I changed out the original oil at 3k miles last night, and switched to 10w-30 mobil1 synthetic (I might have left the break-in oil in there longer, but I think honda didn't intend for aggressive driving on that oil after the first 500 easy-going miles).

It's amazing what a difference an oil change can make! When I switched my other car to synthetic, I noticed a mileage gain.. .I'll report back whether I see it or not at the next fillup.

Yes, but you don't need to stress about it. M1 tends to run thin for the grade anyway.

CA05LX, how far north do you live? If you're more than 4 hours north of the US border, you should consider going to a thinner oil instead, such as 0w-20. You'll notice livelier performance and decreased gas mileage for the first tank of gas after the oil change... you're too busy having fun while driving the car with "extra" hp than worrying about the gas mileage.. After the first tank, your gas mileage will go up and your engine's power will stay at its lively levels. ;) I changed my car with regular Mobil Clean 5000 dino oil on its first oil change and I still noticed a difference in engine response and seat of the pants power. I can't wait until I go full synthetic at 20k miles.

Read a ton about it before deciding, and there was nothing compelling to make me hunt for 5w-20.

I will make a suggestion......next round go to Mobil1 5W30 EP. It will be about a buck more per quart but 10K-12K oil change intervals will be a cinch without worry. This assuming that, for some reason, you have ruled out 5W20.

10W30 is a bit on the high side of the cold starting range, especially as temperatures begin to drop with fall approaching. Where do you live?

BTW don't run this first batch of M1 past 5000 miles. Change oil & filter at that point to whatever you decide on.......hopefully more M1!

I live in the bay area, CA, where it almost never hits freezing, and average winter temps are in the 50s-60s. The car is garaged anyway, so even if it were to be one of those rare 30s nights, the car would be in the cozy 50-60 degree range. Even when I run day trips to tahoe, my cars rarely see below 40 degrees since I'm only parked from 10am to 4pm :thmsup:

I really wonder what weight the factory fill is, because it seemed really thick coming out.

Two thoughts about Mobil 1. Have you ever noticed that when you shop for it that you can never find your weight in stock. On a recent Wally World visit they had mostly 10W-30 or 10W-40 in stock and one bottle of 5W-30. No 5W-20 in stock nor a shelf tag for it. Places like Advance Auto and O'Reilly Automotive gave similar results. Honda needs to get on folks about 5W-20 availabilty since they recommend it..

The only 5W-20's dino or synth in stock at these places were QS,PENNZ,Castrol,Trop Artic,Motorcraft, and Valvoline.

I have wanted to switch vehicles to it in the past, but resisted doing so because I just hate OUT OF STOCK or N/A.

Mobil instructs no more than 5000 miles on the first batch of M1 synthetic. It is the standard practice with all, not just M1. After that 7-8K is cool. The 5W30 EP would easily allow the 10K intervals and still be within warranty specs.

It's not exactly just M1 that has a limited supply of 5w-20 oil. It's the same with all brands and all oils of that grade. It's not used as widely as 5w-30 so not as much is stocked on the shelves. Now there are many more new cars that reccommend 5w-20, but the stores still stock the same amount as before, so they become unavailable quickly. You just got to wait until the stores realize that there are many more engines out that that need 5w-20 before seeing more stock on their shelves.
