilled about the pie converter either, its got a source selector on it. Really enjoying everything about the Accord, just wishing I could figure this out. Installing it in my old Subaru was simple.

for your 02 that is a killer step up and the RCA CD changer is hella cheep i bought mine for 107 so your saving some good money
get all that stuff and you will have the most killer total ipod car radio interface on the planet
kidsmoke 12-04-2005, 02:01 PM That will work, but I'm looking for something that would allow me keep the use of the factory cd changer as well.
Mv774 12-04-2005, 06:51 PM oh, well isnt your in the dash? if its a indash then i shouldnt be affected..... if .........well then... um... FM transmission i guess :D i dont know i havent seen the back of an 02 Head unit so dont take my word for Crap i guess
marainwa 12-05-2005, 08:46 AM Quick question for you....when you have the drive and play on and the ipod paused, or volume turned way down, do you have any background noise? Im using the ground isolator and and still getting a faint digital swoosh sound (best i can describe it). Have you had any of this, or is it perfectly silent when the unit is paused or volume down?
kidsmoke 12-05-2005, 08:41 PM oh, well isnt your in the dash? if its a indash then i shouldnt be affected..... if .........well then... um... FM transmission i guess :D i dont know i havent seen the back of an 02 Head unit so dont take my word for Crap i guess
Yep mine is in the dash, that input from crutchfield basically takes over the cd option, rendering in dash changer useless. There is an aux input device that works like a switcher, might have to go that route. Has it's own switch to jump between in dash Changer and another aux input.
Mv774 12-05-2005, 09:03 PM yep that sounds like your best bet..... BTW sorry about not putting up those pics yet its exam finals week here so im studying my  off
Mv774 12-16-2005, 11:06 PM well im sorry it took along time but i finally caught myself up with work and everything so the "clean before" is the picture of how nice i had all my wiring when i had everything hard wired.... but i decided to just plug the unit into the cig. lighter so ya take a look the install wasnt that bad at all im actully thinging about taking it all apart and doing some crazy cool not to sure yet tho.....
yaqui 01-18-2006, 08:28 AM I'm about to install the D+P in my '05 Accord, and am trying to figure out where to mount the display and control knob. I'm pretty sure the display is going to go in the cubby, below the head-unit/ac, but the know is a different story. I see where you mounted yours on the change holder, but I'm wondering how you are keeping that from opening? It's one of those push to open things, and it seems like it would open every time you try and use the knob. Am I missing something? Did you disable the mechanism?
Mv774 01-18-2006, 09:10 AM your talking about the control knob on the change hold right next to the 12volt plug? well my change holder doesnt have a one touch open thing at all. also i think that mounting you display in ther cubby would sort of defeat the the whole reason for its being. (but thats just IMO) i love both where i mounted everything. the control knob looks like it should have came factory that way, and so does the display, once i cleaned everything up.
Mv774 01-18-2006, 09:13 AM Quick question for you....when you have the drive and play on and the ipod paused, or volume turned way down, do you have any background noise? Im using the ground isolator and and still getting a faint digital swoosh sound (best i can describe it). Have you had any of this, or is it perfectly silent when the unit is paused or volume down?
ya i have it to. the only thing i can thing of is the ground loop isolator isnt working real strongly. i even have a really good bare metal ground and i still have it. i dont know what to say. maybe somebody should call HK about it.
yaqui 01-18-2006, 10:26 AM your talking about the control knob on the change hold right next to the 12volt plug? well my change holder doesnt have a one touch open thing at all. also i think that mounting you display in ther cubby would sort of defeat the the whole reason for its being. I agree on the display location, but I was worried about exposure to extreme heat, and security. I'd hat to have to replace the display, if it gets fried.
On the control knob, I'm still confused. The little change holder opens by pushing down on the door, it clicks open, correct? That's what my '05 does. Is the '03 different? When you use the knob, does the pressure not open that door?
Mv774 01-18-2006, 12:08 PM i guess the 05s and the 03 are different cause you just lift up on mine. if you read your product manual you will see where it say to install the display, it says you can put it up there. so why would they tell you to put it there if it wasnt ready to take the heat. as far as security well i guess thats all up to you... not much i can say to convince you other wise
yaqui 01-18-2006, 01:44 PM No probelm at all. I appreciate the help!
marainwa 01-19-2006, 02:48 PM i decided to put the knob the same place on my '03 accord, but like he said its not the one touch open. The display i have mounted in the cubby below and it looks reallyl clean imo...ill try to put some pics up if you want. good luck with the install!
yaqui 01-20-2006, 10:01 AM Got my D+P installed yesterday. I'm really happy with the unit, but the install experience sucked! I took it to Circuit City, and am still having issues. They broke the plastic that the center unit clips into. And now the cover of that cubby doesn't close 100% of the time. They claim it's the mechanism on the door, but I think it's all connected. I'm going to get them to order the parts, and get it all replaced.
Here are some pics:

marainwa 01-20-2006, 02:22 PM looks good! as far as the cubby not closing...you might want to ask if they installed the unit behind it...because if they did the cubby could be rubbing up against it and not closing..i had the same problem so just took the cubby out and adjusted some things to make it fit better....question for you, when you turn on the unit and play songs, do you have any background noise at all when the music is a little softer and the volume is turned up, or is it totally silent for you? I have run into this a few times...just curious. good luck with circuit city, hopefullly they replace anything if they damaged it.
yaqui 01-23-2006, 07:46 AM I hadn't heard anything too bad. I can hear the Ipod drive spin, prior to the song starting. I haven't used it too much yet, so maybe there's something I missed. I'll keep an ear out.
I'm just happy to be able to listen to my Ipod in the car again!!

Just started noticing some background noise. When the music is off, and I'm searching through menus I hear static and an electric whine. The whine actually mimics the engine (louder when I accelerate, softer when I slow down). Is this an install issue?
marainwa 01-25-2006, 12:19 PM yup....thats exactly the whine i was talking about...i get the same thing with mine. I hooked up the soundgate directly to the ipod and the sounds isnt there...its only when you go through the drive and play. I got a groundloop isolator and this helped some, but I still hear the noise...its not a big deal when the sound is up, but still is annoying. I called the company and they said this shouldn't happen but thats as far as ive gotten so far....any ideas?
Accord4Life 01-25-2006, 12:23 PM I thought that the Accord Stereo in the 7th gen had speed sensitive volume control???
If so, thats why it gets louder.
yaqui 02-02-2006, 12:10 PM Another thing I noticed is that you can't play all albums. For example, in an Ipod, you choose an artist, and it has all the albums listed and has an "All" option. The D+P doesn't have that. Not a major thing, but I'm not sure why this isn't there.
AT03V6 01-27-2007, 12:43 PM Hey,
I've had this for a while but finally got everything squared away (though I do have the buzzing as well, I just turn down the treble). I saw the pictures that were posted earlier and thought I'd share the way that I have mine set up.
I have the control fob stuck on with double-sided exterior house tape, used for hanging up address numbers i suppose. The screen uses the supplied double sided tape and the wire runs through a hole i drilled at the bottom of the closest panel on the side of dash (only visible with door open, still closes). The brain is stuck in the glove box with two vecro strips. I drilled through the back of the cubby hole to let the iPod wire through. Very suttle, some people don't even notice I have the screen or fob unitl music magically starts changing.
Oh, nevermind, I can't post pictures, could someone explain how?
